It is a long running joke. He does not wait back stage. If they have an opportunity for a particularly good gag, like this one was just shown, he takes part as he and Jimmy are good friends.

hes often actually there, most people think its just a gag, but he often does show up and comes out at the end of the filming. basically when they are intending to go out somewhere afterwards, matt shows up and hangs out.
