When I was growing up, we played this song in the youth group band at my church. The adult leader of the youth band was an awesome guy and I loved playing this song with him, even as an adult. We are creatures of habit. If we don’t find ways to remind ourselves why we do what we do, we’re prone to just go through the motions, if not adopt some new underlying motivation altogether. Which can be especially dangerous in worship. For songwriter and worship-leader Matt Redman, this lesson came in a remarkable experience that was both personal and corporate. In the late 1990s, the preaching pastor at Redman’s church in Watford, England, sensed that their worship gatherings were going flat spiritually, that the congregation was going through the motions, and worship wasn’t flowing from the heart, like true Christian worship must. “There was a dynamic missing,” says Redman, “so the pastor did a pretty brave thing. He decided to get rid of the sound system and band for a season, and we gathered together with just our voices. His point was that we’d lost our way in worship, and the way to get back to the heart would be to strip everything away.” More Than a Song During this season, the pastor challenged the congregation to be participants in worship, not consumers. To come ready to engage with God for themselves, from the heart, not just watch with their eyes. He wanted them to come as worshipers, not as concert-goers. With the band and sound system gone, it made for an unforgettable time in the life of the church as they sanga cappella only - and for an unforgettable lesson about worship. “Before long,” says Redman, “we reintroduced the musicians and sound system, as we’d gained a new perspective that worship is all about Jesus, and he commands a response in the depths of our souls no matter what the circumstance and setting. ‘The Heart of Worship’ simply describes what occurred.” All About Jesus Imagine that experience as you sing, “When the music fades, all is stripped away, and I simply come. . . . You search much deeper within. . . . You’re looking into my heart.” Good music, catchy beats, talented musicians, even the friends and loved ones with whom we worship - these are all good things, and wonderful in the context of corporate worship. And yet when we focus on them, rather than Jesus, we are losing the heart in our worship. Jesus said to the Samaritan woman in John 4:24, “God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth.” The essence of worship is not the many good externals, but heart and head. Spirit and truth. Our spirit, stirred by the Holy Spirit, in worship over true things about God, his Son, and his gospel. The heart of worship is our heart, delighting in Jesus and expressing praise to him for the true things the Scriptures teach us about who he is and what he has accomplished for us. It is, then, “all about” Jesus, not us. It involves us, but we’re at the periphery. He’s at the center. He’s the focus. It’s his commands we consider first, not our preferences. Redman’s song is about refocusing, and re-centering, and reminding ourselves why we worship - and who we worship. Coming Back It is also a song of repentance and re-consecration, not just in worship, but all of life. Periodically, we all need a soul check. “Let anyone who thinks that he stands take heed lest he fall” (1 Corinthians 10:12). We’re so easily distracted from the main things - especially from the main person, Jesus. Hear these words in a spirit of worship and with a heart of repentance for how prone we are to wander and how often this has been not just Matt Redman’s story, but our own. Jesus is greatly honored when we bring ourselves, with the Holy Spirit’s help, back to the heart of worship again and again.

We had a huge sound system, mood lighting, and a list of songs that seemed to focus more on how we felt than who GOD is and what HE has done. I realized I was in a "Seeker Sensitive" church so the obvious next move was to leave. Since then I have been to many churches of varying denominations, some small and some large, and it's more than alarming that what is mostly missing is JESUS. Sure, many churches have great programs for children and youth, exciting music, nice auditoriums with comfortable seating, friendly greeters and even small coffee stations with snacks. But rarely have I found expository preaching, with pastors that are willing to address the difficult issues that have infiltrated the church. I've seen women and men coming to Church looking like they've been to the beach or a rodeo, clothing that is far too revealing, men wearing cowboy hats in service, all of this shows a complete lack of respect & reverence for the LORD GOD. One pastor told me, we don't want you to play any songs that mention the blood of Jesus or the Holy Spirit because we don't want to offend or frighten people away. the only thing that I would think of was, then why don't you change the name of your church from Community Church to community Center, because without the Holy Spirit and the Blood of Jesus this is just a gathering of goats looking for fuzzy warm feelings. Matt Redman was correct "It's all about you, Jesus".

2021💕 Everytime I listen to this song, It always makes me cry and realize how blessed I am and reminds me that I can't do anything without Him☝💕

I'm the same ... lived in sin for 40 years JJB ... found Christ by asking to truly KNOW Him in January, got baptised at 56 on May 5th and i encourage you to read the Bible DAILY, and to PRAY DAILY too and to find a church where your faith can GROW cos there is SO much EVIL in this world all lead by Satan ... you need to strengthen your faith DAILY. Keep your eyes, heart and mind on HIM and your life will be SO BLESSED and i hope you will say HEY to me in Heaven! Amen brother! Live IN HIM!

I love how this song is telling us we are paying more attention to the instruments and how the song sounds, but we aren't paying attention to the most important part, worshipping God.

My testimony - As a kid, I was brought up at a Penn Hills church called "Penn Hills Missionary Alliance". I attended Sunday Church Service and Wednesday Youth Groups basically every week up until my early teen years. I even read the Bible from front to back at the age of 10 (not an easy read for such a young punk lol). I also often memorized Bible Verses to earn my way into Edinboro Bible Camp. I had a lot of fun with all of those experiences. Anyways, my pap who was a devout Christian and the "rock" that held the family together, passed away when I was only 13 years old. I see now that my parents were going to church to please him, not God. Ironically, after he died, my descent into a life controlled by sin started to get out of control. I got into marijuana, alcohol, pornography, and began to disrespect my parents like it was my job. Into my twenties, things only got much much worse. I was a marijuana dealer for 7 years, slept with about 100 women (thank God I don't have any STD's), disrespected my parents to the point of face to face confrontation, lied to people, was addicted to porn and sex, served 5 months in Westmoreland County Prison, etc. Basically every step I took was an assault against God. Fast forward to more recent times - I was in a 4 1/2 year relationship with an older woman. I truly thought we were in love, I really did. I now see that that was not the case as she lacked the capacity to forgive which is not love. She would constantly throw my past in my face (as many of you are currently guilty of doing). Anyways, she discovered my porn issue and instead of talking about it in a compassionate and caring manner, she attacked me calling me names and even making false accusations. Then, she said something that really told me she was not a true Christian - She said you could fall too far from God's Grace to receive His mercy, which is NOWHERE in the Bible. (Go Ahead, read it. I dare you lol) Now don't get me wrong, women view watching porn as cheating when you are in a relationship. I get that and I admit that I was wrong for my actions. So anyway, she broke up with me. At first my mourning was for her, but gradually it turned into a mourning of my own soul. I was truly disgusted with the person I was. I no longer wanted to hurt myself or others around me any longer. I cried for several hours on my hands and knees like a little baby asking God to have mercy on me. Then I started watching RU-vid videos about how to get closer to God. Then I fell asleep for about 3 to 4 hours. When I woke up, I saw on my phone a video which I had not even selected! (I was asleep after all and had not physically touched my phone at all). It was a RU-vid video by Pastor Groeschel about "Spiritual Warrior- Your Porn Battle Plan". I couldn't believe it at first! I knew then that God was listening, God cared, and God loved me! It was at that moment that I started to believe which in turn opened my heart to Jesus. I then got on my knees all over again and wept like a little baby asking Jesus into my heart as my personal Lord and Savior. I made one key promise though...I promised to God that I would surrender it all and put Him first in my life above all, even my own family. Almost immediately after that, I felt a sudden surge of love and strength flow into my heart like a mighty rushing river! It was purely supernatural....literally knocked the breath out of me several times and gave me goosebumps all over my body. I became a Christian on August 16, 2020 - same day that Elvis died ironically. Now I possess love and strength that I never knew were possible before. I am now literally willing to die for my King Jesus Christ if need be....if it serves to glorify His Almighty Name. I have encountered much spiritual attack in the last 2 weeks or so (Satan is mad that he lost the battle over my heart/soul). In fact, even my own family members and former friends have lashed out at me over my newfound Faith. That's okay though because they also persecuted Jesus about 2,000 years ago so I am in good company. Thank you for reading and God bless you all!
