clive LITERALLY never stopped loving him, but all that shit of his friend going to jail really messed up his head. I love that maurice and alec got a happy ending, but jesus they were endgame

How were they the endgame when their relationship is literally doomed to fail unlike Maurice and Alec? Clive never wants to give what Maurice craves the most-physical intimacy, bodily love. And therefore Maurice was tricked into believing that platonic is happy enough for him when it isn’t. Plus not to mention Maurice becomes much more misogynistic and snobbish and rude towards his own family under Clive’s influence. They’re anything BUT endgame. If they were, then that means Maurice would’ve lived a lie his whole life-that being gay aka being himself is wrong. That’s the kinda relationship you see as “endgame”?
@GTK4217
@GTK4217 Год назад
@anonymous understandable but not forgivable. Maurice deserves someone better and Clive definitely doesn’t deserve Maurice.
@GTK4217
@GTK4217 Год назад
@@orangecherry9629 maybe because he’s a misogynist who influenced and encouraged Maurice to be a misogynist and treat his own family terribly? Maybe because he manipulated and gaslighted into Maurice into a platonic relationship? Maybe because he constantly used his intellectual talk about philosophy and religions to make Maurice feel small? Maybe because he kept Maurice on a leash and kept trying to “improve” Maurice into someone else he’s not? Maybe because Clive represents everything wrong in Edwardian England and is a pathetic asshole himself?

The deleted ending where Clive said “look, I care for you a little, otherwise I wouldn’t stand for what you’ve just told me.” And Maurice replied “You care for me a little I *do* think. But I can’t hang all my life on a little. You don't. You hang yours on Anne. You don't worry whether your relation with her is platonic or not, you only know it's big enough to hang your life on. I was yours once till death if you’d cared to keep me, but I’m someone else’s now- and he's mine in a way that shocks you, but why don't you stop being shocked, and attend to your own happiness?" And then Clive went on talking not even realizing Maurice had already walked away, having left behind only a little pile of petals from the evening primrose bush he had been plucking at

I honestly feel for Clive and wish that they'd ended up together had the world been kinder. Okay I haven't read the book BUT I feel like I can understand why Clive was so scared of being with Maurice. For starters in my opinion he had a lot more riding on him and a lot more to lose than Maurice had. His career in politics (which was to help the poor from what I saw) would be over. I get sacrificing yourself for love but also it's understandable he couldnt do that, especially because he was at risk of being killed and/or imprisoned and that had been beaten into him his whole life. He could still love Maurice deeply and not want that for himself. Also, we're hard on Clive for being a coward but he had to deal with the fact one of his close friends got outed. He saw first hand what could easily happen to him, and that messed him up in the head a lot. That one particular moment I think made him realise just how dangerous being with Clive was. Plus the judge really layed it on with the 'youll lose your name and home and family etc.' which cant have helped very much. Sure, Clive could've risked it all to be with Maurice, but to know that your whole life (and your lovers life too) could be ripped away from you is not an easy thing to acknowledge or happen. I can guarantee that in this day and age, Maurice and Clive would've stayed together and been the soulmates they were destined to be; it was society that tore them apart, not Clive, who I think was just frightened and doing his best to protect them. I know a lot of people like Alec, and I can sort of see why. He was there for Clive and was willing to stay with him no matter what society said. This is probably because of the film, but I felt like they didnt really have anything in common, and their love happened so fast. Sure Alec was willing to give uo everything to be with Maurice but in the end he didn't really have all that much to give up in the first place, whereas Clive did. Personally, I think that Alec took advantage of Maurice in a way because Maurice was obviously broken hearted (Alec admitted to knowing about him and Clive) and used that as an excuse to get to his heart. Whilst he genuinely cared about Maurice at the end, part of me is sceptical as to his intentions in the first place and if he took advantage of Maurice in the first place. Clive and Maurice were much more similar, they had similar backgrounds, had the connection of friendship first and all in all had better chemistry than Alec and Maurice did. Yes I just finished the movie, it's midnight and I probably got loads of things wrong but in this essay I will...

i know that they were each other’s first loves and clive did what he did out of the pressures of being hetero at that time but i don’t really feel too sorry that maurice ended up with alec after how clive treated him. especially after how clive initiated the relationship and later on made maurice feel bad about himself.
@flowerbookmark

yeah... that's valid like i honestly kind of hated him in the second half of the movie and i like alec with maurice but i never got as invested in their relationship as i was with maurice and clive in the beginning

stella You can't blame Clive. He had everything to lose. He was upper class and titled. His life was literally planned out for him. He was expected to inherit their land, wealth and title, marry and produce heirs. He had no say in what he wanted to do in life. The movie hints at that plenty of times esp his controlling mother. Maurice is middle class so is afforded some freedom to be discreet with his relations. Scudders is lower class. He has nothing to risk. In fact, he has everything to gain being in a relationship with Maurice because Maurice becomes his benefactor. I don't have any issue, I just couldn't feel love or connection other than a physical one with Alec and Maurice. Scudders was introduced too soon and their story too rushed.

I am happy that Maurice was able to end up with a man, Alec, rather than having to live a life of a lie, however I feel like the love between Maurice and Clive was Deeping and more romantic intimacy, whereas the relationship between Maurice and Alec seemed alot shallower and physical intimacy and sexual, rather than as much romance and stuff like Maurice had with Clive, his first love.

i always saw clive as broken and i really feel for him. sure he was a coward but he pushed maurice away bc he wanted to save his reputation and ig he’d rather be socially acceptable than become a “disgrace” to his family. clive never stopped loving maurice and in the deleted scenes (they’re somewhere on yt) after simcox rode off after almost catching them hugging at the abandoned house/church place w the horses, clive went on a rant to maurice ab how he never wanted to get married and that he didn’t want to have children. also this is small but when he was walking w mary down the aisle at the wedding, he’s smiling but as he walks off screen he stops smiling (this may or may not be influenced by the fact that young hugh grant was pretty af) IF ONLY THEYDVE MOVED TO FRANCE BRO

am I the onlt person who found it kinda unserious, confusing and a bit cringe. I mean yes there were nice scenes, but ...eh. I feel like this could have been written better. The way they just kept this cringe relationship, and also that guy who rejected maurice, was so shocked maurice got with the gardner. Like....Bro..
@elain_.
@elain_. Год назад
I think the point of their "weird" and "confusing" and "unserious" relationship was because the time the movie take, which is in 1910, when LGBT+ community wasn't a thing and it was illegal and can make you go to the bottom of society and people was not educated well about sex/ sexuality, and the character in the movie are just as confusing as everyone else since no one/ little people around them will accept their love. Just my opinion, I was shock too 😅

That’s just pathetic. Clive was never suited for Maurice. He wouldn’t sacrifice for maurice. He was condescending towards Maurice. Making him feel small with his intellectual talks. And most importantly: NOT WILLNG TO BE PHYSICAL. He even tricked Maurice into believing that being platonic is happy enough. That’s what u want for maurice? To suffer and live a lie his entire life? Quite pathetic
@rapoliente
@rapoliente 26 дней назад
@@GTK4217 girl, what are you talking about? Clive and Maurice suited each other very well :D If there was anyone out there who didn't suit, it was Alec, the broke BUTLER. Clive belonged to the upper class, so he had to do what his oppressive mother imposed on him. Well, according to you, the MOST IMPORTANT thing was that he wasn't willing to be physical. I'm having a hard time understanding, does every person have to experience something physical with their lover? In my opinion, it doesn't matter as long as you love the person in front of you. Clive had strong and understandable reasons for moving away from Maurice. For God's sake, Clive had a name, a status and a family to protect. There was literally nothing he could do in the circumstances of that time. So instead of making him feel hopeless, he tried to convince himself that it was best to be platonic. He tried to make Maurice believe it too, because he CARED ABOUT him! He didn't want Maurice to be exposed, to be discredited. Clive tried to warn him, but Maurice wouldn't listen. He made love to a simple butler and supposedly fell in love with him. Bullshit. Their relationship is about passion and sexuality. I think that's what's quite pathetic. P.S. Clive wouldn't be a bad person just because he didn't do what Maurice did. Everyone's values are unique to themselves. Not everyone has to choose 'love'. Although... It wasn't love that Maurice chose either, but whatever.
