Matterhorn and Sacajawea: Summiting the two tallest Wallowa peaks

In this video I summit the two highest Wallowa mountains. The mountains are Matterhorn and Sacajawea. Starting from Wallowa Lake Trailhead, we went to Ice Lake and setup camp. Then I summited the two mountains the next day. The mountains were not very technical, only a few times I had to crawl. We spent 3 nights at Ice Lake and that was very peaceful. A ranger came by and had a few people move their tents away from the lake. After this trip we headed to the town of Joseph for a few nights. We enjoyed Terminal Gravity Brewing, the Wallowa Lake Tramway, and a few others.
Here is the uncut footage from this trip if interested:

Wow, spectacular! Definitely beyond what I'm usually willing to hike...especially that narrow ridgeline between the two peaks...I felt nervous just watching the video! Nice work as always, a thoroughly engaging adventure in some mind-blowing scenery.

Definitely loved sumiting the Cascade peaks of Hood, St. Helens, Adams, Jefferson and South Sister. Had to escape to Idaho because it is way to Communist there and no way in hell do I want my kids growing up in that environment. Now, closer to the Blue Mountains, Elkhorn Range, Strawberry Range and Wallowas. I do hope Eastern Oregon merges with Idaho though. Plenty of awesome mountain ranges in Idaho to add to.

Awesome video, thank you! I am preparing summer trips to Razberry, Sacajewa, Matterhorn, Aneroid, Dollar Lake peak, Pet's Point, Eagle and Glacier peaks. Having a clear vision of the route on a solo trip is immensely comforting, so again thank you for these two peaks (lots of outdoor enthusiasts film themselves far too much and seem to neglect the technical aspect) I can start dreaming now. This will be my first time in this area, so many mountains in WA... Subscribed!

Awesome to hear, thanks. That is funny to hear about people filming themselves, cause that was a motivation for me. I would search youtube for a certain mountain to research, then find some doofus filming their face the whole video haha. Hope it works out. Seems like travel is frowned upon with recent events. @MattCookOregon
@MattCookOregon 4 года назад
Thanks a bunch man. I only watch smaller channels. The large ones just feel like a big commercial usually. Mountain was a little sketchy but I have had a crazy climbing year so lots of confidence there. Yep the super zoom shots really added something. Having some diversity with your camera work really does a lot. Drones in wilderness are illegal and I follow the rules pretty closely.
@Hangs4Fun
@Hangs4Fun 4 года назад
@@MattCookOregon yeah, those shots were all from 2018 and the last times I got to get drone shots :-( Plus the portion I did the drone work was in National Forest, I was right on the border between the National Forest and the Wilderness area. But that was then. I dont even mess with drones on backpacking trips any more. Crap, I have over 50 videos like that already produced from 2018 and some in 2019. I spend way too much time editing, lol. But I guess being on lock down I can kick some out. Any way love your channel, have a great day and be safe out there

Oh my gosh! It is so beautiful up there!!! Though if I could make a suggestion regarding filming techniques. I might play with using a higher frame rate for sections where you are doing a lot of the climbing and anything else where your view point is moving quickly. Even if it means using a lower resolution, the trade off in temporal resolution will more than likely make up for it.
@MattCookOregon
@MattCookOregon 5 лет назад
Thanks dude. I am all about higher fps. Longer and more intense trips like this I had to go with 30fps to conserve battery life.

Very well filmed. Nice point of you perspective and great climbing. Quick question... I was curious why you carry your ice ax on the rock. Is it as a walking stick, or to self arrest on the rock, or is it easier just to keep out between transitions between rock and snow? Just curious the reasoning or benefit. Thanks!
@MattCookOregon
@MattCookOregon 5 лет назад
Thanks! Good question. Dry climbs like this could definitely go without it. This was a new climb for me so I didn't have perfect information to prepare. I brought the axe for potential snow climbing. I ended up using it as a balance tool mostly. It also is a good braking tool for glissading, which came in handy on the way back. I brought the axe on my next climb to North Sister and didn't need it there either, better safe than sorry.

Hey Matt, new viewer here, what was the date of this trip, I.e. mid July, late June? I’m trying to go this summer and gauging snow beta has proven tricky.
@MattCookOregon
@MattCookOregon 2 года назад
This was July 9th 2019. That is a variable time of snow levels there. Though I would guess it will be about the same since it has been a dry year. Mosquitos also pretty bad but that is manageable with gear. If August/September are options I would go then.

Hey I really appreciate that you are enjoying the Oregon archives! This was late July. The lack of snow was a bit unusual for July. I always say September is best time to avoid snow/bugs. Mosquitoes were prob a little less than Cascades. I had a fresh coat of permethrin on my clothes so no complaints. Anyways keep in touch I appreciate the comments.
