It’s a good way of showing why a low intelligence is bad in this sort of situation without talking down to the character (any more than saying “sorry dude, but you ARE pretty dumb”) Its not just that Grog isn’t smart, it’s that he’s hot headed and eager to protect Pike and his friends. So he’s willing to take what seems like an easy way out an ignore any possible consequences.

12:38 This was a great way for Matt make sure the player didn't feel like they "wasted" a high-level spell. Bolstering the spirits of the refugees is something that feels good, both for the players and their characters. "A simple mind looking for a simple solution to a complex problem" is one of my all-time favourite Matt descriptions. It just sums up Grog in that moment, and... Grog in general, so well. I always thought that when the party though the attack was their fault, they meant because they killed Brimscythe. At the time, they weren't sure Krieg was a villain, he only attacked because they were looting his hoard.

i like that it's not their fault because main character syndrome can be annoying when player characters think the world revolves around them and i loved that there were all sorts of other factors at play! the world feels much more well-realized rather than an experience that's solely tailored to a player's hero fantasies. i think the story is much stronger the way matt designed it.

I think the party enjoyed playing with the idea that the chroma conclave was their fault, but I'm not sure I agree that they actually wanted it to be that way. It makes a lot of sense that the characters would worry it was their fault, but it also makes sense that in the grand scheme of things, they're actually taking the blame for something they had no real part in. That feels so much more true to life for me. It's not as dramatic, true, but it's more authentic IMO.

Love that Percy & Grog stand off so much! I’ve only seen the cartoon and random clips of this arc so I had no idea this was a thing. The fact they are both touched by darkness and Grog brought it to Percy to almost have touched by darkness chit chat and probably to get his input on the wording of the wish…and then to suddenly ratchet up to 11 - amazing! In my head picturing Percy face down an angry Goliath like this really ups his cool factor no matter how many times Tailsen rips on him. Grog accusing Percy of not being trustworthy and going to do something with it is such malarkey considering what Grog immediately tries to do. 😅
@JukkaliMx

It's just that Percy and Grog are, in some regards, antithesis of each other: Percy is a noble-born intellectual with unending curiosity; while Grog is a low-intelligence barbarian who spent his life fighting for everything he had, and rushes into everything. The thing they have in common is that both their players take joy in pursuing those personalities to their own detriment, at times; and both Taliesin and Travis enjoy a bit of chaos with their D&D xD

One thing I learned when this type of situation unfolded at the table is that, even when the players understand that the conflict is between their characters, the players can experience a real adrenaline rush that can raise temperatures if they aren't used to it. When Marisha goes into her conversational rage, the actor in her is emoting in a way that can produce a response in the player as well as the character. The way the amygdala works during these times has a real and detrimental impact on a person's ability to reason and receive language. If the situation gets to that point, it's better to take a break to let everyone cool off than to try to have a 'teachable moment' while tempers flare.

@@Quintzal Honestly, as somebody who still thinks the whole "Critical Role makes players worse and creates bad expectations" argument is absolutely wrong... this is the one element I think could cause that problem. If you watch this scene, you can forget that every single person at the table is an actor, AKA someone who makes a living by separating their own emotions from the emotions of their characters, and is quite good at doing it. A new player, or a player who is not used to this kind of scene, could think this is the way you are supposed to play inter-party conflict, and cause issues when things end up getting heated between players. ... which is why I also agree we need that video about inter-party conflict ASAP, by the way...

I think the responsibility issue takes away from there being a larger world and villains having their own agency. As it stands, Elora and vox machina share some blame, but obviously Thordak was the driving force, a plan in place for a long time. Krieg infiltrated Imans leadership, Vox happened to stumble across that fact, which generated motivation for a future plot. I think it's better it isn't their fault. This is an issue with MCU movies - the dramatically satisfying arc puts responsibility on the hero, but this lead to a future where a lot of disasters are the Avengers' fault. The same could happen to Vox Machina if they end up responsible for this disaster.

I see the point about making the attack the fault of the party, but I don't necessarily agree. That's part of the story device where the world revolves around the characters. By not doing that, the world becomes a much larger place, where things happen outside the characters' influence. I think he tied it to the characters' stories just enough to make it personal, but also keep the world moving outside their vision. Vex, Vax, and Keyleth all had personal connections to Thordak's actions, without those actions waiting around for the party to trigger them like a lazily coded video game. Of course, this is a personal preference, but my players like the fact that the world happens beyond their sight, and things can change because of their actions, or because of someone else's. But GMs should go with what works for their table. Good analysis though, and I'm surprised I wasn't subbed already. Time to rectify that.

@@CLNCJD94 copy and paste from the CR wiki “Vox Machina found a githyanki skull in General Krieg's home. They learned that a githyanki was trapped in a jewel embedded in a skull. It promised to grant a wish to them if they released him. Matt revealed after the campaign concluded that the spirit trapped in the skull was that of a brutal githyanki pirate captain imprisoned generations ago. Had anyone agreed to free him, their souls would have exchanged places, with the captain taking over the body of his liberator, whose spirit would have been then trapped in the skull. The githzerai who had imprisoned the pirate would then have begun hunting him down.” Definitely a really cool sounding side story that we missed out on but probably for the best since having that happen literally right as the chroma conclave arc was beginning would have led to somewhat messy storytelling.

Its such and impressive moment when Mat has the red dragon announce that the protectors of this city are at fault, and deceive his player in thinking that he's talking about them. It's such a clever move and Im completely loving it. I also understand that the players wanted this to be their fault, but I suspect that Mat was a bit blind sighted here and wanted only to give them the correct information. He wasn't quite role-playing with them as much as he was informing them. As you said, he wants them to understand the situation correct in ordere for them to a they way they want without mistakes. And they need to see the whole picture to do that. In that moment with Alura. Mat was mainly trying to give them the correct information and make sure that they received it,role playing was a side act, not the main thing, so he wasn't paying attention to the fact they they wanted to be in fault for this

An additional reason why the party had good reason to think they were responsible (albeit a more meta one): In the previous episode, Matt interrupted Travis's turn to explicitly narrate Vex's internal thoughts, including connecting their present situation with a memory of "four orbs embedded in a wall". Totally understandable that the players would think they were responsible when the DM interjects to connect their past and present experiences like that. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-9EToAf4nhDw.htmlsi=m40kYjpJfcvg6ehr&t=12991

At one point while talking to the party, she says "I just lost my connection to Westruun". What you're describing (no info until you try and it fails) is how most people would assume the spell works, rules-as-written, because the sigil sequence is something you only use while casting the spell. It's a code. The spell description doesn't say anything about being mystically linked to it, it's just information you memorize. Is it ironic to say that Vox Machina, the main characters, really pushing for this all to be their fault kind of rubs off as....main character syndrome? What I like about Matt's style as a DM is his world exists, Vox Machina are just a very small part of it. Pretty much all of this campaign (including the pre-stream) they've stumbled into. They were asked to look into the disappearance of Kiva and "oh, there's an evil Beholder here," they drop off the delivery, happen to come upon a Hydra "oh, there's a monster hunting guild we've accidentally crossed" Even the Briarwoods arc, Percy wasn't part of their plans, he just happened to over hear Uriel mention their names and insert *himself* in it. I see the intriguing story directions this could take if it were their fault, but I feel like after the first two times you're told it's not your fault, you don't need to keep fishing.

h'uh... i thought Grog being "touched by Darkness" was in reference to him having the power of Craven Edge with him. I'm guessing that helped at least.
@SupergeekMike

That’s what I assumed at the time, and it might be what the skull meant/sensed, but Grog didn’t know at this point that Craven Edge was anything to worry about, so I’m assuming Grog meant the lich scar.

PLEASE go into further depth about PC conflict!!! My players love it narratively but none of us has the skill or experience with handling the frustrations that come with a genuine argument. Especially about a point that the characters truly would think and believe and take sides over. Session zero I heard "we should argue less" then session one we had to talk the fighter out of shooting the bard (in-game, of course). Advice for DMs about facilitating genuinely divisive PC interactions that we don't feel bad about later, and advice for players about how to argue what they really think in ways that don't cause any hurt feelings would be super appreciated

Would be super interested for a future video about player conflict. Doesn’t look like Matt did anything here specifically so he must trust them to be okay with the result? I mean the roleplay between each other and the situation feels like ‘the juice’ we roleplayers love but I have seen it ruin games before and even my local DM who is great made it clear in session zero that inter-party conflict wasn’t allowed. There has got to be a way to let the right kind of drama in 😅

2:30 with naming your enemies differently to their real names, I ran into an issue with this in the last game I DMed I had a character who was the head of the bandit grouping attacking the party. I hadn't come up with a proper title for him, but he held the key for an important section of the game featuring a lot of useful loot and weapons for the party. He was also the only enemy with a shotgun (the setting was more modern) To counter this, I had "Bandits" and labelled him as "the bandit king" on paper. The only issue: the bandit king is the name of a villain in the Team Starkid musical Trail to Oregon Of course my table were all theatre nerds, so the result of my poor naming choice was that every time he took his turn, the table would stop combat and say "the bandit king" and mimic a section of the musical before continuing I wouldn't change a thing.

As someone that is following Campaign 3...I see the creature in the skull as maybe Prodasos? (sp)...That would make sense with Matt's world building. Even if it wasn't back then...it could fit for now. Since he did make it unresolved.

Predathos is a godlike entity sealed in the moon, this is was just a githyanki pirate whose soul was sealed in a gem and placed in his own skull by some rival githzerai.

I just noticed, did not Scanlan pledge at the end with everyone else? I know Sam wasn't there but I don't think Matt as Scanlan took the agreement to slay the dragons and given what happens to him I'd say that's p poignant

I'm glad Matt stopped doing insight checks that way. I understand why someone might think that's a good idea, but on some level it ends with you speaking for a player to another player. Unless there is some shenanigans going on. The way he does it now feels way better, by having the player roll deception or persuasion and not say which and then ask them what they feel is revealed based on how good the insight check is.

I like to think of the domino effect of checks and balances of the world like the mind flayer colonies psionic abilities hamstrung the briarwoods vox ended the colony enabling the briarwoods to go ahead trying to summon Vecna, vox stopped that so there was nothing strong enough to challenge the chroma conclave vox stops that so now the nein have the ruby vanguard / lucien has freedom to make moves then Uko'toa the next thing and so on. All dominoes started from vox taking out a mind flayer hive brain. I mean in the alt universe where they didn't get involved the mind flayers vs vecna vs chroma conclave fucks the world but still at least lucien and ludinus would probably be toast (or hiding on the moon pumping up predathos to challenge the other super bosses).

If an opponent has a name or is an unknown type of creature, I try to give the PCs their name, unless there's a reason to keep that information from them. Knowing the dragon is named Vorugal doesn't give any metagaming advantage, and simplifies table conversation. Besides, anything that isn't given a specific name will be referred by my players as Fartboy, or something along those lines; that name will then stick, and the actual name will never be spoken again.

definitely agree that the chroma conclave should have been their fault at least partly. it always feels weird when the plot revolves around the Npcs but its the PCs that enact the resolution

I actually hated that the party (especially keyleth) wanted this to be their fault. Placing blame doesn't solve things. I feel it leads to analysis paralysis and focusing on who's at fault takes away from real discussion of a solution. I honestly wanted to skip parts of this episode cause I found it so annoying. And Matt did a great job trying to get the players to let go of the blame every time they went that way cause they were so stuck on it. I feel it makes the world of Exandria more expansive and real if its not VM's fault. IRL things just happen.

The problem with that viewpoint is that we as viewers have a distorted perspective on it. If we remember vox machina fought krieg on there own without any reason or cause previously and killed him, because he defended his hoard. As far as they know, it's their fault for taking him out, and as far as they know that only reason the other dragons knew is because they went back and triggered the orbs

I disagree on one point, I'd say Matt definitely fudged against Laura's insight role just because insight against other players is too awkward to run and the scene needed a lack of clarity to maintain momentum. That's what I would have done.

I run a homebrew game and I work SO HARD for my players to feel that while they have influence over some events the world ultimately still functions aside of their actions having EVERYTHING tie back to The Shits feels inorganic and tropey, not everything has to be a result of their actions, other people in the world exist and also have an input in what happens in it I hated this episode because the martyr complex is really annoying. also, the overacting is pretty cringy; this is what happens when actors don't have directors that aside, really good analysis video! I have yet to find one of your videos I haven't enjoyed or gotten something out of
