This is 8 minutes of the 1931 French film 'Un Soir De Rafle'. This segment was chosen and uploaded as it contains images of a young 27 or 28 year old Maurice Tillet, later and better known, as the French Angel early in his acting career. Although he is seen a number of times throughout, he is introduced as "The Cannon Man" at timestamp 1:20.

If you don't understand what they say here is a little resume : The story takes place at a funfair, Charlie, the guy at 2:25, is a former french and european champion in several weight classes and he will face somebody from the crowd in a boxing match. They first ask if a soldier wants to fight him but he leaves, then the sailor says he'll do it. 3:54 the sailor gets asked by the promoter (I guess he is the promoter) if he knows how it works here, he tells him they don't really fight and that he should last 3 rounds before he takes a loss by knock out, if he accepts, he would be allowed to ask for a little money to the crowd after the match. But he answers he won't do that. The promoter goes to speak to Charlie and says the sailor refuses to lose that way, so it will be a shoot. That why he puts a pebble in Charlie's gloves. The sailor manages to win by knockout and is still allowed to get some money from the crowd because he won the match clean.

Wow Alessio, now I see exactly what you are saying about them admitting it in 1930-31. Talking about the true nature of worked matches in the old-school circus, fun-fair. I would not have expected that either! Thanks for the synopsis!

Thank you for the video ! Also at 2:06 the sailor says, "let's leave, this is fake." Makes me wonder when did people started knowing about wrestling being a work and how kayfabe remained so strong for so many years.

My pleasure Alessio. I'm ecstatic to find something this early in Maurice's acting career. To have it cross over into professional, athletic, worked matches is AMAZING. It's a ridiculous foreshadowing on Maurice's future. Because what I do is about the rediscovery and preservation of Maurice's history, can you imagine how often Maurice might have thought back on this film, it's theme, and his role in it?

You don't know how rare this stuff is. Over the reading of thousands of newspaper articles, and various wrestling programs, with interviews there are something like 5 total films he was mentioned as taking part. Although he himself said there were many. One of the movies was degraded and cut-down from the original and what remains he is not in. Another appears also to have been cut down, but in that one case I have a cinema lobby card that proves he had a part. I have yet to find film footage on "Bateliers de La Volga", the French Version, but thankfully again a press packet proves he's in that one. So far, only got footage of him from this one, and Princess Tam Tam. I'm sure more will show in time, it's just laborious as, generally to find more, one has to be motivated to watch 1930 - 1937 French cinema for signs of the big man.

There was a wrestling shack in every French funfair until th 80's : alpra.blogspot.fr/2013_08_27_archive.html What a great illustration in this movie! Here is the translation when Maurice is introduced at 1:20 : « And now ladies and gentlemen, I’m pleased to introduce you « The Cannon Man, » the strongest athlete in the world. Charles Rigoulot* himself has never accepted to challenge him, challenge that had been reiterated several times » *famous french weightlifter, car pilot and wrestler in the1920’s 1930’s - he won the Olympics in 1924 in weightliftng

Victoria, thank you so much for the translation. I worked on the collage of his images from his scenes to add them to Maurice's main blog-page on his life, and in particular this movie. What you just provided will go into the description word for word! Thanks again!!

When do we see Maurice ? Anyway the stuff they say is pretty crazy for a 1931 movie, basically acknowledging wrestling is worked.

Ah come on, you can't see him? Sorry, could not resist. Professional wrestling started in the old circus. They used plant people in the crowds not to injure the performers. Alessio, I have no idea what they are saying. Unfortunately English is all I know. We see him at :54 - Left side of stage blurry in a dark robe, 1:00 hiding behind post, robe now gone, he's in a V-neck T-shirt & dark shorts, from now on. 1:20 - He gets introduced and the camera is looking up at him while he raises his arm. 2:12 - Far left, hands on hips, 4:47 Camera pans left, he's on stage clapping his hands, 7:02 - Blurry in background arms behind back., 7:26 - Arms behind back standing against the wall.

I was not sure it was him at 1:20 and I did not catch him the other times. You maybe should put the timestamps in description. I'll try to post a resume of the story soon.
