It's always such a pleasure to hear an intelligent & talented man talking about his passions and influences in such a clever way. Signore Garrone is a master and we're lucky to have him making wonderful movies in these times.

I was floored when I watched Gomorra. The episodes, the little connections in those episodes, the greater picture, and that ending... very powerful and still a very fresh movie.

I love that he started with Keaton and went straight to Andrei Rublev.❤

Nice to see him liking Robert Rossellini’s War Trilogy Set and Andrei Rublev.

His taste and choice is impeccable. From Buster Keaton to Andrei Tarkovsky. From Mizoguchi to David Lynch and Rossellini. From the pioneer of silent film to the Russian and Japaneese master and then back to Hollywood and Lynch's dream of it. And of course something from his home - the poignant war trilogy. I expected Bycicle thieves but that one has become a clichée.

As an Italian-American cinephile I am a huge fan of Matteo Garrone. He clearly has a sense of what has shaped his filmmaking vision. Matteo, sei grande, sei forte!

Ti amo e grazzi Matteo. I am sure I got that wrong, but so grateful for this visit. I will watch Io Capitono very soon.

Mizoguchi's 1939 period drama 'The Story of the Last Chrysanthemum' is a masterpiece, but a strangely vexing one, due to how frustrated I felt by the director's consistency in placing his camera at such a distance from the actors that they usually register in full shot, close-ups being used minimally. I felt the effect being sought was one akin to traditional scroll painting, with the actors figures in a horizontal tableau, but this also resulted in an emotional distancing from the characters and their situations, which likely was also one of Mizoguchi's aims. I'm glad more people are learning of this major work, one of Mizoguchi's most assured (if not necessarily most fulfilling) achievements.

love all of his films. every single one is complete different from the others. with the exception of maybe Gomorrah and Dogman being close in aesthetics... but he made few films and all of them are exceptional, uniquely his own.
