Terrific discussion! We paint ourselves into corners when we continue to use 17th century and later antiquated terminology out of sheer habit without giving the nomenclature any critical thought.

Another interesting episode, especially the part about why mammals may have been able to become dominant. Fascinating, thanks!

Thank for this video! I've always been fascinated by ' shrooms and this is brain candy! Fungi were on the planet way before hominids and the idea of them "wanting" to be cold means adaptation to other climatological conditions besides the present ones. This spins me around to the fungal form that was "found" in post atom bomb Japan's soil, that the modern medication, "Ivermectin", was isolated from. ( I'm also an appreciator of A Heinlein. )As a teen in the 1960's I loved having permission to think outside the box! Your passionate interest is helping fill in many gaps in modern scientific thinking.

The fungal filter really needs to be explained in the light of the fact that most Dinosaurs were considered endotherms. The avian dinosaurs still alive today have a 1.5 degree higher bodytemperature than the average mammal. It is more likely, that the preexisting conditions that lead to the rise of dinosaurs at the end of the triassic were not present at the end of the cretaceous, e.g. lower oxygen levels, which would favour the avian pulmonary system. Up to that point dinosaurs were not "superior" but our mammalian predecessors were more plenty.
