I know writers who use subtext. They're all cowards.

What's funny is that I was thinking of the people involved with Darkplace, wishing I could do something like it, thinking to myself, "Unlike me, those are all dedicated people. I'll never be that driven." And now I hear Matt Holness saying that these characters are wish fulfillment because he's not dedicated enough. I guess the moral is just "get off the internet and do things."

It's a certain empathy that I feel would make the character much less funny if it weren't there. Yes, Garth Marenghi is a hack with a huge head, but he's a DRIVEN hack. Who else can claim that they've written more books than they've read, whether or not that's a good thing? Confidence, even misplaced confidence, is attractive.

It's very difficult now not to reference Holness when dealing with 70s / 80s pulp... 'Night of the Crabs, that's just so Garth'...

It's actually refreshing to see he doesn't utterly disdain his characters. Modern American satire could learn from this, it's literally a mean girls clique doing straw man again and again with no depth or subtext to be found.

It is ironic though.

Pompous? Maybe. Subtext? Nah, that’s for cowards.
