Aloha, everyone! I'm Michael, a proud to be Hawaii born and raised, and today, I'm taking you on an exciting journey deep into the heart of Hawaii's natural beauty as we explore Kaumahina State Wayside Park. As a ham radio operator with the call sign KH6ML, I've found a unique way to blend my love for my homeland with the thrill of ham radio activations in the great outdoors.
Kaumahina State Wayside Park, nestled along the world-renowned Hana Highway in Maui County, Hawaii, is our starting point. You can locate it on the map with coordinates: 20.8713°N 156.169°W (BL10vu).
What makes this park so special? Well, besides being a tranquil oasis filled with dense forests and exotic plants, Kaumahina State Wayside Park offers breathtaking panoramic views of the northeast Maui coastline and the Ke'anae Peninsula. It's a haven for nature lovers, and for radio enthusiasts like me, it's a prime location for activating POTA (Parks on the Air) stations.
During our visit to this picturesque park, you'll get to experience the convenience of a rest stop, allowing you to soak in the beauty of Hawaii's rugged coastline while setting up your ham radio gear. The combination of natural beauty and radio adventure is truly one-of-a-kind.
Speaking of gear, when I'm out in the field at Kaumahina State Wayside Park, I rely on the versatile CHA LEFS 8010 antenna. This eight-band, no-tuner-required HF antenna covers the 80, 40, 30, 20, 17, 15, 12, and 10 meter ham radio bands (plus 60 meters with a tuner). It's the perfect companion for exploring Hawaii's pristine wilderness.
Key Specifications of the CHA LEFS 8010 antenna:
Frequency Coverage: 8 ham radio bands, no tuner needed
SWR: Typically less than 2.0:1 within specified frequency ranges
Power Handling: 500W SSB, 250W CW, 150W Digital Modes
RF Connection: UHF Socket (SO-239)
Length: 63 feet, extendable to 130 feet with included extension
Impedance Matching Ratio: 49:1
Weight: Just 1.5 pounds
In addition to the antenna, I've also incorporated the Bioenno Power BLF-1203AB Lithium Iron Phosphate (LiFePO4) Battery into my setup. This compact 12V 3Ah battery is ideal for portable electronics applications, and its small size and lightweight design make it perfect for our outdoor adventures.
Now, here's the latest addition to my setup - the BG2FX FX-4C SDR transceiver. This innovative transceiver developed by BG2FX covers all major HF bands and includes wide-band receive capabilities. Its small size (1 lb) and built-in speaker and microphone make it ultra-portable, allowing us to operate seamlessly amidst Hawaii's stunning landscapes. Plus, the built-in USB sound card interface simplifies digital mode operations.
Functional Characteristics of the BG2FX FX-4C transceiver:
TX and RX on 80-6m
2.0″ TFT display screen
Spectrum display and 48 kHz waterfall plot
Dual VFO operation (VFO A and B) with split mode operation
Internal USB sound card with serial communication via USB
Built-in Bluetooth
Adjustable DSP digital noise reduction
Ultra-wide input voltage: 9 V - 18 V

Curious about your antenna. Does it need a counterpoise? Why/why not?
