Can't believe it's been almost 10 years since this news first broke. I remember being out to eat somewhere in my hometown when the news broke and then going home & listening to the initial reports on ESPN & I was just in complete shock. I was at the last game Paterno coached (the snow game against Illinois) & even then I never saw this coming. I also was there when he won his 400th game. And in an instant. it seemed that none of it mattered anymore. I'm a VA Tech Hokies fan in an entire household of Penn State fans, so this was a notable, sad event for us as a CFB loving family.

Same too. I remember it well. I was my freshman year in high school and I could remember watching Dancing With the Stars with the family and I overheard my mom and older brother talking about an assistant coach at Penn State raping boys and I was like: “This can’t be Penn State?” And sure enough it was. The next when I was in intervention class with my brother and he was talking about it with the teacher who so happened to be my football coach and I talked about it with him and I said I thought it was a bunch of BS and the NCAA is like: “Now that we already bullied Ohio State long enough, who’s next on the list so that we can give Michigan a fighting chance at a national title let alone a Big 10 conference title?” Coach gave that are you kidding look and said “Do you know what that guy did? He should be shot” I didn’t know about the scandal well enough back then and looking back I feel very stupid for saying those remarks. And ever since the scandal, I’ve hated Penn State and every single thing about them to the core. Go Bucks

Matt Millen has nothing to apologize for. I've always respected him as a broadcaster, and now I respect him even more. His heart was truly broken for Sandusky's victims, and also for the damage done to coach Paterno and the Penn St program. He was honest, emotional, and truly horrified by the whole situation.

Matt Millen was obviously sickened and shocked by what Jerry Sandusky did. He was emotional. But his point was that even though it was an emotional issue, even for him, those emotions should not drive people to make other decisions. It was like when he said that part of him wanted to "take care of it" himself...he stepped back and said that doing so would be the wrong thing. Divorcing yourself of emotions when making decisions doesn't mean you can't have emotions. You just need to TEMPORARILY put those emotions aside and be rational.

I don't think Paterno was a monster or supported child sexual assault... but I cannot make an argument where he's not to blame in some way for enabling it to continue or not doing something to stop it. And it really is sad that many people in my state only want to argue about how Paterno is the victim here and shouldn't lose his god status when there is a list of abused kids who really are victims. Whatever we do, don't tear down a football deity by holding him accountable for his decisions or lack of action! He built a library! God status revoked, he's mortal.

@steveparkin2366
@steveparkin2366 3 года назад
@@Kevin-it4fh I think its one of those things where he probably did not want to believe it. Sandusky was a long time friend, etc. I know that I have at first rejected to believe certain things that seemed too impossible to be true before I finally accepted them. The difference is, the stuff that I had a hard time accepting was not on the level of child rape by a person that I was enabling, and secondly, I eventually accepted the truth. If one of my assistants reported what was reported to Paterno... "Well, I mentioned it once to somebody in charge and nothing came of it, so I did my part, now I'm just going to pretend it never happened" would not be good enough for me to absolve myself. It's a character test. At the end of the day, Joe Paterno is who had to live with this. I don't have to judge him, he judged himself. It obviously crushed him when the story broke. He probably wondered how football became so important that it wound up preventing him from doing the right thing. I doubt Joe Paterno would be okay with a statue honoring himself in light of what happened.

Sandusky is one hell of a manipulator. That man concealed his actions for years while being heavily involved with major organizations made up of thousands of people. I always see people talking online about Paterno like he was involved with Sandusky's actions... Paterno heard from McQueary about something he saw in the showers. He should have said to McQueary, "what did you do to stop the incident?" Maybe Paterno could be criticized for that, but the eyewitness is the most accountable here.

You have to grow up in a nation of a football team and the pride of those programs to understand this. Joe Paterno was a an icon in college football and this program was so great but this kills all of that. I grew up in Nebraska and if Osborne or Devaney was involved in something like this it would be devastating. That being said the issues of Penn State were sick and God only knows how wide this was. Those behind that whole issue should be punished to the extent of the law and pray to God that he forgives them for they have a special place waiting if the word is true.

I am guessing he is feeling the equivalent to what it might feel like to be in your 50s and realize a teacher in their 80s was accused of defending such things in their 70s.

Wow, incredible. I have lived in the State College area for many of years now. For everyone who is bashing Millen obviously do not get what the Penn State family is. Penn State is more than a University. It is a lifestyle (and before all you immature people begin saying, "yeah, a pedophile lifestyle", try acting your age for once and liste). Penn State is a community. Once a Nittany Lion, more than a Nittany Lion. This is why Millen is upset, and why he cries. It is sad for alumni and all.

@AnneLiesveld It is as you say about his world unraveling because PSU became his foundation but also his foundation was that JP and JS were good people. Do you really think if JS did this kind of stuff he acted "evil" around Millen?

Don't cal it "ped" state for the staff person in the math department, don't call it that for the person who was a freshman last year who (12 years ago) was 6, for the senior who had a stressful senior year. those are a few of the people not responsible for "ped state" and it is GIVEN a reason otherwise. When you are being picky, please grammar check

I feel bad for victim one b/c of how his family treated him, and his dad was never there, that is why he was happy, he was getting presents, when Jerry stopped getting him gifts and mom money they told police the rape story and his mom started bragging. THAT IS SICK. I hope one day that gets out and his mom goes to jail. JERRY WAS GUILTY SO IT IS FINE HE IS BEHIND BARS SO IT IS WAY BETTER NOW. I feel bad for all the other victims and I hate that he did that to those poor kids.

On Sept. 18, 2005, the cocaine and vodka lost their ability to soothe Fleury’s pain. He cracked. He crumbled. "I finally had a conversation with the Big Guy Upstairs and I called Him every name in the book," Fleury said. "I told Him, 'I know the whole You-only-give-me-as-much-as-I-can-handle thing. Well, I'm full. I need you to take a little.' At the end of the conversation, I prayed for Him to take away the obsession. ..

@ThePrepnow1 An alumni? He said He graduated X-Y years and was on the football team so having a relationship. Fake tears? That looked pretty legitimate to me.

the investigation was done by former fbi agents and federal prosecutors. the man who headed the team was a former fbi director and federal judge. i am relatively certain that the facts they found are quite reliable.

I know that joe should have done more, but it is wrong to keep taking shots at people who cant defend themselves now. He is the only person for sure who knew his reasonings and everyone is making assumptions based on hearsay. I do believe he should have done more, and it was wrong that he didn't, but he never really had a chance to defend himself. Everyone needs to stop focusing on him and help the victims/ prevent this horrible act from ever recurring.

@granolanutpunch Everyone talks about this campus coach was his family as though it is so surprising. JP and JS were family because MM connected with them. That is as deep as caring about your high school english or math teacher. I have people I worked with for 1-3 years and I care alot about them. I count it a priviledge to be able to to this day have a connection to a high school music teacher through church. that is the closest I have to a long term connection of a coach.

@TheAngeltoDemon TOTALLY FINE! Givin' you some serious youtube crap. :) I knew you wanted me to google it so you said so! :) What is so wierd about this clip as a NU person is I am realizing that I am a NU person who has followed big 12 and doesn't have a clue who or when the last time that Penn State played anyone-- I recognize JP with respect to Penn State but that is about all. Very wierd to watch all this come out right as I am starting to be aware of PSU.
