In 2009, Matt Crafton went winless in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series, despite finishing second the points standings. It's debatable though on if he should have been winless though, due to what took place at Gateway International Raceway in the 2009 Copart 200, aka Matt Crafton's Most Controversial NASCAR Race Ever...

Wow! I remember this race vividly after seeing this video. To this day, both myself and my dad maintain that Crafton did nothing wrong. I was always a fans of Hornaday and Bodine, but damn they were two aggressive drivers and every once in a while they pulled some really aggressive moves. Those kinds of blocks have cause plenty of wrecks before. Hornaday and Bodine kind of got what they had coming to them.

@berryboiblast

In my opinion, Crafton didn’t cause those wrecks on purpose, he was just being aggressive. I think he was just the right amount of aggressive, and both Ron Honraday and Todd Bodine put late blocks on him. I mean the man doesn’t have a win this season up to this point, if I were him I’d be a bit more aggressive then usual too and try everything too win. Matt Crafton should’ve been the winner, that’s my take

Bodine was a menace most days, and that was definitely his fault - just like 99% of the wrecks he was in. Gotta put the blame on Crafton for the Hornaday one though. Not sure if it justified a black flag, however.
@Ultimate23Dragon
@Ultimate23Dragon 2 года назад
As much as it was controversial for Crafton, it may have been more controversial for Ron Hornaday. Since 2007, there had been an assumption that Hornaday was NASCAR's "Golden Boy" of the Trucks Series. The Toyota horsepower reduction rule change of 2008 which benefited Chevy immensely "to make things more even" _(Which Todd Bodine referenced in his interview in this video)_ was believed to help Hornaday make history by being the first to win the title in back-to-back years. Because he didn't it wasn't considered as a fact... until 2009. Along with other shenanigans between 2007 & 2009, the fact Crafton was black flagged for Hornaday, & not Bodine, pretty much solidified Ron Hornaday as what we thought he was all along: NASCAR's "Golden Boy" of the Trucks Series.
@davidhonkstvorisit4811

(Timothy Peters, Matt Crafton, Natalie Decker, Ben Rhodes, Austin Hill, among others), are living proof that whether you fool around with them, intentionally or not, you always somehow get wrecked... but small tastes like that, despite being super annoying, more often than not, is what makes the Truck Series so much fun to watch, especially when the championship race starts heating up...

How is he at fault in the second wreck it's literally just the first wreck repeated? Why does it matter if you have an inch in there or a foot in there, you're in there? It's not like he bombed it in there from five cars back with no intention of ever making the corner. He got underneath of him sure it was only a few inches but he was there.

Nah, neither was Crafton's fault. Those were veteran drivers chop-blocking in corner entry with single-digit laps left, and getting dumped for it. Both times Crafton had his nose underneath them, and both times they drove across it. This was not lap 10 or even 100. This was the end of the race. Crafton had no obligation to lift and let them go.

NASCAR straight stole that win for Matt crafton for no legitimate reason whatsoever I saw racing deals in those wrecks. I saw clearly clearly 1 billion percent the 88 had the bottom line going into the corner and both bodine and Hornady both clearly clearly came down and spun themselves out they came down onto the nose of the 88 and spun themselves out the same as Skinner almost did off the nose of Sutter. And had the 13 not checked up like he did not have to and had the five spun off his nose it would have been the five fault as well. It is called racing racing okay if you have the bottom line and you go into the corner and you're on the bottom and you're not washing up which the 88 did not wash up the track in either of those wrecks he did not go up the track he held the bottom and the car aside of you or truck in this case a side of you decides oh I want the bottom or I'm going to block and comes down and hits your right front corner and spins out that is on them 100 trillion percent it is not on Mattie at all and NASCAR had no right whatsoever to penalize him they stole a win off of him.

The one with Hornaday wasn’t egregious enough to be penalized. Bodine clearly came down on him waiting too late to try to throw a block. He was just penalized for being in multiple incidents that looked alike even though two of them weren’t really his fault. NASCAR calls some of the most ridiculous penalties sometimes.

Personally, I find Matt Crafton's 3 championships more impressive than Ron Hornaday's 4 championships. Ron Hornaday is the Richard Petty of the truck series. Not saying he didn't have good competition, he did. But he had the 1 advantage they didn't, better teams. He drove for DEI who was connected to RCR. And then he drove for KHI, who was connected to RCR as well. For the majority of his truck series career he had the backing of a Cup series team. The guys who he raced against at that time didn't really have that. Mike skinner, Jack Sprague, Johnny Benson, Todd Bodine and countless others were just as good a driver as Ron but they couldn't really hang on to top rides for very long which ultimately hindered their success. Ron was the lucky one. Matt Crafton never had that. But yet he still beat everyone who had better rides than him. Case in point, Kyle Busch and KBM. Kyle Busch effectively did what Ron did. Kyle broke Ron's win record with his own truck team that was backed by JGR. Also Thorsport Racing are truly the only team in the truck series that can stop Kyle Busch Motorsports from running away with everything. Just look at this year alone and how the championship turned out. Take TSR out of the equation and KBM absolutely destroys the truck series in 2021. Not saying Ron sucks but in my opinion he's not any better than Matt.
