Maui Fire: How ‘Risk Blindness’ Made it Worse

The Hawaii wildfire that took more than 100 lives and razed the town of Lahaina wasn’t inevitable. Just as with earlier fires in California and Colorado, the conflagration was spawned by a combination of natural and human-made factors. As climate change heightens the risk of extreme weather events that endanger lives and livelihoods, a common factor in many of these disasters is emerging: risk blindness.

Yes, if they had just left lots of cow farmers there without putting them out of business, the dry grasses could have been consumed and the destruction of this part of the planet would not have happened. But I realize we're very worried about cow farts.

@@fredchopin8614 They could have easily done a controlled burn to remove the grasses but I think the fire was caused inside Lahaina by a fallen power wire. The power company could have shut off the power.

The marines there on Maui are to be ready in 30 min to help people but no one ever bothered. Children bussed back home from school, and actually left alone since parents were still at work with no warnings of fires, and just burned alive; those on the island saying it's truly 1000+ killed. They receive $700 per family; those crossing border receive $2000.

And also, NORMALACY BIAS... people think things will always be as they have been. They WILL NOT be. I encourage everyone to prepare for all the possible/most likely disaster scenarios that could affect their area. Have a plan. Have a contingency plan. And have another contingency plan. The government WILL NOT save you. BE PREPARED.

Common sense would have made a large impact on this and other situations like this one. Most weather systems are known weeks out, and the powers to be did nothing in preparation for this event. They even announced that they were waiting for something like this to happen.

They are reporting that the loss of water was due to water connections failing due to the fire causing massive leakage. The working pumps could not keep up resulting in a loss of water for the hydrants. Sad part is that it was already known that municipal water supplies fail in wild fires as connections fail.

One escape route out. That was blocked. By Maui police. This scenario could happen many times over in Hawaii as most of us have one exit route and power poles 4 feet off the road.

Economic actors have, unsurprisingly, got this dangerously backwards. The risk is not to business and finance, it is from business and finance. Risk disclosure should report on the externalized risk to the global commons, natural regulatory cycles, and biodiversity. It should be considered in the aggregate with other firms and industries, over medium and long-terms. It should anticipate potential boundary interactions between disparate systems. Why hasn’t the aviation system considered the risk of spreading pathogens? Why don’t technology firms anticipate the risk of energy demand? Why doesn’t agriculture consider the risk of land-use changes? Etc.

There’s no question that population patterns have shifted over time and roads, transportation requirements, water, gas and power requirements no longer meet community needs nation regardless of whether the cause shifting weather patterns are caused by fossil fuels or climate cycles and infrastructure, building codes and zoning requirements are antiquated. It’s relatively easy for insurance companies to revise rates but utility companies and State and local governments have failed their populations. Maui is just the latest failure but let’s not neglect that insurance companies are leaving Florida and California en masse and power grids in more states than Texas are trying to keep air conditioners running during August 2023.

The climate has been changing naturally for thousands of years that we know of. In addition, many of these devastating forest fires in the US and Canada are fueled by forests that have been growing wild for decades, building up massive amount of flammable fuel. The US Forest Service calculates that California forests alone have 129 million dead trees. Meanwhile, logging has been banned in most areas in the US, and forest "management" has too. Many towns in the Pacific and Canadian Northwest are totally surrounded by flammable forests that extend into the town's neighborhoods. When the forest catches fire, the town may very well ignite too.

97% of forest fires are not caused by electrical lines. mostly by lightning strikes. It's about local & state management of fuel supplies, emergency management & building codes, not Climate change.
