The notion that Matt doesn’t work harder to not lose a role to RDJ for instance is incredibly hypocritical. I'm from the UK & 53 now, but as a kid aged 13, I was heading off the rails, teachers disliked me and I had had a big run in with the law... The toughest/strictest teacher in the school "Mr Williamson" took to me to his office, and talked to me, like a father, and someone who could see my trajectory and cared.... That man changed my life, when no-one else gave a shit...I knuckled down and ended up at College, then University etc etc... One great teacher can mould a life, While I thanked him when I left school, he'll never know exactly what he did that day.. Thanks Sir ❤️

Watching them buy their first home, get married etc.. Its so rewarding... But I think about Mr Williamson at some point every week, he was so influential, a perfect role model and a gentleman.. He taught me how to be a man. These people are so underrated..

I dated a teacher. From that experience I can confidently say it changes DRASTICALLY depending on where you teach. The difference between where she was teaching when we met and where she ended up teaching when she moved to my area was about $30k. She was a 12 year teacher making $60k a year in California only able to have her own apartment because the people she rented her condo from basically gave her way under market rent because she was a teacher. The fact that teachers are required to spend so much money on their classroom that then can't be written off is ridiculous. And if you teach in the wrong area it's absolutely under paid you have to know that right?

30+. You and others of your generation are in a completely different category. Teachers such as yourself were interested and took personal pride and satisfaction in seeing your pupils succeed and produce. I remember my teachers. Some of them would stay back at the end of the day in order to provide extra lessons to those who needed it. They were paid to do so, as was the correct thing to do; some even held the lessons at their homes. They were real teachers. They established, from the beginning of the first day of school, exactly who was in charge of the classroom. Our teachers corrected and disciplined us without ever raising their voices or passing our and insulting us. The respect was mutual. I never heard any of the students who were disciplined retaliating by violence or even talking back. When we grumbled, it was in our heads. We showed our teachers the same respect we showed our parents. Guess what? Those teachers never heard the word 'Tenure.' They earned their jobs and kept them by demonstrating they were good at what that did. If perchance, one of them underperformed, they were fired, and a more competent one was hired. Meritocracy works in every area. It forces everyone to do their very best every time if they'd like to remain employed.

Teachers get paid less than McDonald’s workers to start and it takes a lot to get ahead. The teacher I worked with was a McDonald’s employee and only quit to become a teacher because her concept for special education was accepted. Our class had everything to teach a student how to live a normal life on their own. We were a community based instructed class and we taught cooking plus classes that would enable a student to get a job. Granted some would never be able to due to their disability. I sacrificed a lot for my students and because our class was low income, I’d pick them up and take them on some of our family fun days just so they could experience new things. I loved my kids. Because of the foundations laid by these 2 teachers, I consistently outperformed my peers in primary school in English. The third teacher I had was my year 3 and year 5 teacher. So I had to take him and pick him up daily from school. I caused him to be late on some days because I didn’t get to leave work soon enough to beat traffic and it was very frustrating. Thank you, Matt Damon!❤ I was a teacher for 30 years and loved it. I miss teaching-children come to school full of hope. It was my job to believe in them and do all I could to be there for my students and their families. There’s no amount of money to pay a dedicated teacher. However, I made not much more than a family of 4 on welfare. After 10 years, I began to make a little better. I should not have had to have 2 jobs, besides teaching, to support my family as a single mother. If we truly value our children, our future, we must value and pay teachers what is a respetable salary.

@ScenOne parents rights groups and the unions pushed for this "mainstream" all kids as much as possible. It has been an unmitigated disaster for the special needs kids as it has for the non-special needs. When the primary objective is mainstream above all else the SPED kids get put in classes that make them feel like failures, teachers struggle to keep up pace for the non SPED students. Sure but I'm assuming they're both younger, correct? We do have massive issue with teachers becoming jaded by the system and they stop putting forth the effort they once applied. I've attended two colleges, one community college, and I noticed that the young teachers all had passion, but the older teachers were only passionate at about a rate of 1 in every 10. And 80% of my teachers were older. The issue with tenure is that when a teacher becomes tenured, you lose the ability to remove the bad teachers. Its the same complaint we have with the police; not all police officers are bad, but the bad ones stay on the force in perpetuity, causing far more problems than they should. No one is arguing "All teachers are bad." The argument is, "Why are we removing the ability to remove bad teachers from their role?"

Second, it seems to me based on your statement, that the teachers aren't the problem but the system they are forced to operate within that makes them 'jaded'. "Why are we removing the ability to remove bad teachers from their role?" - ??? This was never mentioned in the video and where is the ability to remove teachers being removed? You can remove bad teachers unless they have tenure, which I don't think applies to K-12 education, but could be different depending on the state. Even tenured professors can be removed.

@@aliwalker7667 The journalist's question was legitimate, and he answered in a biased manner. He was 100% correct when speaking about some teachers, but teachers are not a monolithic group anymore than any group is. You have good teachers and bad teachers. That was my experience in K-12, an college. It's literally the reason Rate My Professor existed. For instance, I had some professors that were super passionate about teaching their subject. I had a couple that came to class completely unprepared. One literally left her things in her car, and instead of taking a little time to go get them, she chose to wing the class, and it was horrible. So yes, having teachers meet a standard to retain employment is legitimate. Tenure is not actually a good thing. As a parent, I'm tired of people claiming it's always the parent's fault. Not even close to true in most cases, and I pointed that out to my step-daughter's principal. As I told her, she knew first hand that I did not side with my daughter against the teachers when it came to her behavior. However, the teachers weren't even using the tools they had available to them to keep me and my wife informed as to what her assignments were, and when they were due. You think being a teacher is hard? Try being a parent, when your child has something in writing that tells how a project is to be done, and then your child tells you on Friday evening that the teacher changed something about the project. As the parent you want your child to succeed, so you now have a choice, listen to the child, or go by the instructions. You check the school website and the section devoted to that class, and the calendar for the assignments, test/quiz schedule, etc. has NOTHING on it. So you tell the child to do it according to the written instructions, which then causes the child to fail. Now you as the parent are the A-hole. Why? Because the teacher didn't keep the parents in the loop using the tools available to them. I was back in college again, pursuing a different degree, and these kinds of tools were being utilized by the professors. I was never under any misunderstanding as to what the schedule was, what was due when, and what the requirements were. It even broke down what was required to achieve an A, B, C, etc. So I reject the idea that it's always the parent's fault. No it is not. In some cases, yes. In most cases, no.
