@@dlwst44 she was just bad to Matt in Season 2. And season 2 had bad writing, with the writers strike. Julie was also struggling with finding her place in her Family, in season 2 when she becomes an older sister at 15 years old. That led to some feelings of resentment. And with her Dad gone for 8 months leads to some behavioral issues. For all the other seasons, Julie supported Matt through all the struggles with his grandmother. In season 1 she forgave Matt for standing her up at the library and instead jumped in and helped him. In season 3 she was nothing but encouraging Matt to go to Chicago to study art. And pushed her Dad to make him Wide Receiver because Matt wanted it, and knew he would be great at it. Also, not to mention she never left his side when his Dad died. Julie was not a bad person she was just immature. Which is realistic for a teenager.

@@DylanLovesBrenda I always found that Julie was the best version of herself with Matt. I also think that seeing Matt with his grandmother helped her grow up. She really loved his grandmother. But it was obvious that when she was with Matt she was the best version of herself.

@@lauraschoenborn3544 exactly, I always get annoyed by the excessive hate towards Julie because I feel like she definitely was humbled in s2 when Matt didn't just take her back and they rightfully both had time independently to just heal. Julie basically lost stability in her family when her dad moved away and didn't feel like she knew herself anymore, she felt constricted by her life, Matt was also probably drifting away a bit after winning state and going to a bunch of parties and she never cared about him being a football player or being the stereotypical IT couple at high school. I also think people put Matt too high on the pedestal. One issue I had with him early on was how he lacked assertiveness/confidence and that showed in how he was acting at the start of s2, just letting this (Julie and the Swede) happen before his eyes. even coach tells him to do something about it. Thankfully, he grows into that role later on and Julie in s3 is moreso showing initiative with rekindling with Matt which shows she genuinely cared and missed him. the fact that they always come back to each other and how genuine and easygoing their dynamic is when they are happy together, it just feels right. In a way they definitely do seem to parallel Eric and Tami when they were younger, and Julie is scared of becoming her parents in s2 (she is seeing their marriage at its most strained point, given the circumstances), but by s5 she sees their strong marriage as an example to look up to.

Julie gets a bad rap for this season. People want to get down on her for being sixteen and having been emotionally and half physically abandoned by her parents. I agree. I did not like Julie in season 2. But she was also poorly written in season 2 like just about everyone else. Tami was also pretty poorly written in season 2 did not like her much either in season 2. I do understand a bit of where Julie was coming from with the breakup, all of a sudden you are in a serious relationship. She was manipulated and charmed by the Swede. Also, no teenager wants to be there parents. She regretted breaking up with Matt because she realized what a big mistake she made. Everyone has moments where they regret a breakup.

It was regret. She was charmed by the Swede. She realized that she made a huge mistake with the Swede but she didn’t realize how it looks when you dump the guy you dumped your ex for and then go back to your ex. Personally the whole thing with the Swede was weird and really bad writing. Almost all character arcs were off in season 2, it was pretty obvious in season 3 that the writers never wanted to break Matt and Julie up the way they were magically friends again. Season 3 was like total damage control.

Julie is not my favorite character not the worst though. I feel bad for her a little in season 2, there is nothing worse than making a decision to break up with someone and then regretting it. Did she deserve Matt's coldness or seeing him with those girls yeah but we've all been there. Made a mistake and wanted someone back. Glad they got these two back together. They had been through a lot and there really wasn't anyone better for them.
@burritogamer3984

exactly. in s3 even, it feels like that time apart was good for them, they had the chance to recalibrate and Julie is also the one initiating most of the conversations with Matt. she clearly knows she hurt him , and she wants to try again. I picture Matt still loves her too, and although cautious he has been able to heal from the previous year. We also see that he goes through his own very low point at numerous points, and when his with Julie in these times, she is always supportive of Matt.

@DylanLovesBrenda
@DylanLovesBrenda Год назад
It’s not realistic especially because they still loved each other. I have friends that started dating in 7th grade, got serious in high school. Broke up to date other people for an amount of time and got back together. Over 20 years later, 3 kids later, they are still married and happily. It happens, you think the grass is greener and it’s not. Sometimes it takes a situation like this to grow up and realize they are the ones. Meeting your person so early in life, you have to branch out. If someone held some mistake over my head that I regretted when i was 16 that would be so unfair and shitty.
@burritogamer3984
@burritogamer3984 Месяц назад
@@DylanLovesBrenda exactly. I actually think the show needed to depict something messy like this. If they were just some idealistic high school sweetheart couple , then got married through the show without any conflict or bumps in the road, I think it would have rang false. Especially because Julie and Matt come from such different households and face large upheaval in their lives. the fact that they went through all the things they did from s2-5 and still ended up together and showed genuine love makes it more impactful in my opinion, and we see that Julie truly does care about Matt

yes, I don't like how some people think Julie is just settling for Matt or she doesn't truly love him , when a lot she does in the show proves the opposite. If she didn't really care about Matt like that, she would have just started dating another guy and not have come to apologize and take accountability. in s3, she would have never rekindled things with him, but time and time again we see that Julie does love Matt and when they are together, she is nothing but supportive of his own personal issues (such as in s3 with his grandma, or losing his position as QB1)
