“Gospel of the gauge.” Love it!

That’s how we were taught in the police academy 30 (yikes) plus years ago. Still taught that way. Good stuff guys.

Love the fact that the “whoops” with the combat reloads were not edited out. A mark of a humble and good instructor!

Always preferred velcro shotshell cards stuck to the receiver, brass up. Very secure and very fast to rip off an empty card and slap a full one on.

Thanks for more lessons on the "Gospel of the Gauge"! I appreciate the finer points on pulling the shell out of the side saddle. For combat reloads, I also like how you equate "brass on top" with "over the top" loading method vs. "brass facing down" with the "loading from underneath" method. I've practiced both ways, but would always get confused which way to load my side saddle, having to go through trial-and-error when setting up. I have those orange dummy shells to dry-fire practice with, and they are significantly lighter. Nonetheless, they do help with practicing at home safely and getting most of the manual dexterity down. The actual heavier weight feels better, but with buckshot being so expensive, I am okay with that trade-off. The main problem is getting the shotgun manipulations down, even if it's not with as heavy piece of ammo.

Sitting in AMMCON 2019, I turned to my left and Matt was sitting right next to me and I blurted out, “Holy crap, you’re Matt Haught!” 😂 Super humble guy!

Bottom loading will allow the shell to just fall back into the palm, for another attempt, if the loading is fumbled the first time. Fumbling an over-the-top attempt can often result in a shell on the ground. This is how we were instructed in the academy.

I'm convinced over-the-top became prevalent because of worn-out sidesaddles requiring brass-up carry

The perfect dummy shell is a fired shell loaded and crimped with the spent primer left installed. You may need to put some type of inert powder to get column height. Orange AA's are easy to find.

Hahaha I guess I won't be seeing you in Denver any time soon; stay warm guys! Thanks for the video. I got weighted dummy rounds from Midway USA that have black plastic instead of brass. I like them. I just got my first shotgun with my last stimulus check and took it to the range yesterday. Wow! I love the pump shotgun! I've shot a few semi auto before deciding I want one, but I'm happy I got a pump action. Also, one RU-vid guy says he likes to go under (vs over) because he feels less likely to drop it. Thanks again!

Adding an appropriate diameter dowel rod inside of a spent shell and cutting to flush at the 2 3/4" length will simulate the weight, rigidity, and length of a live shell.

Look at "B-Unique" dummy rounds. Proper weight and size. But they are the same color as some live shells except for a green or blue crimp.

I hadn't seen these before, thanks for the tip. They make an 'orange' hull version, but from the photos it looks fairly reddish. I'll likely still snag some and give them a try.

idk if its a good idea but to get the weight up on a dummy shell just do like you suggested with a spent shell full of wax but slip a weight or two equal to that of an actual shell into the wax so its more realistic.
@jmphydeaux
@jmphydeaux 3 года назад
I went to the effort of making a few dummy shells. I weighted them w/ old nuts and bolts and hot glued them in. The only problem was when I decided to spray paint them yellow to clearly ID them as dummies. That 1 layer of paint was enough to get the dummies stuck in the barrel. Ended up buying the orange dummies off Amazon. But I'll probably fill them as well.

Any chance of a close-up on that sight system at all?? I have a couple of plain barrel 14"-ers and an 18.5" VR barrel with Vang front but I'd LOVE a VR 14" (potentially with that sight set-up)...

The solution I came up with on the weight issue of dummy rounds was to glue 2 dimes in the recess on the front. It’s not exact weight, but it’s close.

The amount of fine motor skills required to accomplish this over the reciever reload seems unlikely to make it very useful in a real world situation when your adrenaline is rocking. Seems more like range theatrics to me. Hell he even screwed it up during his demonstration when the only pressure comes from the red light on the camera. He got it right-ish the second time but you don't get to warm up in real life.
