This video focuses on Matteo's Rest Stroke ('bass tech') and Free Stroke Technique as a tutorial.
I watched more videos about his incredible picking invention but there is still no lesson just focusing on it. I cut these parts out from 3 great RU-vidr's interviews with Matteo and put them together. Please subscribe to their channels:

- Streetwise Guitar: / @streetwiseguitar5113
- Ultimate School of Music: / @ultimateschoolofmusic
- And finally Matteo himself: / frontpickup53
Ps: I am the fun not only of his technique which would worth nothing in itself but of his melodic improvisations, his excellent timing, and his wide interest in lots of genres of Music

For classical I was trained that the sound should be 50% nail and 50% flesh. You don't need long nails for this. Additionally you can strengthen nails by painting a nail strengthening polish on them. I used to do it all the time when I was younger, but switched to playing with a pick. For simplicity's sake now that I'm older and don't have as much time to practice I'm switching back to fingerstyle. I used to play fingerstyle on electric but it was tough to play rock and jazz which is why I switched to a pick. Mateo has inspired me and shown me it's not impossible.

Amazing, so much talent! Thank you for this insight into his technique. I'd like to know more about his fingernail shape/length and his tapping technique. I wonder how he is able to tap without the fingernails getting in the way. Does anyone know about this or have a picture of his fingernails? Does he use a specific finger for the tapping and keep the nail short to allow for tapping?
@biscobisco1882
@biscobisco1882 Год назад
Doesn't he say early in this video that you need short nails to play this way?
@deanharringtonguitarist9684
@@biscobisco1882 Yes, but it would still be nice to know about the shape (some use rounded and some use forward or reverse ramp shapes) and see a picture of them. Once person's short is another person's long.
@ThinPicks
@ThinPicks Год назад
You have to watch it with nails on electric guitar, they're ok on nylon string but can seriously snag on thin steel ones, best to keep them quite short.
@biscobisco1882
@biscobisco1882 Год назад
@@deanharringtonguitarist9684 My point is that he's using the flesh of his fingers like a bassist, so the shape of the nails doesn't matter at all as long as they're short. It's pretty clear from the video that the nails are irrelevant.
@deanharringtonguitarist9684
He uses the nails to pluck and talks about it in one of his interviews. But he's probably playing lower on the pad by the finger print for the tapping. In this video, you can freeze frame at the 2:50 min mark and see he has fingernails that protrude past the flesh. Not long, for sure, but long enough to pluck with. They appear to be a rounded-ramp shape -- lower on the thumb side of the fingernail. I don't think the nail is used for tapping, of course, but for his arpeggio technique and his rest stroke technique he's using fingernails.

@Jimmy Galloway interesting... I've always played with my fingers and when I do a lot of gigs my index nail gets trashed and I just end up using the callus which seems to do the job. Just because he shows you what to do doesn't mean your going to be able to do it we are all built different with are own abilities some people just can't move that fast and some can't sync left and right hands with increased speed it is better imo to learn about yourself and take it from there do what you can do and don't stress what you can't because we don't all want to sound the same

@GonnaGetYouBoi
@GonnaGetYouBoi Год назад
This is great, and what a talented player. But this seems to only work for the style of music he plays. If you're playing rock, or metal, the sharp tone that the pick creates is almost necessary. When you hit the strings with your fingers, the tone always comes out alot thicker. And then what if he needs to do like pinch harmonics all over? Not that you cant do that with your fingers, but now you're making things extremely hard on yourself, just to play arpeggios fast. and unless you're playing arpeggios all the time, and for speed.. would this style even work for most players or just Matteo? If he tried a metallica riff, with his fingers, it would sound dead. So where I understand to play things, lightning fast, such as arpeggios.. he's probably correct, the pick will stifle your speed. Unfortunately for most of us, we need the pick for our rhythms. We don't all play flamenco. If theres a video someone can link me, of him playing different styles and it actually working.. that would be cool. I just cant see his style working for anything other than flamenco, or spanish styles of playing. The reason for this post, is the initial thought of alot of players is going to be "wow. i cant play arps that fast and clean, i better switch to finger style". and then they try to play some metal style riff with a sweep.. and its gonna sound awful, using just your fingers. And dropping the pick everytime you wanna sweep, probably isnt gonna cut it.
@ymelfilm
@ymelfilm Год назад
yes, you may be right. I have heard some hard rock songs from him with this fingerstyle though. Once he played Paul Gilbert, also the really icy sounding country music went very well when he did it on a telecaster.
@brianmi40
@brianmi40 Год назад
You're confusing whether he chooses to use a heavy distortion, with the attack he gets from his fingernails. He's not using the PADS of his fingers, but his fingernails, which are every bit as hard as any guitar pick. Obviously, Matteo is a jazz player, not a rock or metal player, so there's little to no chance of hearing him get into those styles much. However, you can clearly get a sense of the attack he can have, and the ability to push his guitar over into distortion any time he wants to here in the first segment at this time stamp: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-H4mzml2Tz8M.html And if you think he only plays arpeggios fast, instead of anything melodic, you really should watch him more or you don't understand what an arpeggio is. I'm quite sure Matteo couldn't care less to play a Metallica riff, just as Kirk Hammett could likely care less to play a jazz version of Autumn Leaves. To each his own. I guarantee that if you were able to ask Kirk Hammett could Matteo fill in for him one night, he'd say yes, for sure. But the reverse would be pretty much an impossibility.

La bellezza di questo ragazzo, oltre ad una bravura chitarristica mega galattica, è l'umiltà e anche il suo essere sano. In genere questi geni si danno anche tante arie oppure hanno un comportamento strambo.

Get the NOAD Solo Guitar Playing book. It teaches this stuff. Standard stuff for teaching Classical guitar. Having a good classical guitar teacher is key though. Also you really have to learn to take care of your nails.

Just a little food for thought. I was going through these and if you can 2 way pick slant and economy pick/sweep in both directions you can do these kinds of phrases. The additional secret is hybrid picking only when it is absolutely necessary. Like when he was demonstrating the minor arpeggio going backwards in 4s you could hybrid pick the first note and sweep the rest for each group of 4. Hope this helps because I like these phrasing ideas and they are definitely doable with a pick and fingers imho. Good luck!

For the "free stroke" picking, I think the reason his fingertips are almost parallel to the strings is so that he can pluck each string at almost the same distance from the bridge. This helps assure that there isn't much difference in the "timbre" of each string. This is particularly important on steel strings, but is not much of an issue on nylon strings. And, that's why his hand position for free stroke is so different to that of many Classical Guitarists.
@ramseymodiri2752
@ramseymodiri2752 2 года назад
I’ve seen this a lot in classical(I grew up playing and competing in it). Some guys would use a more parallel free stroke style and almost pop the string to get a louder sound(you get more flesh and brush of the finger at that angle) I remember a few big name guys teaching it at clinics, it would get a sound that was closer to a rest stroke(louder) withought having the disadvantages of pulling through the strings. Because with free strokes you tend to be able to do more (arpeggios and what not). I think this is why some players use ramp nails (nails that start small at the front and get bigger to the left).

His hand position actually reminds me of that of a lute player with gut strings, everything comes around doesn't it?!

"he would make a great flamenco player". Maybe but he does not. His choice is to deal with music that is way much advanced on the harmonic side. It's a musical point of view, not only "guitar", even if he is a absolute monster on guitar.

For the "Classic Yngwie Lick" at 1:58 it looks like he is using the 6 notes per beat pattern of: M I M A M I [ I = index, M = middle, and A = ring ] But his slow speed is still so damn fast, it's hard to be sure. This has his middle finger playing the downbeat. Am I right, or did anyone catch what he's doing there more precisely?

I think that's what I'm seeing as well, but it's hard to tell because the sync gets off a little when you slow down the video. It does point out that while he uses ami a lot, it's not always ami or amip as he seems to imply at one point in the video, it's more random.

As a classical player, I've heard a lot of people try this and Matteo has developed this technique better than most classical players. Matt Palmer is the only other player I can think of who plays AMI runs as even, fast, and clean.
