MATURE MAN'S RIFLE

Yesterday I filmed this video on my cell phone in between jobs while prepping the homestead for winter. I wasn't expecting to make the video and all of this was spontaneous but I've been thinking about the ZKK for a long time now and so the footage is somewhat organized.
We made the weekend a working holiday but as today is Thanksgiving I offer you my warmest wishes and hopes for the future. If you ever find yourself in a situation where a ZKK crosses your path then I hope this video helps you to make an informed decision.
Between 1964 and 1966 the Czech government migrated the production of long guns from Zbrojovka BRNO to Ceska Zbrojovka Uhersky Brod (CZUB). There are no CZUB marks on this rifle and so this may be one of the very last smoke poles to come out of the original Zbrojovka BRNO factory. This particular rifle was manufactured in 1966 and is one of the very first ZKK-600 rifles to come off the assembly line.
Rifle quality may vary by year. After the Soviets invaded Czechslovakia in 1968 it is my understanding that manufacture quality (especially finishing) of ZKK rifles were negatively impacted. If Ukraine has taught us anything its that the Soviets haven't changed and they are still running Russia.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Frank De Haas wrote in his book "Bolt Action Rifles" expanded 3rd edition on page 175 states the following when discussing the Brno ZKK action:
" The action is of all steel construction. The one piece receiver is a forging, very nicely machined on every surface. The 602 is probably the only forged magnum-length Mauser action made anywhere in the world today (at the time of writing), something that ought to make custom rifle builders sit up and take notice."
Later on page 179 when discussing the Metal Finish on the ZKK receiver he states:-
"The Brno ZKK receiver has an unusual finish. It seems to have been heavily sand blasted. The surface has a matte finish that is greyish in color, contrasting with the well-polished blued barrel and the bright bolt and extractor: the effect is quite pleasing."
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
At some point the manufacturing facility in Brno was renamed to Zbrojovka BRNO (BRNO Arms). The manufacturing facility in Uhersky Brod (CZUB) became a member of the Zbrojovka Brno Narodni Podnik in 1965. Firearms produced at Uhersky Brod were also marked "Brno". I think it's important to note that while these were still physically different manufacturing facilities, both were a part of the same National Enterprise. Throughout the Cold War CZUB manufactured a wide variety of sporting arms but they principally manufactured the ZKK (rifle), ZKM (rimfire), ZKP (pistol) and ZKR (revolver) series. CZUB also produced the VZ58 for the military.

ZKK 600 in 30.06. Made in 1976. Scoped but kept the peep sight. Monte Carlo stock. Changed the trigger to curved trigger to accomodate my short fingers. The only rifle I have ever hunted with. Tack driver.

It looks to me that the Koucky Brothers borrowed some ideas from the pre-64 Winchester M70 line-up (such as the bolt release). It is almost perfect timing that the post-64 Winchester rifles were not as popular and then the ZKK-600 impeccably lands in 1966. The timing is uncanny.

I very much like the sighting system they put on that rifle. Today nothing comes with open sights so you must add the cost of optics to the price. I also like that the scope mount is milled into the action omitting one point of possible movement. The narrowing of the stock reminds me of the big bore dangerous game rifles and what more can be said about the 30-06.

Over my 60+ years of collecting hundreds of bolt action rifles CZ is one of the few I have never owned! I have owned CZ pistols and they are one of the best quality firearms I have owned. I see very few CZ rifles where I live only a handful in the last 5-10 years. I hear of their quality and from all the video’s that show them is a testament to there great craftsmanship! I have had some of the finest bolt action rifles ever made and can attest to the feel of a great rifle when you shoulder it and look down the barrel and the fit in the shoulder that just makes you want to hold it in your hands for as long as you can and look a pond it’s beauty!

Had a ZK600 in .270 back in the 1970s. Like you I used the peep sight. The only problem I found with it, and it was minor, is that the peep sight often got bumped in use and you would find it back in it's recess in the receiver at that critical moment when you were about to take a shot. It sounds like a little thing, but disconcerting when it happens.

For 18 years I have used the CZ 550 in 9.3x62 Mauser for my guiding work offering Brown bears hunts with my clients. The 9.3x62 Mauser loaded with Barns TSX 286 grain bullets and 71 Grains H 414 does match the 375 H&H magnum. The 9.3x62 is a one bullet cartridge to large game the game over. If you don't reload then the options are Normal ammunition and the 232 grain Eco strike of Vulcan will flatten all Elk
@pewpewTN

9.3x62 is a cartridge that I've never even seen here in the States. From a reloading book, it looks like it has energy levels somewhere between 30-06 & .375 H&H, so it will be good for about anything at the proper ranges.

I have taken a good number of big game animals with the 9.3x62 it is an outstanding cartridge and excellent for timber Elk hunting or game of that type out to say 200-250 yards. It was the most popular general purpose rifle in Africa from its introduction in 1905 until the mid 1950s when the 375 H&,H magnum surpassed it. When I was a kid of 12 (1963) I watched an old home movie on an African hunt in the 1930s with a lady hunter. She was armed with a Mauser 98 Sporting rifle in 9.3x62 and she used it to take a large bull elephant, brain shot, down it went and she gave him an insurance shot. I was very impresses although had no idea what the 9.3x62 was.

@@sgtmajtrapp3391 I use my CZ 550 in 9.3x62 with Barns TSX 286 grain bullets and 70 grains of H-414 so with this load I have only needed one shot to put down brown bears to Yukon moose. I haven't yet fired it on game over 100 yards so whatever is getting shot is getting near full power of the 9.3x62. The 9.3x62 maybe getting retired for the new AR 10 upper in 375 WSM .

A great rifle, love my 600 in 9,3x64. Light for the cartridge and fits me, 1,9m tall, nicely with the monte carlo stock and triangular forearm. Bedded it and the impacts are touching at 100m. The peep sight is nice to have and don't interfere with the scope - no idea why many were taken off and lost. The factory mounts are overbuilt but they work and return to zero when taken off, good for rough cartridges. The Front sight protector of the current cz rifle slides on and holds in the grooves. Fitted a bolt in the trigger spring as a trigger stop, trigger weight is adjustable, set trigger looks weird but gives a pseudo 2stage feel, can be set and released without a noise and works great. Nice modifications to the 98 System - no cut in the locking lug with the ejector coming up spring loaded from below also holding the action open when on driven hunts before/after the drive. No provision for stripper clips but couldn't use them with scope and cardridge anyways, small thumb cutout but enough. Good capacity of 4+1, more then other 98s. No safe position to load but with my rifle i could cock, open action, safe and then load-the safety is pushed a bit backwards but still works and for unloading one can push the lock in the firing pin -doesn't concern me but is doable. Safety is backwards but has to be for locking the bolt closed in this simple way. No lock for the cocking piece to not rotate when action open only a detent but never missed it, it should still provide protection and venting points for gas should a case rupture and retains the 3rd lug. The Mag plate and lock effortless, no rattling, no accidental unlocking. If the muzzle was threaded it would still be the perfect hunting gun.

I went to the mauser website and they are going for $15,000 a rifle. Probably more of a wall hanger than a shooter. End of the month Im getting myself a german mauser anf it must be a carbine because the barrel is super short for a rifle. I need to check it out to know more about it. It has somekind of flip up rear sights and a turned down bolt handle , large ring from what i seen . He said it was 7mm.and showed me bullets. Be a perfect brush gun as it hits 100 yards targets with open style sights but it has a wierd sight were it flips up to raise the shooting distance. Not like the regular flat sights that moves the slider towards the front to accomodate distance. Looks really cool so im going to buy it.

Found out it was a spanish carbine 7mm mauser. Beautiful little rifle, and the kick feels like a small push. Real bush rifle. Sold it tho because i had too many things happen to me that can only be explained as ghosts. Last thing i heard was the boots walking to my room in the end of the hallway, made my 4 pitbulls freak out in a barking frenzy, sold it and havent had any ghost s bother me. I had a basket of clothes on a stand and i was standing beside it and all of a sudden the basket gets pulled off and lands on the ground right in front of my eyes!!! Now i think twice about buying old war rifles. bought a p14 303 and no ghosts so i got a good one. Plus it was one of those ones made after the war from left over parts, its the kind with no rear military sights and the rear sight protectors are cut off.

I have one of these rifles and it is a fantastic shooter. I bought it of the old man and he had since new. He ended up wearing out the barrel from shooting Roos and pigs on our farm and had the barrel replaced when I bought it off him. I use this gun regularly to this day over my other rifles that I have since bought and are nice guns but just don’t match the build quality, ergonomics and feel of these fine firearms.

The pip sights are pretty rare as they would be removed from the rifle and would get lost. I have a Leupold vx3 3-10 x42 mounted on the 270win that shoots extremely accurate with S&B 130g SP ammo. They were very popular here in Australia with farmers in 60s and 70s. I inherited a Brno 22lr from an uncle which first introduced me to Brno rifles.

Hi, Very impressive, looks practically new! A few points I would like too add which clearly show the impressive thought that has gone into the design of the rifle. 1. The barrel rear sight is a flip type variant with a fine and course cut out for very close range. Absolutely wonderful setup for three types of distances (short, medium and long range with apeture sight in the rear bridge). 2. The rear bridge has a special cut out, on the left side of trear bridge, so that the factory quick release optical mounts could be remouved and put back on practically without point of impact change! This simple design feature puts this rifle decades ahead of all other manufacturers. I sadly only have two, but they are both impressiv pieces of equipment that I would definately choose over all other rifles of mine if in the outback.

First of all, I like the title. I am going to plagiarize it and use it from now to describe many rifles in my collection. NOT a "Fudd gun"...it's a "mature man's rifle." 👍That is a beautiful rifle, with the usual Czech ingenuity. "Czechnology". FWIW I lived and worked in Ukraine for many years and visited Czech Republic (Czechia) many times. If you haven't been there...get there soon! Sleep when you get home. I purchased several Czech guns and I find all of them to be excellent values. I have two BRNOs, an O/U 12 ga. shotgun and a BRNO O/U rifle in 9.3x74R. I also have an Opava Ferdinand. A gorgeous 16 ga. double gun in a fitted case. I was able to buy these in Czech Republic and the store owner handled all the shipping and import paperwork. They were shipped to a US FFL who had an importers license and then forwarded to my hometown FFL who held them for me until I was back in the states. Even with shipping and import fees, the guns were a bargain! All of them are marked "Czechoslovakia", so they are pre-1989. The double gun is pre-WW2. Czechia is very "gun friendly". Shooting and hunting are very popular and they issue concealed carry licenses to anyone without criminal records. People are encouraged to own and use firearms.

I have been in the Czech Republic and travelled with the CDN Army to the rifle range facility at Plzeň Lobzy. We shot the BREN CZ805 and CZ75 SP01 Phantom small arms as part of a reserve force competition. If I had to move anywhere in Europe it would be the Czech Republic. The people spoke excellent English and were consummate professionals (they even wore suits and ties at a Kentucky Fried Chicken outlet). The number of Gypsies was a bit alarming.

@@Riflechair Yes, in cities at least, most Czechs speak English very well. Prague and Amsterdam were my favorite cities to visit.

Do you know if the receiver is threaded the same as a 98 MAUSER... If it is I would love to get a 223 and rebarrel it to accept a 350 legend for hunting deer in states that only allow straight wall cartridges
@Riflechair
@Riflechair Год назад
Some States have regulated straight wall cases only? I hope that idea never comes up here. Brno ZKK 600-601 = 1.020" x 2.00mm Pitch Brno ZKK 602 = 1.100" x 2.00mm Pitch As I recall large ring 98 Mausers have a 1.10 inch x 12 tpi thread with 55 degree threads

I see you're wearing a canadian army surplus wool jacket. thumbs up! I'm canadian too. I have brno 21h rifles - in 7mm and 8mm mauser. they too have a barrel tuning screw up into the frond, and they have double set triggers. butterknife bolt handles. 2 position safety on the left side of the bolt shroud. where did get the info on the klagnow factory? it seems difficult to get info on the brno rifle line. mine were made in the late 40's and early 50's. communist made! no logos, no brand names, just cartride info, proof marks and "zbrojovka brno, narodni podnik". made with love and maintained with love. not expensive at all for what you get.

There are proprietary and a wide selection of aftermarket scope mounting options available for the ZG47, ZKK line and CZ-550 rifles. Google search helps

Prob is no one is selling these. All I see is pushed plastic crap. CZ ditched the 550 and I won't buy their replacements. Winchester 70 are hard to find and pricey. ZASTAVA was supposed to sell here in US but can't find them. wtf.
