Beas deadpan delivery always made me think of Chers zingers , in fact they would have been a great Mother /daughter... of course, Olympia Dukakis did a great job in Moonstruck.
This was one of the best shows on tv back then. Maud was before its time. The theme song was even the best. I have never forgotten the words to it. Bea Arthur...such a great actress. the cast was just the living end. I'm praying someone uploaded more eps of this one.
I miss these old sitcoms so much. Maude, All in the Family, The Jeffersons... My childhood was populated by Norman Lear's characters, and I miss them so much...
You know it's the 70's back when the color scheme for kitchens was diarrhea brown and mustard yellow. Also with a splash of sage green and funky orange.😁
A lot of people don't know that Uber liberal Bea Arthur drove a supply truck while serving in the Marines in WW2. I may not agree with her politics but she gets mad respect from me for that. I've loved watching her throughout my life, especially in the All in the Family episodes, butting heads with Archie. Pure comedy gold.
@@savonjr16 Her politics mattered because it's pretty much all she talked about. Every interview, every question she was asked, every time she opened her mouth. Her entire TV existence was about her politics. And you have to jump in like some SJW defender and make a clown out of yourself. Smh.
Just an observation as I was watching this, their acting style is pure theater. From the strong vocal projection to the staging, this feels like I’m watching a play intermixed with a few close ups to remind you of the actual medium. It makes me wonder if this was a concession to Bea’s background and a subtle way to make her more comfortable or if this a reflection of the creative team and the time when it was created.
This comment made me realize what the “difference” was between Maude and The Golden Girls (aside from different decades, creative teams, etc.) that I couldn’t quite put my finger on. Thanks! :)
Possibly both, but a lot of shows from this time did this. Not all, so it might have been partly to do with the actors also ... and, in this case, even the character. One suspects Maude would have acted like this in real life ...
I think the reason we thought this was so hip is that NOBODY was talking about any of this stuff - hystos, blocked memory, black eyes, privacy. None of it.
Ugh I miss being a kid in the 80s...times were so much better. Fireflies were plentiful and summer days seemed endless and my grandmother barbecuing for the entire family.
I love that movie but still wish they kept the broadway mame and had Angela Lansbury as mame. If you get a chance watch her and bea Arthur performing their songs together. It’s on RU-vid!
I've looked for years for Maude to be on RU-vid. Am I wrong that 'Walter' is still alive? April 2021? Oops....so sorry, Bill Macy died in 2019. He damn near made 100! RIP
@@christinegelabert1651 who do you mean? Who was on on stage? The only GG alive is Betty White/Rose. Shes 99. Her last public appearance was in 2018 at the Emmys (according to Wickipedia)
I saw this first episode when it aired. My mother had a hysterectomy at the beginning of that year, 1972. This was my second sociology class after "All in the Family".
Found an ad just now that was underneath a video I was watching. Didn't know full episodes of this were online. This is great. Hope to see more. Hopefully more shows too.
One of thee BEST theme songs EVER !!! I remember watching reruns with my Godmother during my summer vacations. It was our goal to learn the theme song which I still know to this very day!
Maude, All In The Family, The Jefferson’s-it was smart television in a way we don’t get anymore. It made its point, but it didn’t hit you over the head with it-it didn’t have to. While you were laughing hysterically, you didn’t realize what you were absorbing. Even if the views didn’t match up to your own 100% - you were seeing another side through a smile. When you weren’t laughing you were being given characters and plots that had a sneaky amount of heart you didn’t expect from sitcom tv. That was the killer combo of all these Norman Lear gems. If only we could find a way to address many of these same issues today with the same level of class, dignity and humor - we’d realize there’s a lot more we have in common than we do that separates us.
@@reneebraxton1032 Well I Wouldn't Go That Far. He STOLE The Idea Of Good Times From Eric Monte,It Was Originally Called The Black Family. Esther Rolle(Florida)Started As Maude's Maid,And Her Husband(John Amos)Name Here Was Henry Evans,It Was Changed To James On Good Times. Anyway,He Originally Wanted Florida To Be A Struggling Single Mother,But Esther Rolle Insisted On Having A Husband And Father For Her Children,She Fought Hard For John Amos And Won. Then Norman Lear Fired John Amos And Killed Him Off Because They Focused On JJ Acting Clownish And Buffoonish!!! So While Norman Lear Was Brilliant,He Was Also A THIEF!!!
This isn’t the pilot. The pilot aired as an episode of All in the Family, where Archie and Edith went to visit Maude for her daughter Carol’s wedding. That pilot was used to sell the series to CBS. This is simply the first episode of Maude. Often the first episode is the same as the pilot, but that’s not the case here.
@Albert Dibari Yep. Maude actually appeared in two episodes. There’s the one early in the second season where she comes to take care of the family when they have the flu. And then there’s the one later in the second season where the Bunkers travelled to Maude’s for Carol’s wedding. That’s the episode that served as the “Maude” pilot, because the Bunkers have very small roles, and the episode focuses on Maude, Walter, and Carol.
That's because this is before Bea Arthur had a much publicized face lift in either late '72 or early '73 I had a buddy and his 4 sisters being raised by a single mother, and they all worshiped "Maude" So I definitely remember hearing all about it.
Carols character just had no direction. EVERY week it was a diff man and a diff prob. Maudes character had so much to deal with that comedy was the only solution. And it was FABULOUS!!
True. But I was 12-18 during the original run, and Adrienne Barbeau was the most gorgeous woman on television. I was hopelessly (and happily) shallow back then, so I suppose I didn't notice!
I remember watching this show with my parents when I was a child. Of course I did not understand most of it. 😂Oh my, Maude is really passive-aggressive. 😮
I've always liked Maude. Reminds me of my Aunt Mary. Just the way she talks and looks. Think I was more interested in her approval than my own mother. God bless my mom, though. Maude was and is like the twin sister of John Wayne.
She had a major face lift sometime at end of the first season or early into the second. She didn't try to hide it, because I remember her talking about it back then.
@queenofkingsbury I wish I could watch "Maude" more, but I watch it on FETV and there are WAY too many commercials and the commercials are depressing... Catheters and scooters and putting your parents in homes etc.
I swear, if my grown daughter EVER came up to me and put her finger in my face like that, I’d make sure that finger never worked again! Especially a child that calls her parents by their names! LOL
She only calls Walter by his name... He's not her father. Step father. And a grown up. She wouldn't call a step father daddy at nearly 30... But yeah, u don't put ur finger in ur mamas face lol
