Naw OP, that side of the island is a natural desert. Irrigation is used to make it green over there; same with Kihei. That said, I'm in Kihei right now. My best friend's cousin saw what caused this. High winds caused power lines to tip over, then the hot downed lines set his neighbors' grass on fire. The fire department had it contained, then wind picked up, and it was off to races. Lahaina is prone fires.

It appears very strong hurricane winds uprooted electric poles which started the fires. I am originally from Bangalore, India. We don't have hurricanes there but we experience very strong winds during the monsoon which uproot trees and electric poles. During such events, as a precaution, the electricity department deliberately shuts off all power transmission in the city until the storm passes. I am not an expert on this but this is something we need to look into doing here in the US.

Our family was in Maui last summer. Lahaina town was the place to visit often for us. The beautiful museum, the Banyan trees, the restaurants, the harbor, the friendly locals....Just unbelievable! We are asking our friends and family to donate to the organiztions that the governor has suggest. I think that is the least we can do

Lahaina...one of my favorite places on earth. Many pleasant memories there of sitting under that grove at the harbour with pleasant winds, Hawaiian ice cream and the music playing...or strolling up and down Front street and getting yummy fish or a great cheeseburger with a Lava Flow.

This is horrible and my thoughts and prayers are with the locals and those affected by this. However, it’s almost ironic that “pioneer inn” and other “historically significant” buildings that were built by settlers that helped contribute to the abolishment of the native language and culture, were all burned to the ground

Oh my days! I took my Mama to Maui for her 75th birthday-neither of us had been there. The island was so beautiful! We made it a point to go to Lahaina to visit the Cheeseburger in Paradise and to the outdoor shops. It was an amazing place! All of the old architecture, the people so friendly and happy to help lost tourists. We also spent time in Hana at the Hana Hotel. The drive was just breathtaking! I’m so glad I shot video of every place we went. It will stand as a bit of what was……so very sad. God bless all of the people of Maui and the tourists that were caught up in the disaster. My prayers go up to God to grant the people who have just lost virtually EVERYTHING! May all of the missing be found alive and, if not well, at least a high probability of recovery. I am so sorry you’re each having to endure this disastrous situation! 🙏🏻❤️
