Maurice Ohana (1913 - 1992) - In Dark and Blue (1990)

Maurice Ohana's In Dark and Blue is his second work for cello and orchestra. The work was commissioned by Mstislav Rostropovich, who premiered the work in Japan in 1991.
"In 1990 Ohana completed his second commission from Rostropovich, for the cello concerto In Dark and Blue. Like Dutilleux's concerto Tout un monde lointain, In Dark and Blue exploits sheer beauty of tone and melodic expression, and regularly gives prominence to the high registers of the cello. Whereas Ohana's first cello concerto, Anneau du Tamarit of 1976 was written to the memory of Federico Garcia Lorca, and concerned Spanish themes, his second concerto reflected his fondness for jazz and blues and paid homage to Louis Armstrong. The second main section beginning at fig. 29 (13:02) which functions as an expressive interlude, bears the inscription 'Here's to you Satchmo!'"
