Whatever distance he runs won’t matter until he controls his tendency to throw his form out the window. His running form is excellent when he sticks with it. He appears to have a strong core, but he tenses/strains instead of relaxing and trusting his form down the stretch, wasting energy and slowing him down. If he fixes that he’ll be very good in the 400m.
He only strains when he starts to lose. He is looking for another gear that isn't there...he is getting better every year though and he should eventually get to the point where he won't have to worry about the others runners because he'll be in front of him.
@@micdeleon I agree, he does it in tight races. He’ll need to overcome it quickly as his college career is going to end and all the competition at the next level will be faster than the average college athlete. He will be in the situation where he strains now and then today, but in every race then.
Spot on analysis TRP! I think Boling could nail 43.99 at some point, if he specialized now. But tbh, look at Long Jump as well! ... 8.25m PR is enough to medal in most Diamond Leagues atm and might even get Bronze at Worlds/Olympics. He could be the first 400m / Long Jump combo.
People forget he was a 400 specialist in high school. He went with the 100 senior year cause he wanted to and realized he was fast as hell (by high school standards). Don’t forget the unforgettable anchor leg he pulled to comeback and win state that year.
@@aodoemela he really should. I think it’s his biggest mistakes not focusing it all of college. If he spent the last 3/4 years on it he could be one of the best in the world.
@@graysondowell9547 Yeah. Hes definitely not making the USA 100 team. He may at some point be able to sneak onto the 200 team. But I can't see him beating Fred, Lyles, Knighton, Bednarek, Coleman etc.
Even without Laird & Fahnbulleh, the 200m isn't going to be a cakewalk for Boling this year! Looking like Tarsis Orogot, Cameron Miller & Javonte Harding aren't going to roll over & make it easy! Christopher Bailey & The University of Arkansas are going to be a problem in the 400m & 4x4 this year!
3:08 - Total Running Productions - look at Karsten Warholm's indoor 400 meter run from February 2023. If I remember correctly, he ran an opening 200 meters in a time of 20.9. I was shocked but reminded myself that he is one of the most unbelievable talents in the Track and Field World - so I guess it's expected that anything like that can happen at anytime.
Considering that Boling hit his peak way too soon the last 2 seasons, I am not surprised that he has run slower indoor times this year. I have no inside info if it's because his coach has adjusted his training schedule, but it's definitely a possibility, and I'm just fine if he doesn't make splashes in the Indoor season. I'd rather see it come in the spring. Yes, he might be a good 400m runner if he were to focus on it, but he's not dropping the 200m any time soon and 400 training will help his 200 later on. Why are we not talking about this? I'm a former collegiate track and field sprinter. Not even close to his level, but I know a thing or 2 about sprinting and training, and I gotta think it's at least a possibility.
I agree that he is easing into the outdoor season. Fanbullah would do this too. Barely run during indoor’s and turn it up outdoors. Harding is also a great talent but no one is saying he’s done bc he ran 20.50.
He has world class speed but not quite Olympic-level world class speed. What he has is monster core and upper body strength and overall athleticism. He'd actually probably make a great decathlete. The 400 is probably his best shot to make the Olympics but even there, I'm not entirely sure he's quite TOP top tier. He may end up coming just short, which is absolutely NO knock on him. He's a rare athlete. It's just that the top times for 100, 200 and 400 are so mind-blowing that it's monumentally difficult for ANYONE to break in. Imagine him as a wide receiver/return specialist in the NFL, though. He'd carve defenses up.
@user-fq2rg1hh5x That’s subjective. I’d agree with you on the 100 being more prestigious than the 400. But in the US, our 4x400 relays have been so dominant that for Team USA that event is arguably the most prestigious. Also most collegiate track coaches see the 4x400 as the most important single race in terms of overall team performance since they can draw from athletes from the 100, 200, 400, and 800. Either way, relays are exciting and obvious crowd favorites which is why, for example, the Penn Relays are such an important event.
Elijah Godwin made that team, got a gold medal and I think Boling is capable of running at least as fast in the 400m as Godwin. That hasn't officially happened yet but I think it's very possible.
@@Brave-828 what do you mean for three years? He broke both of his PBs last year and you can see how he peaked with speed work for indoors and ran like shit outdoors
@@nikitamartynov02 I don't think the other commenter is comparing boling to himself. He's comparing him to other runners. It's possible to continuously get better but still be behind others. I still believe his time is coming, it's just a matter of when and which event.
I completely agree with your statements here! Also, what I’m seeing in Boling, is, he’s achieving all these fast times running extremely tense. If he can learn to relax and clean out the sloppy parts of his mechanics, there is no telling how fast his times will be. Many don’t realize these 400M specialists are often very fast in the 100M and 200M, but, not champions. As Matt begins to approach the pros, he’s gonna need to learn the way of the Professional Athletes, which is, to focus on the event(s) at which they have a chance of winning! If he focuses more on the 400M now, it can get him up there, as well as build more strength for the 100/200M later in his career.
People are so quick to assume. Every season is different, and you never know what the athlete is going through. He’s still a top contender in the 200 and a good 400m runner
@@efisgpr Right. Really he could potentially compete in 100 200 or 400 plus long jump. Its odd he hasn't improved more in the 100 and 200 though. might need a new coach.
Would like to see you cover Texas A&M’s Auhmad Robinson. He ran a 45.6 in the indoor 400m last week. He was the dude that placed SFA 2nd in the NCAA Outdoors 4x4 behind NCA&T with a 43.45 split in 2021 The way this kid runs, he gets out fast its like he keeps picking up speed even on the home straight.
The 400 may also slow him down enough that his form improves. If he can stay strong and finish, which he is proving he can, this could resolve some of his issues that have plagued him in the 200. Especially on tight turns. He will need an overall improvement to stay competitive in the US, but he has room to improve and it will be exciting to watch.
Multiple guys ran sub 21 for their first lap in the 2021 NCAA indoor 400, even in the prelims, they often fall apart afterwards but Noah Williams ran 20.90 maybe 21 flat in the final and went 44.70.
Yared Neguse sets an American record and barely misses the world indoor record....crickets. Boling underperforms in the 200 but runs a good opening leg....lights shine from above.
As a Canadian who is also amazed at Boling's Progress it seems apparent that the USA might have a FUTURE "Wayde van Niekirk that can perform well in the LONG JUMP too!" I'm curious what he can do in the 300, 500 and 600 meter distances too!
🤣🤣🤣 Boling is still in college, getting beat by 19yr olds, in the 200. Hasn't made a single senior team usa team, Has zero chance of making the 100 and 200.. OUtside chance of at least competing for the 400.. If he turned pro he'd have to fact ALL those Black athletes he couldn't displace on team usa.. along with all the best on earth... Dude can't beat above average college 19yr olds.. But he's van niekerk🤣🤣
@@lilcourtny08 I've been watching Knighton too, he can dominate the 200 meters if he can repeat 19.4x reliably. Since 19.1 is possible with a great star and a good tailwind (dropping his time by 0.3) he could be the guy that breaks BOLT's record. Yohan Blake actually ran under 19 seconds but his start time / reaction time of 0.269 seconds was a horridly SLOW START cost him the 200m record as even 1/10th faster would have been 19.16 TOTAL TIME (Bolt's Recoord is 19.19 of course). Boling might never break 19.5 200m because he is 100% WHITE like me! Haha!
He’s insane, seen him run at many of the same meet. He would of broken state 400 record if hadn’t tweaked his hamstring before. Really unique runner too because he has extremely good acceleration (5th fastest hs 60m) and really good strength for the 400m but his top end speed is weaker so his 100 and 200 are comparatively worse.
I agree.High schooler, received the baton from close to a stand still momentum position, was more than fifteen meters behind a fast running an opposing anchor, and he ran that last high school race split in under 45 secs(44.7~).It was guts, speed, focus, desire, everything rolled into one.
Laird pulled out of the 60m last minute. Personally, I don’t see him do well there seeing as he’s a 200m specialist. You also know that he was out for close to two years due to injury? And if you still wanna compare Laird to Matt; Laird walked him down time after time in 2021 outdoors season. Matt only beat(barely) Laird once in the indoors
@@Brave-828 I don't want to compare them, I want them to compete. I like the competition of the best against the best. Like Bromell v Lyles not dodging each other, and both wanting that match-up. Track & field is just abundant with talent now at all levels, and the competition will draw an audience.
Awesome analysis. I have been wondering why he hasn’t tried the 400m and/or the long jump. He is so versatile that he can do almost anything. Reminds me of Abbi Steiner.
Boling never needs to totally give up an any of the sprints on the oval... However,up to when he gets to the big show meets in order to really throw down his best products against the other super runners he should only spot compete in key events, using them as fitness and readiness checks for what I've been saying his strange double should be against the best:the 400/LJ and maybe in time the 200 as well. These days against so many unbelievably talented short sprinters from 60m-200m even to the 400m in the USA it's incredibly difficult to make a team(interestingly enough Godwin did it specializing in the 400m and got a relay gold medal being purposed that way).In Lewis' hayday if you were 9.97 or below or 19.85(100/200) you might've been able to keep the same Sprinter/LJ big meet spectrum of events attempted much wider. What's increased so much from that day to this is the sheer volume of blazing fast runners in each of the different oval sprint distances and disciplines. While still a collegiate Boling won't be able to function this way until he leaves UGA.Then will come the time he trains and spot races and jumps for about 8-9 months to prepare for about 2-3 months intense competition
Christopher Bailey from Arkansas ran 45.09 this season in the open 400. Are we really talking about relay splits? TRP must be sponsoring Matt Boling. This is crazy
7:24 didn’t Matthew boling literally only train like a 400 runner in high school and dropped down to short sprints and performed great there? Seemed like he trains up and just jumps down he does fine.
Interesting that the 200-400 combo hasn't been seen much since the Michael Johnson & Marie-José Pérec era... yet now both Matthew Boling and Abby Steiner are both contenders at those distances. T.B.C.
Bowling is not comparable to Steiner. One has Olympic medals and a 5th place finish individually, the other is pushing top 10 in his own nation. They are not the same
*If Matt would have went to Texas A&M or Texas to focus on 400m and 4x4 races, he would be worlds and Olympic ready!* On top, of all that he could have been great on LJ too, he did good on 4x4 but I want to see him run 400m open.
'splits" and projection.....I wish him the best but there wasn't really that much separation between the runners at the hand off....and, the order of that first hand off was lanes 6,5,4,3.
Laird: 19.81 with +0.8 wind at age 22 Boling: 19.92 into -0.9 HEADWIND.... at age 21 Broke 10 seconds younger than Laird, Bednarek or Kerley too. Kerley's best 200 after the season he turned 21: 20.61. The next season: 20.24. Sure, he was focused on the 4, but he ran 2's too. It will be interesting to see if Boling has a solid outdoor season or not. If he can do a couple 19.8's and 9.9x's then Caryl is doing a good job managing his year.
You can pull out all those nonentity stats, Matt’s talent level can’t hold up to at least five current 200m US runners. He does have a fighting chance at the 400m though. Speaking of Laird who Matt fans are still obsessing over; he ran lower 9:80s in the 100m and lower 19.80s in the 200m at 22. If he is back to health this outdoor season, we’re looking at lower 19.70s. So dream on, baby girl.
Dude you need to look at Justin Braun high school performance and showcase the kid. He won every sprint final in Ohio as an underclassmen. Would have set the state record on 400m if he didn’t pull out for quad.
@@joshhughart289 No, the only way he is going to get faster is a program of downhill running. He doesn't do that so his upside is limited. Flat training at this level has a point of no return.
Completely agree! I’ve been wondering since his HS days when he was going to stick with the 400. He’s got the speed to be top 3 in the US in the 400, but not quite for the 200. IMHO
@@ThaSpeedsterZ Must not be familiar with the state of the US 400meters the past 10-12yrs IE we have become progressively less dominant over the last 3 Olympics in a sport we use to dominate and often swept. The up and comers are suspect. Your reaction speaks volumes of what you apparently should look into with what his times in the 200 and splits in the 400 could mean for a potential professional future in the 400, more so than for shorter sprints, especially with the decline the US has seen in talent in the 400meters.
He's a jack of all these events but no master of any of them. Hopefully he still had the same coach and they'll have loads more improvement this outdoor season
Saying that Boling has never trained exclusively for the 400 is simply incorrect. During his sophomore and junior years of high school, the 400 was his main track event and he was very good at it, running under 47 his sophomore year and 46-low his junior year. It wasn't until his senior year that he began running the 100. But otherwise, I agree with you that the 400 could end up being his best track event, certainly a better fit for him than the 100.
Powerful runner! On the thumbnail you can still notice that his face, neck and shoulders look strained. Some more relaxation training and great things will happen for certain.
@@littlebobbystrong4143 Or... check this out.. Maybe he was never good enough. Maybe it's ok hes not. Maybe being a very good college athlete should be ok. He hasn't gotten better in three years of college. His old man is rich as hell and gets him top trainers.. Instead, he's gotten worse. It's not the worst thing on earth to be average
I've been watching him and his biggest problem is his straining. He doesn't yet know how to relax and spring at the same time. I know cause for 6 years, I ran the 200/400 and I had the same problem in the 200. When I ran the 400, for some reason my 200m split was the same as my open 200m. It's cause for 6 years, I strained so hard in the 200 and when I ran the 400, I ran very relaxed and that resulted in me running as fast as I can for the first 200m. If he ever can learn to relax and spring, he will be a dominant force in the open 200m. But I do think he'll end up in the 400m.
Hey Matt. Don't let anyone take you down. Call u buddy abbey. Don't quit. Ur that guy when I was a kid. Rock there world. I love you brother. Find ur shit. Long jump and 400. Make em eat it. Ur a stud. Makem eat it. F em. I love u brother
Well, all you Matt 400 guys are having your day now . . 45.19 is impressive. I think he could do any of the events; in that sense he's confusing . . Remains to be seen which specialty he will excel in. Btw, more sprinters are trying their luck all over the place, eg Fred Kerley and Abby. I think it's fair to say, though, that the early drive phase is Matt's weakness so far. He's also had some weak finishes--not here of course. Back in ye olde days, you could see a runner switch around at the highest level, but starting in the 1960s, specialization became the norm.
5:04 if your educated in track and field. It makes 100% sense it’s weird how much talking there is for this. He ran 44.74 a while ago on a running split. If the same effort is given it’s about a 45.1 lead off leg. Which is what he just did. So he’s the same level as he was in high school. 0 Improvement. Now as far 100,200 long jump, he’s improved greatly.
I said many many months ago that he would excel in the 400 and that his range is unlike any other athlete we’ve ever seen. His combination of strength and speed is incomparable (cue the haters🙄) and he ran the 400 in HS. It was by ‘happenstance’ that he ran -and went viral in-the 100.
Why waste all your obvious track acumen as a comment here? Start doing videos on your channel and I will be your first subscriber! Sick of the channels that use meaningless attention seeking terms like insane, ridiculous, savage.
“His combination of strength and speed is incomparable” lol and where would that leave Kerley and Norman? Lyles too who chose to not run the 400m because the pay is low.
@@Brave-828 I’m not just talking about on the track since ‘field’ is part of track and field.🙄. Actually, Lyles is the only one out of the 3 who you mentioned that might compare as far as range of athleticism goes given that he has a background in high jump although not as elite as Boling is in the long jump.
A lot of people in this comment section downplaying the rest of the field for the 400 while simultaneously thinking boling should easily move up The amount of ignorance is astounding
I've said it before and I'll say it again, I think he should strongly consider the Decathlon?? We know he can run fast in the 100m and 400m, he definitely can Kill it in the long jump and has a solid High Jump.... if you train him in Pole Vault and the throwing events... Idk man, seems like a great possibility to me. I just don't know if he will ever crack a US squad in the events he runs now?? Maybe I'm wrong...
For the time being he could run the qualifying races until he starts replacing one of the four that are there now. That would give him competitive experience, and not make the starters antsy.
Boling and his coach have finally realized that the 200 is Knighton, Bendarek and American record holder Noah Lyles is on another level. Laird can't keep up with these guys either. AftercAll the hype. So, they have come up with him running 400 instead. He's getting hyped again. Hasn't won or placed top 2 or 3 against world class competition yet Chill
He is a very, very good college sprinter, but hasn’t really put up times that suggest he’s going to be a future world contender in the 100 and 200. I think he might actually be a 400 runner. Decathlon would be interesting as well.
19.92 against a 0.9 m/s headwind at 21yo. Converts to like a 19.69 in favorable conditions. At just 20, in his first year of college comp, got to #6 on the all-time list of the indoor 200. And no one above him did it younger, except Wallace Spearmon..by a month. Sub-10 younger than all but 21 men ever. ...even after graduating at nearly 19 and then missing a year of college comp due to COVID. But yeah he could blow up the decathlon. He high jumped 6'5" at 16.
@@efisgpr Yeah, he's really good. I don't suggest otherwise. He could do OK as a pro. Still don't see him breaking on to the US Olympic team, let alone contending for a championship podium, in the 100 or 200. The field is so deep.
