There's also the tragic death of Phil Hartman (who played the father in this skit) who was murdered by his wife in 1998. He had a long career with SNL and was in the sitcom Newsradio, plus many comedies. He did the voice of Troy Mclure on the Simpsons as well. RIP Chris and Phil.
That era SNL crew was legendary‼️ Chris Farley, David Spade, Adam Sandler, Mike Myers, Dana Carvey, Chris Rock, Rob Schneider, Kevin Nealon, Julia Sweeney, Tim Meadows, Phil Hartman, Ellen Cleghorn, Jon Lovitz, etc… Amazing Cast around that time!
Yes David Spade and Chris Farley were incredibly close. It was heartbreaking to see his reaction when he passed away. Van by the river has always been one of my favorites...well actually a lot of Chris and Spade on SNL are my favorites
@@goldilox369 if you’re talking about David Spade… I know, it’s tough losing a good friend. Wonder why they parted ways 🤨🤔 because he wasn’t in Beverly Hills Ninja or Almost Heroes
1 in a million talent? I don’t think so, I think anybody can do what he could if they were his size. Farley had his moments when he was funny, that was it. He was tragic more than anything else. I felt so sorry for him
Those days of SNL were amazing. Farley, Spade, Chris Rock, Adam Sandler, Rob Schneider and Conan O’Brien was one of the head writers then. All of them were really close friends as well. Spade and Farley were best friends in real life. Bob Odenkirk, Saul Goodman himself from Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul wrote this sketch. He also was a dear friend of Farley’s as well. Farley was truly beloved by his peers.
Phil Hartman is usually good for the straight man but you can see he was already smiling from the beginning. One of those times everyone was losing it. Except Farley.
Spade and Farley were a throwback to the past. They were the closest thing to a real comedy duo like Abbot and Costello and Laurel and Hardy, that my generation has ever seen.
This never fails to crack me up. It's the physicality for me. If I was in that scene, I would've lost it all over the place when my guy fell on the table like that! I also have a shirt of him that says "Well La-di-Frickin' Da!" on it.
Funny as hell! Also, the "interview" with a deadpan Paul McCartney, you know, the singer Kanye West "discovered" a few years back. (Hilariously ignorant fools actually believed that story.) That skit was funny, too.
There are more Matt Foley sketches out there! Matt Foley scaring kids straight in prison, a scary halloween story, at the gym, motivational Santa. That was a special time on SNL. 💖
May 8, 1993, I remember watching and recording this episode because Christina Applegate/Kelly Bundy was hosting and Married...With Children was my favourite show. Midnight Oil was the musical guest, they did Truganini and My Country, I really liked their performances, should check them out for a song reaction.
I've been a fan of yours for a few years, Leo....my wife finally watched this one with me. She loves you too, Little Brother. Nice job. Check out more of his SNL stuff. Classic.
Love Chris Farley!! Another good SNL one when him, David Spade, and Adam Sandler were all young is Gap Girls. Also, please react to Adam Sandler's tribute song to Chris Farley. Great reaction!! 🙂
Great reaction bro! 👍🏿 The early to mid 90s was THE LAST great period of SNL. In terms of comedy duos on SNL, it was Mike Myers & Dana Carvey, and Chris Farley & David Spade. Together, Spade & Farley were solid comedy gold and good friends. I miss Chris Farley. 😪 Hopefully, you'll react to Wayne's World 1 and 2 soon.
The dad was Phil Hartman. You Gotta watch more of his sketches. He played Frankenstein and all kinds of funny shiz on SNL. The mom was Julia Sweeney and the daughter is Christina Applegate. Excellent cast, this sketch!! So classic
I'm so glad you did this one! Lots of good suggestions here, but Chris Farley and Patrick Swayze trying out for Chippendales needs to go on your list, too. Thanks!
What a classic. It kills me how much Spade had to hold it in. You gotta check out Chris Farley on SNL in the Chip N Dale's sketch with Patrick Swayze. It is one of the best ever.
Word on the street that Matt Foley and Axel Foley are related. They made millions together. Matt as a motivational speaker and Axel as a leader of a multi-jurisdictional task force. If you get it, you get it.
HOW MUCH DO I LOVE YOU RIGHT NOW?!? My very favorite skit from SNL ever. Chris Farley you are so missed, but I know you’re in HEAVEN….IN A VAN……DOWN BY THE RIVER!!! ✝️💜✝️
I remember seeing this back in the day. Watching it on a little TV on my bedroom on headphones and trying not to laugh so my mom didn't know I was up late watching SNL...
Yeah, I never knew until reading the comments that Farley and Spade were close friends in real life. I thought they just worked together well. Which you'll hear tons of stories of actors that performed brilliantly together but aren't really friends.
A couple of gems from this: David Spade can hardly keep a straight face and is on the verge of laughing. You can hear the giggle when Chris picks him up. The part when Chris jumps/falls on the table and breaks it was completely his own idea and not planned or part of the script. You can see how surprised David and others are when seeing their facial expressions right after it happens. Love this skit!
Chris and David were best of friends and Chris would always take it as a challenge and make it his personal mission in every skit they did together to make him break character.. and here is a prime example.. one of my favourites and an all-round iconic SNL skit of all time.
There's a lot of documentaries about Chris Farley and they're tear jerkers. So talented and also tormented by addiction and loneliness. Glad you enjoyed this skit. I loved all of Farley's Matt Foley skits. You should see his Chippendales skit with Patrick Swayze.
I believe that Farley & Spade met on *SNL* and became friends there. Also, Spade has a new Netflix stand-up show that was just released this past Tues., I believe. So great to see you laugh, Leo! 😃👍
SNL did a good one, called Schmitt’s Beer with Chris Farley and Adam Sandler. I won’t spoil it, but you’d have to do the one with the original sample from Van Halen’s “Beautiful Girls.” It’s hilarious. One of the funniest skits SNL ever did. But this is legendary. RIP, Chris Farley.
Chris Farley and David Spade were almost like the Abbott and Costello of the 90's, in a way. Two peas in a pod.. I can't think of one without thinking of the other.
@davidhasselblad2898 "non animated" ........ david gets it. animated condescends thought and limits imagination. our brains are more powerful than that, and bill's acting is infinitely better anyhow. bill's helicopter bit is solid gold, high art, for the ages ...you don't throw 25 cent machine decal stickers all over it. damn. thank you, sane man (david). speaking of "dark but funny" ..."sane man" by bill hicks, recommended.
Lol, my brother has all the best moments. Years ago when things were going on and I mused to him about where I might be in a year. Answer: "Living in a van down by the river."
SNL has been running a long time. I have to say that the late 80’s to mid 90’s were SNL magic years. Fantastic cast. This skit also had the late, great, Phil Hartman in it. He was one of my favorites on SNL. Loved Caveman Lawyer. I love this skit because Farley gets Spade to break character and he starts laughing. Still has me rolling every time I watch it. Laugh so hard, it actually brings tears to my eyes.
As a fellow Wisconsin cheesehead, I pick up on Chris's Wisconsin accent, it is so thick I love it. Especially the older people here have that accent. I find it so comforting. It's home, and the people here are so good, and friendly!
Chris was cut from a different kind of cloth.... A guy that was born to be infectious and make people laugh... Its why its hurts so much that hes gone.... Thanks for bring back the classics Leo - Glad you are getting to experience them!
Heh, David Spade trying to keep a straight face is hilarious. Phil Hartman (the dad) was another one tragically lost way too early (wife shot him). Everything 90s and earlier on SNL had such iconic comedians. This channel is a great platform for more short-form stuff like SNL skits and other comedy clips. I know music videos are tough with all the copyright stuff.
"Proud Mary" (Rollin' on a River) was done by Tina Turner, but was originally a Creedence Clearwater Revival song, that would be a good one for you to react to on your other channel. Marijuana is not a gateway drug; that's just an old drug war talking point.
If there's a gateway drug, it's Alcohol. I was arguing on playstation about that with someone. They insisted it was weed. I said I had Alcohol first, followed by cigarettes, followed by pot. Not the other way, and most of my friends' experiences were the same.
Almost correct -Many people scroo their lives up with weed alone. I work on a military base, and they test randomly. I've seen people lose $80,000 a year jobs after getting warned, and then getting fired because they couldn't stop smoking. I'm not attacking the morality of drug use, but weed is certainly not harmless...Addiction sucks no matter what the substance....
@@johnathandavis3693 that's cause they can't comprehend why they fight for freedom when they aren't free. Just because they screwed up their lives, IN YOUR OPINION, doesn't mean it was the weed, nor does it mean weed is a gateway. I'd rather have stoners shooting guns than a drunk dude
The good old days of SNL! My favorite Era. I always thought the belt thing was just part of his character act. Lol oh man...I miss that guy. RIP Mr. Farley. The laughs just aren't the same without you.
