I have Huntington's Disease (HD), which is an inherited, incurable, terminal, neurodegenerative condition. I'm in the early stages with mild cognitive and physical symptoms. I inherited the condition from my late mum, Dawn. Dawn passed away from HD-related issues in 2011. Dawn inherited HD from her dad - my grandad. To put it another way, I’m now dying from the same condition that I watched slowly kill my mum and my grandad.
HD is caused by a CAG expansion mutation in the huntingtin gene (HTT) on human chromosome 4. HTT is also known as the interesting transcript 15 gene (IT15).
HD starts as an invisible illness but unfortunately doesn't stay that way. The inexorable progression of damage to the central nervous system caused by the toxic mutant huntingtin protein mounts up over the years. Eventually the damage to the patient's mind, body and soul becomes very visible indeed.
For the past decade or so I've been using a video diary and social media to document my physical and mental health changes over time due to HD. I’m sharing the information here in case anyone finds it helpful for their own journey.
