Meinl Cymbal artist Matt Garstka and Animals As Leaders live in Atlanta, GA on February 12, 2013 performing "Wave of Babies." Check out Matt's Meinl cymbal set up here - meinlcymbals.co...
naaah, they're too busy doing new shit! Rightfully so! And the drums on that album are legendary as it is, their time is better spent doing what they're doing. Although I do have to say.... it would be lovely
4:09 He's like "Ahh, finally some fast straightforward double bass parts, that require absolutely no effort and attention on my part. Time for me to relax and catch my breath..."
@@bakedandsteakeddon't hate. Gospel drummers started that. It's just recorded music history. Because they'd try to imitate fills sounding like kicks and floor Tom's alike
Seeing as each member of the band is treating each song as a showcase of their mastery of polyrhythms, odd meter scaling, arpeggios, etc., it's fitting that they all overplay their parts a bit. I can see why this guy goes 'animal' in their songs - *all* of the band members are showboating through most of it. Their incredible sense of time where they always find their "1" in the count is impressive.
***** Oh I agree, that was more in light of other comments made. If you read my whole comment, I'm actually saying what you're saying. All of the guys are on another level, not just the drummer.
Matt Halpern is another rock drummer with finesse. Also, when Thomas Pridgen played with the Mars Volta, that just showed why more gospel drummers should play rock music.
I really like the dry sounding cymbals though. :D and the he is fusing them gospel chops with metal is just unearthly. *bows down* surely one of the best drummers in the modern era.
Look, I have a weird confession to make... am I the only one that looks at the Meinl logo and thinks it looks like "AAL"? .. (the weird m thing is the to As and the vertical "meinl" is the L)... I know.. I'm obsessed.
what happens when talented musicians get together and play progressive music toying with time signatures and other conventions? 100 years ago they called it jazz. i guess this is "millennial" jazz. what will these crazy kids think up next ?!
Incredible drummer, but I prefer Navene's playing on the outro of this song, check out his San Francisco video. Garstka is no doubt got the chops on Navene, however Navene's playing I feel enhances the music more as a whole. Like he makes that last groovy breakdown just that much better, accentuates the groove. Whereas when I hear Garstka, I'm thinking wow some insane drumming, rather than wow that breakdown sounds so damn good. Hard to explain, but ah well.
He wouldn't be this good without the drummers before him that influenced his style. Like Peart and Bonham, Garstka will highly influence the next generation of great drummers. I can't wait to see what the future holds- for Matt and the upcoming styles of music. Truly amazing!!!
I think all of the above are great drummers. However, when seeing this video I can definitely say that this guy has it in the bag as far as technique, improvisation, finesse, and overall solid chops. I can definitely see why he's the one playing with them. Not to down play any of the other guys listed!
obviously a fantastic drummer; only two things i don't really like about this: 1) he hits those cymbals a little too hard/crazily imo. i know it's metal but it just looks kind of out of control in a lot of parts. and 2) i don't like how he changed the fills. they suited the music better originally... his seem to be more linear/gospel type, a la his background, but they kinda destroy the transitions here
I disagree & raise the idea that they enhance the music even more so. His gospel-chops style breathes new groove / life into these songs, and comparatively to how the original programmed tracks are on AAL's debut (which btw did frequently utilized the linear / gospel style you reference), I think they're much better. I've always wanted to see AAL perform with a drummer whose background stems from that area, so i'm very pleased to see Garstka instead of Navene as the band's drummer - he's the next gen of drum "heroes" and his stylistic background is massive.
both styles are suitable for this. regardless of people's opinions on it, i absolutely believe a drummer should be allowed to inject their own personality into the music and let it stand to be heard. whether or not it's someone's preference is fine and i respect your opinion on it, but they should be allowed to have that chance. at the end of the day, the choice was up to the rest of the band for said drummer, because they obviously saw something to it.
***** I think most of the time he improvs a lot of the fills, so maybe they don;t enhance the music as much because they arent planned out but it is way more impressive that he improvs that shit!
tocara con esa fuerza e igual toca mejor que muchos y es su manera su estilo, que toque en ese estilo y no te guste ok, pero eso no lo disminulle porque a ti te parezca
You misunderstand, I don't look for compexity in drumming. The secion you mentioned is fantastic indeed, but it's the velocity and timing of the fill I referenced that, to me anyways, makes it stand-out. Gartska is amazing when it comes to whipping out "the fuq just happened" fills, hence why I love that one.
Charlie's Drum Corner That's the fill in the original (programmed drums) version of the song, he's just playing it as it was written there. If anything, you should be lauding Misha Mansoor for that one.
Right, except programming a drum fill and playing it are two COMPLETELY different things. I'm seeing Garstka play here and will praise his work and Misha's when I listen to the actual song. Pretty obvious if you ask me.
cyberskelet0n Mansoor's shitty drum programming, thank God, has nothing with this song. Check the info. More over, the exact fill is absent in the original. So you wrote shit two times in a row.
Hmm maybe, personally I would like them for this kind of stuff, seems a great deal of drummers in the same area seem to used a lot of the dry series as well.
Matt truly is one of the best. Can't help but think of some old Opeth when I watch him play. Definitely a musicians' band filled with incredible talent. Love watching them at work!
Well theres advanced playing and then theres this. This is beyond advanced and i dont know what the word is to call your playing. Maybe super f@cking ultra extreme advanced. Haha I dunno… 🤟🏻
Matt has only been playing this style for a few years, he's incredible in every aspect of the kit. You should hear him on some fusion shit with his dad.
all the cymbals he uses are so dry and stuff! like i dont even know but i absolutely love his choice in cymbals... it's not your average mb20 stuff a majority of Meinl people have, it's just a unique taste and i like that
I like these dry cymbals, the bright ones have way to much over tone and sometimes get really annoying, i like how you can hear each individual hit with these cymbals,
i think the correct answer for this is the drum mic interface for the recording equipment used "gates" the mics for an amount of time once a certain db is achieved. This keeps out a lot of noise except the drums being hit. the other end of this sword is: the drums, kick and cymbals come off sounding shit, but at least theyre isolated and you can distinguish each strike from the next.
If they did make it so that you could hear the peak of the hit as well as the resonance without being so loud they would have to modify the actual wavelength of each hit, thus altering the character of the cymbal. now these cymbals are very dry so they will have a shortened resonance but they have more than what this video entails with its audio. great cymbals :D. If you want to find what they really sound like go to memphisdrumshop channel or their website and find them. really good recordings.
I think that's cause of the recording and mics rather than the cymbals themselves. Now I'm no expert but I know that when you hit cymbals as hard as he does it makes it so that the peak of the soundwave is very high relative to the resonant sound to the cymbal. If they made it so that you could hear the resonance in the cymbals (because they do have them) it would be ridiculously loud and probably would clip your speakers.
Navene is an awesome drummer; but I'm curious to hear how Matt will perform the new material live especially since he has more toms he can deliver more dynamics in his playing. Now no one get all pissy Im just saying Navene even though I loved it played in a kind of monotone, hard hitting style.
everything sounds great on his kit just a personal preference id like if his snare didnt sound so choked and more throaty and some different crashes cause some of them were a little to similar sounding to the chinas and probably are from the same line.
Well fuck as if this song wasn't already hard to play. Now this machine of a player adds so much extra groove that its literally impossible to cover now. If only I can be half as good as he is I will die happy
Joey Hathaway damn man. I listened to this from start to finish and sang the whole tune. I already watched this Garstka vid *loads* of times so I know the fills pretty well, and I must say.. your transcription was close to perfect. I salute you. Nice work. p.s.: you should do more
agreed. he should have a crash that cuts more, and maybe a china too. they're all a bit too dry and "flat". but it's more a matter of what i'm used to hearing than anything else.
Yea, he's dope. He's from Berklee College of music and has done some shed videos with other drummers like Yaahn Hunter Jr, Darion Ja'Von, and Sean "Chopz" Wright. He's a MONSTER on drums
His cymbals are dry because he wants the sound to cut. He plays a lot of things quickly. Last thing you need is for the cymbals to overpower everything else he's doing.
Matt is just plain killing it like it was the last time he would ever be playing drums again. Navene was great in studio but not very animated live I thought. I haven't seen Matt live yet but I will in Ibor City in Feb. can't fucking wait. It's drummers like Matt that keep me motivated as a drummer. His intensity is just fucking sick. Matt has a great future in music ahead of him but when you work that hard you deserve it. Mdross95 is crazy Matt brought this song to life!
