In life, what is it that pushes us to discover our true self-identities? Who are we truly and how can we begin to know ourselves on the deepest level possible so that we can push through life’s greatest failures and relish in life’s greatest successes? By chasing fear, taking on challenges, and learning to live in discomfort, we can uncover who it is we truly are. On this episode of Impact Theory, Academy Award-winning actor Matthew McConaughey joins Tom Bilyeu to discuss such matters and more as they explore the stories and lessons Matthew has accumulated throughout his life that defines his drive, purpose, and his true self-identity. They discuss the lessons in Matthew’s new book ‘Greenlights,’ why you need to discover your true self, how needing puts you in a position to not be yourself, how to truly develop confidence, why resistance in life reveals who we truly are, why reinventing yourself through life is key to growth, how chasing fear keeps your drive alive, and what values are important to leading a life of freedom.

The part of depression that they don’t talk about is how memories turn negative when we review them. Sometimes it feels like I have more negative or uncomfortable memories than I really do...this is why it’s important to journal joyous moments, moments when you performed well, when you were confident, when you were loved and when you proved capable of loving others unconditionally. If you get stuck in bad memories, or start feeling bad about yourself, who you are, or what level of success you have, you then can go to your journal to remember, it’s not all bad. You are the one you’ve been waiting for ♥️

A large part of my life has been spent trying to escape myself and become a totally different person with hopes of being as successful that dude or as confident and charismatic like so and so. I was just rarely comfortable in my own skin. Moving, traveling, turning one new leaf after another, rebirth, enlightenment, etc. I was constantly in flux shedding my skin as I attempted to escape and replace myself with a different better self that never seemed to materialize no matter how hard I tried. But lately, I've just been content being whomever I may be at the moment regardless of state I may be in. I'm still constantly trying to improve myself, but I'm also learning to appreciate who I am in the moment without anxiously searching and waiting for that elusive future better self to replace me.

The most important and hardest journey is the journey within. It is an awakening. It is painful even. But when we accept ourselves unconditionally, forgive ourselves for our mistakes and for being human, let go of negative self-talk and a whole lot of things that it takes to find ourselves, and ultimately love ourselves, it is so worth it. So, keep going.

I love that Matthew McConaughey is such an in-depth, introspective human being. He gives us all a fine example of how we each should really live life: willingness to be real, to look in the mirror, to engage in introspection and self-awareness, which not only benefits and GROWS our own true self, but also benefits and sets an example to others for approaching life and living fully. I love this interview, as well as another one I listened to. I recently bought the Greenlights book for myself. While I haven't finished it yet, I find I have to read it in bits, in digestible chunks, because at times it triggers me; other times, it gives me some priceless nuggets of depth and wisdom that I just need to ponder over for awhile before moving forward. I'm so looking forward to, after listening to him speak, reading through the rest of it. I'm at a place of expansion in my life right now where this book is indeed a timely, much needed tool in my own renaissance-- or, as Matthew calls it, "McConnaisance", haha.... I appreciate McConaughey's honest, open, and deep insights to living life, through his sharing his own insights.

The being forced to do interviews like this during corona is actually a huge positive I think! Usually, when you (Tom) do Impact Theory there's all the cameras and angles and shots that make you and the interviewee look "perfect". But like this, seeing people in a normal room, without lighting effects and whatever gives it something real and I really do love that! I mean, that's what impact theory is ultimately about, right? To give people something real. And this makes it so much more relatable. Seeing these celebrities sitting in their homes just like me, that's real. That's a reminder that we are all in the same boat. We are all in this together. Not only with corona but with life. Thanks Tom for keeping up this incredible work! I might not be able to give you personally something back but I think that's okay, because I can do my best and pay it forward. And the people I hopefully touch can do the same. :)

I am incredibly appreciative for Impact Theory and the high caliber, high frequency content made accessible to me. I’ve read so many books that have been suggested here. Mindset by Carol Dweck and others have lit me up. This interview and wisdom shared is timely. Getting Green Light ASAP! Thank you for sharing.

Matthew I have enjoyed you through the years. I have been shy natured most of my younger years. When I had watched your confidences in your movies, I started to make myself more confident. As I really had no example to follow realistically. So, thank you for giving that confidence to me by helping or showing me what I could do if I reacted to your behavior. So, that was how I basically learned how to take or make a pattern to follow and live. Congratulations you are one of several abmirable persons I have learned from to build my life.

Tom Bilyeu, you are the best interviewer in today’s world... I love how your intuitive nature and how your ability to understand and see beyond the words to a deeper understanding or message pique the interest and seem to push your guests beyond what they seem to expect. Thank you! Love McConahey already but you brought out excitement and inquiry within himself I have not seen him respond this way in any other interview. Good job!

Another fantastic out of the box, but right to the heartbeat of the life of inspiration. Thanks Tom for bringing these conversations to our awareness. The walkabout concept is right on. Bringing Matthew’s work and life and process to my awareness is so helpful to me in understanding my own journey . Absolutely I learn so much, and I appreciate your impact on my journey to learn and share. This might have been the coolest most relevant most incredible nugget for CovID and post covid times as well.

Tom, thank you for using in-video-ads that you do yourself, rather than tons of ads from youtube. I actually enjoy listening to your recommendations because I know they're coming from you - someone who I enjoy learning from, and someone who has a similar attitude towards life. The tea ad in this one sounds dope. Maybe I'll try it at some point. The zenergy idea is neat haha. So thanks for doing the advertising yourself. Makes experiencing your videos a lot more enjoyable.

You know what I want to hear from you Tom, How to listen so keenly and to formulate such thought-provoking questions! I'm often surprised that you have been exposed to so much similar content yet you rarely jump in but rather just provide a stage for your speakers. Your comments at best only accents the message of your speakers. It's impressive how long you're able to stay engaged in this way.

Tom knows how to extract pearls of wisdom from his guests. This interview looks nothing like any other interview with McConaughey. What I found reall valuable were the lessons about not being needy, instead being involved and not giving a damn about how I come across. Another great lesson was about staying with yourself until you feel comfortable in your skin, forgive some and say enough to some of the things in your life.
