Pulled from the vault video from Mauna Loa Summit Hike. Elevation: 11,405 feet, 3476 meters - Headed towards the summit cabin. The cabin itself is at 13,250 feet.
Interested in the hike:
Start at the 6660 feet trailhead, follow the signed Mauna Loa trail for 7.5 miles to Red Hill Cabin at 10,035 feet. The terrain transitions from small trees to a barren landscape with mist at the 8800 feet timberline. Beware of sunburn at higher elevations. Stop at Red Hill Cabin, the only apparent campsite, where rainwater is stored.
The next 11.8-mile leg leads to the Summit Cabin at 13,250 feet, passing volcanic cones. At 11,845 feet, a signed spur trail offers frozen water. At a junction 9.5 miles from Red Hill, choose left for Summit Cabin or right for the true summit. Most opt for the Summit Cabin at 2.1 miles left or the true summit at 2.5 miles right. The cabin provides rainwater and permanent ice in a nearby crack. Expect a chilly stay above the clouds.
The round trip covers 43.2 miles, including both the Summit Cabin and the true summit, usually taking 3-4 days, with four recommended.
Get a backcountry pass from the national park service. There is limited water and shelter. Know before you go.
