"Matter of Heart" - The Classic Documentary on Carl Jung (Full)

"Matter Of Heart" is a compelling and inspiring film portrait of Carl Gustav Jung, a man whose extraordinary genius and humanity reached far beyond the sometimes exclusive realm of psychiatry into redefining the essential nature of who we are and what we hope to become. More than a linear biography, the film presents a fuller perspective on this analyst, healer, friend and mentor, through the skillful interweaving of rare home movies, valuable archival footage and a wealth of interviews with such notables as Sir Laurens van der Post, Marie-Louise von Franz and Joseph Henderson, M.D.
The life and thinking of the great Swiss psychiatrist, Carl Gustav Jung, is examined. Interviews are done with those who knew him, most of whom were analyzed by him and very often became analysts themselves. Jung's own words appear on screen, and archive footage of Jung himself is shown. We learn aspects of his private life, including his relationship with his wife, Emma, and his mistress, Toni Wolff. But mostly we learn of his philosophy, sometimes mystical in nature, regarding the collective unconscious, the ego-personality, anima and animus, and more (1985).

There are scholars like Noll who rightly criticize the cult of Jung, but project so much onto Jung. In this great docu, you get a very clear sense from his friends and Jung himself, he was very aware of this and handled it professionally and kindly. No one is perfect and I don’t know what that is anyway. He faced everything head on. Nothing would rattle the man but his own shadow and he deeply worked on integrating it. It is unfortunate that science is not yet more open to this type of knowing and learning. He was like a little baby splashing in the abyss. Amazing really. Such power and force of will and focus. Great humility I’m sure he earned. He was a true genius. I am guilty of transferring my projections of a father onto him. He is no messiah to me or father, more a rascal of consciousness. A pied piper. He is beautiful and authentic and wise. And he smells real. Intuitively I know what he experienced through my own journey in life. Thanks for this 🙏

Greatly written. And as was explored in the doc, he was so connected to the unconscious, that many couldn't help but have the transference occur as part of that which was attempting to reunite with itself...
@BigBunnyLove
@BigBunnyLove 3 года назад
@@risanaomi4958 I suppose he was as close as those folks that were close to him could get to the mystery of the source of consciousness. Of course a cult formed around him. The women seem so wise. The kind of mother I wish I would have had ;) They kept him in check I think and on the ground. It must have been a great battle of wills. I know they experienced many strange occurrences too. The weird points to an agency perhaps that Jung wrestled with. It is too easy to anthropomorphise what we don't understand. In the case of the unconscious it seems we are having to morph to be able to connect back to something we left behind I feel for better or worse. What we hide will rise up and come back again and again. For myself, this lead back to living responsibly in my own life and doing what I do as well as I can. I don't think anyone would have wanted the burden Jung bore, but he had the mind to do it.

The footage and the audio haven't aged well in this doc. But the fact that you can feel the age gives the impression that this footage was passed down generation by generation, from technology to technology, until it was uploaded to RU-vid. It's clearly complicated documentation, talking to multiple individuals, having original footage on Jung as well as editing of text and information, laid out in a chronology of sorts. Just thinking about the sacrifices that must have been made to preserve this footage alone, gives me a lot of hope. I feel like this footage is much like the plans to the death star in star wars in that it is a blueprint for our survival.

I don't think she's uncontious but more realistic. She's open minded to the possibility of God but also not going to the absolute extreme of "there definitely is/isn't a God, no if's, and's or but's", as some people are. The latter, in and of itself, can cause great problems among people, especially when it comes to the same God/God's with different interpretations of teachings.

There are moments in this obscure film where quotes from Jung are presented but there is no underscore. John Adams later gave his own score a drubbing saying his music had the quality of "stunning mediocrity". As far as I know this obscure documentary was John Adams only original scoring assignment. The music sounds very similar to his Shaker Loops, although this score is orchestrated for a larger ensemble than just a String Septet. His music was used for a few films incl "I am Love" directed by Luca Guadagnino. Adams music seemed completely wrong for this movie. I don't know what the Director was thinking of. I'm sure Adams must have been unhappy about usage of his pre-existing music in this way.

A rather interesting comment made early on about the solid reality of the psyche ("actually" living on the moon) distinct from and opposed to the object reality of the moon that revolves around Earth--a clear empirical error. This perspective, taken to its conclusion, has, for example, curiously led to today's perspective on gender; one claims to be of the other sex and--WALA--they therefore are! But---then there is the psychic reality, according to Jung, that this condition ("living" on the moon--- and now gender claims) is psychotic

But speaking from like the form of realism, 'i see it enormous and stretched across the world, thank God it's not all of it' perspective of it you get me? Seems this is what our current generations represent

@@hesxdeadxjimx I agree, also when you look back to Roman times right about when the empire was getting closer and closer and closer to its collapse it had a similar atmosphere we have here right now. So many events happening in such little time, we can give each month a theme now. WWIII, corona, etc. All those and sudden and super intense events stacking closer and closer together. Really the same thing w the Romans. Barely any interesting event ever like 300 years, then suddenly the time spans from event to event get shorter and shorter and shorter and eventually the empire comes crashing down.
