Sicialian guitarist Matteo Mancuso, who has been called 'the evolution of guitar' by Steve Vai and described as 'light years ahead' by Al Di Meola, gices his advice on soloing with more freedom, fluency, musicality and accuracy in this wide-ranging masterclass that's a must-watch for anyone who wants to play guitar solos that elevate the music they are a part of rather than just offer empty displays of dexterity. Covering phrasing, note selection, effective use of intervals and much more, the video also includes dazzling performances and demonstrations of key techniques by Matteo.

Can I just say how awesome it is that he comes off as the most approachable, almost normal, looking guy! As one of the premier guitarists in the world you might imagine him dressing and acting like a big ego rock star. But rather without the guitar, he looks like a regular kid who has come over for an early Sunday pasta at my Aunt Lizzie’s! He’s just unique and refreshing in this way!

Makes me think what caused him to use this technique when young, nobody told him to use pick, or he just refused? @@consulentecomunicazionestr3072 Being able to play many styles is truly difficult and commendable, and Matteo Mancuso is a master at this. What you might not understand is that Claudio Quartarone is a style in himself, and you either have it or you don't. It's something you're born with. I was referring to the technical aspect; it's really impossible to make a comparison on the musical level. Claudio Quartarone has already proven to be an absolute genius. I don't think Matteo has this originality, but in terms of instrumental skill on the guitar, his precision is unmatched, and his technique is definitely highly advanced.

Though I can appreciate this young man, the speed trap is truly addictive to some, but the beauty of slow melodic solos from the likes of David Gilmour, BBK etc truly move the soul. Speed moves the mind i.e. oh wow, thats fast. Give me five slow perfectly placed notes and my soul heals a little bit more. The old guys will get this.
@consulentecomunicazionestr3072
@consulentecomunicazionestr3072 Месяц назад
It's a old argument. You can play gold or shit. Nevermind the speed. It depends by music quality, not by speed. There is iper speed shit, and iper speed good music. There is shitty slow music, and there is golden slow music.

Absolutely fantastic advice!!!! I agree with him 1000%. On a guitar, because every "C" note looks DIFFERENT than every other "C" note (not like the piano, where they all look the same), it is a deep challenge to track Key signatures and modulations. As a result, guitarist will learn prepared "licks" (short phrases of notes) just like he said. The result is that a soloist will sound "stilted" and unnatural, and if you listen long enough, they'll repeat "licks". At that point, it's not improvisation, it's just regurgitating hunks of notes that may or may not sound good together. Also, YES: SING a solo...then learn what you just sang. Don't use these as Licks, just do it to get familiar with note flow on the fretboard. The goal is that at some point, you can just play what you wanted to sing!! And Lastly, YES; taking risks and making mistakes will produce a better solo than connecting licks. GREAT ADVICE, MATTEO!!!

It should be not overlooked the fact that his father is a guitar player for profession ...this to say that by "chewing" guitar playing since the beginning of his life Matteo's ears have got accustomed to melodies and arpeggios etc., even if not so interested into guitar playing in his early ages ...he said that he started playing at the age of 10 going after DeepPurple, Jimi Hendrix, Led Zeppelin etc., and only later on he moved into classic music, jazz and fusion ....Be it as it may he's today the best guitar player around and only listening to his explaining his approach to guitar playing (how he moves his right hand fingers etc.,) does reveal that he is a genuine guitar virtuoso. I think, "Just don't play if you don't have a definite idea", is a terrible idea. Or, "If you are not 100% sure of what you will play, just don't play." is insane advice. He's doing his best to tell you something profound. Many song writers and musicians stumble onto great phrases while piddling. My advice would be just the opposite. "Just pick it up and start playing"; "Playing is like a box of "chocklits", you never know what you're gonna get." Many of my arrangements show up when I'm just playing randomly, and I'll be like. "Yes! take it in that direction." Don't always be telling the guitar what to do. Sometimes it will show YOU a song. This is not an opinion unique to me.
@ciaranshaman
