I'm 52 now so my teens and early twenties were all in the eighties and it was a much happier and simpler time, always get a sense of melancholy for a lost time on hearing music from this era. I know partly it's seeing the past through rose tinted glasses as it certainly wasn't all good but simpler and happier for me certainly.
Who's listening in 2023? This is one of the few songs that I do NOT remember; I'm sure I heard it before since I was very aware of music in 1983, but I don't immediately recall it. Having said that, I like it - it fits the vibe and I'm glad to have (re)discovered it.
This song is more than awesome. As an American having lived in Germany for over 42 years I still feel very much "American" when I listen to this song. 👍🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
I thought "Break My Stride" was okay, but I LOVED this one and thought it was much better! A much overlooked classic! I love the power and positive energy! I had a the 45 and was a 13 year old 7th grader at the time. I know Matthew went on to a huge career as a producer, but I wish he'd make some more solo albums!
Holy cow. I'd forgotten, about this song, but I actually remember it being on the radio for about a week! Man, there is so much 80's in this video it is almost painful, but in a good way!
A fine follow-up to the bouncy "Break My Stride," this hit number 33 in 1984. "Break My Stride," peaked at number 5 I think. Very nice stuff from this multi-talented gent who has written and produced songs for a number of huge stars, lent his singing voice as Ling in Disney's "Mulan" and was also nominated for Best Original Score at that year's Oscars.
Bravo bravo bravo bravo bravo for my five menbers of my family... Gracias thanks grazzie.. You are a totem for me in your music art... Gracias bravo .. Your music is the soundtrack ours life.... Thanks mathew
This is the first time I've heard this song. In the UK Break My Stride was a big big top 10 hit, but The Kid's American did not make our Top 40 at all.
I love that my friend Rhonda is in this video!!! Rhonda Vision is an American Phenomenon. She idealizes a classic American feminine beauty that is easy to love for several reasons. Besides being talented and creative, she is a natural actress, which means her true personality is expressed in roles. With Rhonda her art tends to be full of complexity and passion. Her humor often comes in the form of post-modern satire and paradoxical contradictions. She clearly lives to perform comedy and entertain others. Rhonda intuitively understood at a young age what Democritus and Shakespeare wrote about concerning Life, the World, and Theater. - Drogo
Erik Bananaman I agree. "Break My Stride" was a hit for a reason and that's because it was actually a good song. And people back in the early 80's had better taste and it was also a time when people still had input when it came to determining what would become a hit.
Filmed in Los Angeles in Wilshire Center around The Wiltern, back when the area looked more American than today, hardly resembles America anymore, tsk, tsk. Great video, great song, never heard it before, instantly LOVE IT! Thanks for making this song, gonna make it my anthem! You Rock Mr. Wilder! .::Modernaire
What makes it less American? I think I know what your getting at. The world is changing. Native Americans wish “america” was still the same when it was great for them
1984 was a good year but i only hated High School. Very different in many ways. Technology was easier. Computers were much complex. There were more office jobs then. File clerks no more. Secretaries no more. Data entry are getting rare. I have always wanted to work Office. Only did that a few times temporarily.
There was never a music video for “Break My Stride.” Wilder has said by the time he pitched one to his record label, the executives laughed at him and told him that there was no point at that point to make one because the single had already become a hit.
Okay then. I like "Break My Stride" way more than the average human, but "The Kid's American", and "I'll Make a Man Out Of You" are my two favorites from him.
