Matthew McConaughey discussed his Oscar-winning role in "Dallas Buyers Club," as well as his career and approach to acting, as part of our Free Talks series at the Film Society of Lincoln Center. filmlinc.com/fr...
I think there's one way and one way only (screenwriter not an actor). And that is to love that character as much as possible before the "action" ... Everything else will fall in line in accordance with your talent.
hpstewart2 no, they are nothing like normal people. they are weirdos who do not have a real identity, actors act like other people, its dilusional in every sense.
@@KimsLantern aside from a one-season arc in a show like 'true detective', shot like a movie from start to finish, the dude's a movie star. There's a big, big difference in how he markets himself. He'd never do a straight-up tv show. That's one of the things that still distinguishes natural movie stars from tv stars. MM is a movie star, and he's right to keep his brand for as long as he can.
There's no certainty. What I know you can do, though, is try. If you really want to be a famous actor and that's really what you want and that's all you really want, then at least try. Come back to this comment section one day and tell me you did it. I'm slowly realising that I'm not enjoying college so I have to make it in music, otherwise I'll be miserable and stuck my whole life. @@captainmacmillan735
Just graduated college and I’m pursuing my love for acting, generally not doing it for fame or money just the love and passion videos like this inspire me maybe I’m not crazy for going after this never know
As a talent agent and a huge fan of Matthew I just adore this piece. Thank you for sharing and thank you Matthew McConaughey. I know I am no where near as amazing as a performer but I put everything into what I do as an agent for my performers and artists. I put my heart and soul into booking my clients and I live to find people like Matthew. Someone who is obsessed with the craft and always thankful to work and grow. I love watching this every few months. Thank you all again.
Hey there Daniel, I have a short film I created titled “The Apple of Deadpool’s Eye” it’s centered around Deadpool’s undying love for Spider-Man and how he wishes he would respond to the many letters he’s sent him. I think it might interest you. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-b7G5hhkLXGM.html
It’s crazy that so many professional actors literally fell into being one. I personally have trained for a huge portion of my life here in London to become an actor and will hopefully next year be going to one of the best acting schools in the world where I will have to put in 55 hour weeks for 4 years to develop my craft to the point where I can call myself an “actor” and even then I probably will spend my whole life never even appearing in a film as big as the ones this guy stars in. Funny how life works huh.
SO TRUE! The video starts with him saying, " I went to the RIGHT bar and met the RIGHT guy". It's all about RIGHT place, RIGHT time, RIGHT opportunity. It's important for all 3 to add up and so many actors never get that chance. Keep pushing on and make sure your life is full outside of acting. Praying that one day all 3 add up for you!
Right place, right time, right look, right attitude...lots of luck, especially after you fall. Most people don't get back up after that. The vast majority of highly successful actors that I have known over the years did not spend much time in the trenches. They had something special about them that was obvious to everyone. Matthew is one of them. He's extraordinarily talented, compelling personally, easy-going and the kind of person who connects with people in a way that's always memorable. School doesn't teach those things. Having said all of this, most people aren't all Internet billionaires, either. And many attended Stanford.
Basically, be prepared but be ready to change and adapt at the moment. If you're scared to improv or when they change your lines last minute, then you haven't studied the character enough.
I always liked him. Yeah he’s done those silly comedies, but he’s really good at them. Yet some of his greatest work were the dramas where he doesn’t get nearly as much credit. Films like A Time To Kill, Contact, Dallas Buyers Club, the Paperboy, the Lincoln Lawyer.
It's never too late. Start reading acting books - Larry Moss' Intent to Live, Declan Donolan's Actor and the Target, Stanislavski's Toolkit, etc. And take acting classes as well. Never too late to start :)
Harrison Ford was working on George Lucas’ roof at 30 before being asked to play Han Solo and later create the Indians Jones series. Universal timing cooperates with the strength of your desire.
I really wish they would talk about the nepotism and many things out of the control of the artist in terms of "making it." Some of you out there (including this writer and vlogger) have the artist aspiration. You have been told by the very few who made it to believe in yourself and never give up. Well the simply fact is the arts are very different than any other profession. Because usually--someone else has to let you in. Now what I would tell you if you are 18 or 40 and feel that your destiny is in the arts? I would not tell you to just stay the "safe route" and give up on your dreams. I would tell you to pursue the artist aspiration smartly. Get another trade that you at least like. So the agents of industry never have you by the throat. You have to go to work anyway so you might as well have the job that pays well. I never went through the starving artist phase. I went through a starving student phase. So when I finally did pursue the artist endeavor I did it with a job I also like that contracts for 100K a year and four month vacations in Europe. That's how you go through being a starving artist. You don't starve at all. Hope this helps someone---Charles
That’s what I’m doing. I’m working on becoming a real estate agent for now until I catch a break. I’m a new actor and trying to figure it out. It seems as though you have to know someone or someone catches you at the right place at the right time. I guest that explains why many singers and some actors today aren’t very good or are successful when so many students and new graduates surpass them. If you don’t know someone or get “lucky” good luck. I was scouted a week ago by a guy who knows bigger guys so let’s see what happens.
usually we tend to forget details from the past as the years go by. but actors, ooph, those are different creatures. Every year the same story gets more and more detailed.
Being an actor is something i really want to do but i have a lot of social anxiety. I feel judged a lot and i’m not too confident. I feel like i’m wasting time by not putting myself out there, i’m just really scared.
It is definitely something you can do if you really want it....having social anxiety shouldn’t stop you from pursuing your dreams....Wish you good luck!
This where I am at where I am getting caught up in studying and worry about the lines which causes my performances to be stiff. Once I let go and as he put it "throw out the lines the day of" it works for me. So on point.
Yesterday I saw Matthew starring in a super lame car commercial that extolled the virtues of wanton materialism. Maybe Matt can give a talk on "How to Sell Out and Cash in Big Time" next week...
I always was pretty even very young. Early l knew I didn't like too much attention. I think it was because my mother would say : pretty is as pretty does.
I made friends or at least acquaintances with a very intelligent filmmaker who has directed some of my very favorite (Dafoe, Hoffman) actors of all time and eternity mf. I needed to check myself in my approach BUT I also called him out for ignoring the Weinstein company he worked for. So - old news I guess but that cult out there is for cowards. Would love to act. But it's full of losers. Sir Matthew M is one of my favorite actors. How do you know when it's just about money?
Yeah. Don’t f$&@ing procrastinate. 🤣🤣 Learn your lines. I miss being in plays. Also wanted to be an actor my entire life... I got distracted, unfortunately. :/
