those drones use cheap motors, they are 2 wire where the DJI use 3 wire heavy duty motors ( one wire is a tach, the other 2 are for the stepper motor) you get what you pay for.

Put a dot of white paint or nail polish on the "top" side of the cable for a visual indication of which way it needs to be plugged in. Definitely agree, USB-micro needs to go away!

Thank you for your tip. After you correctly insert the micro-usb cable into your controller (9:09), put a white dot on the black connector body on the side facing up, with white correction fluid. That way you will always know what is the correct orientation. Also flag the cable, that is put a tab of white gaffer tape on it and mark it as you DJI charging cable and keep it with the charger and other accessories you carry. Final note: this video is much longer than it has to be. Less is more. Keep in mind for future videos. Cheers, Frederic in Montréal.

Thanks for confirming my experience. Just yesterday, I bought a used Mavic Pro. The only thing missing was a cable for charging the controller. At first, I was stumped because I couldn't find any micro USB cables that were rectangular.This morning, I took the controller to Best Buy and asked them if they had the appropriate cable, and when they saw the rectangular USB port on the controller, they said, "No, man. That must be a proprietary connector. You'll have to buy the cable from DJI." I went home and did more research online and learned that a standard USB micro connector would work if you put it in the right way, as you describe in your video. So I did a quick experiment with an old phone-charger cable and quickly learned it does fit, I only wished that I had seen your video earlier and saved a trip to Best Buy. And I fully support your appeal to DJI to update the port technology.

u are so right but as someone said in a later comment, it is a micro usb "a" that is rectangle....dji ships the drone with the incorrect plug....I was charging mine with the supplied cable until it just did not feel right....if u look at the supplied android to controller plug, it is micro usb on one end and a rectangle micro usb a on the other....this is a gross oversight of the company and I'm sure it has caused a LOT of broken controllers....now I have to wait for the cable to arrive before I can fly my new drone :-(

The side jack on DJI controllers is a USB Micro A. The typical USB cord we all have laying around the house is a USB Micro B, with it's little D shape plug. While it is "possible" to force the Micro B plug into the Micro A jack, this will put stresses on the jack that will shorten it's life considerably. If you lose your DJI charging adaptor, (which is why I hate adaptors in the first place...) You can readily purchase the correct USB charging cables on Amazon.

Many have likely suggested this, but I put a small white "dot" on the "up" side of all the Micor USB pluigs. (white-out, or white paint--pen). I do this on ALL my micro-USB goodies; Really helps.
@basspig
@basspig 6 лет назад
The Mavic USB port is a Micro USB-A port. Your cable is a Micro USB-B connector. Sure, you can force fit it, but as you found out, it will eventually break the port. Monoprice sells the correct cable for 92 cents. I ordered a dozen of them.
@chiupolini
@chiupolini 6 лет назад
I was told by DJI that their RC Port was "USB micro AB" type so that it would accept both micro A and micro B plugs. The thing is they don't tell you that there is a fixed side you should insert it if you are using micro B plugs.

I couldn’t find any micro usb a cables on that site, do you have a link to cable?
@chiupolini
@chiupolini 6 лет назад
No, the charging socket in the M2 controller is not micro A. It is micro AB. You won't find any Micro B to Micro AB adaptor in the market - not that I can find anyway. But as the cable from the charger uses micro B plug, you can buy a micro B to micro B female to female adapter. Insert the micro B charger cable into one end of the adapter. Then take the RC cable which comes with Mavic and insert the micro B plug into the other end of the adapter. Use the other end of the RC cable, which is micro AB format, to plug into the micro AB socket of the controller. Problem solved.

The Mavic controller has a USBMicro-A (rectangular) port, while the industry standard is the USBMicro-B connector. I can't figure out why. But, you have to be gentle with it, THAT I know.

Thank you for sharing the FAA aspect of controller repair. This is a common problem with micro-usb ports in general. I use those magnetic chargers that they sell on Amazon to minimize this. They don't last, but the only time I would be unplugging from the port is to replace the plug.

Hi. Why, oh why, do manufacturers use this sort of connector to provide power? It's really not up to the job. Even when you get them in the right way round, and it does help if the case moulding reflects that, then they are still flimsy and fail. I've found its often the plug rather than the socket that fails. A very gentle 'crimp' with a pair of narrow nose pliers can sometimes restore connectivity. Try at your own risk! BobUK.

Hint: There's usually a USB icon on both ends of the cable. That icon "most always" goes up, or toward you when the USB port is vertical on a device.
@knockg7266

I cannot rely on using the USB icon as I have cables where the USB icon is on the micro-USB's "tappered" side and other cables where the USB icon in on the micro-USB's "non-tappered" side. My "cheat" is to look for the two "slide rails" on the bottom of the micro-USB connector as my guide to which side is down. Having seen this video, I now have a paint mark on the connector to indicate up.

Bless your heart for sharing this! I just bought a used, but only used once Mavic Pro, and I noticed the female input on the controller was that square micro, looking one. I didn't know you could plug in the one with the beveled top edge. When I look at the little pins and stuff in either the male or female, they don't look quite like they'd match, but again, I'm old and my vision is worse. I did try doing it like you said and it seems to work. I know this from using my cell phone, it's soooooo easy to plug it in upside down, when your not looking or in a hurry. After your experience, I'm absolutely gonna pay attention to all of this. That's about par for the course that it would be so interconnected it would cost a bundle to get it replaced. You know, I'll bet, if they engineered it where they had a little harness that the female input that's on the controller was attached to inside the controller, we or they could just buy the little harness with a plug on each end and put it in ourselves. That would make more sense to me, because these little plugs take an enormous amount of use and abuse. I know my cell phone input, eventually gets very lose and thank God I have the maintenance type extended warranty on it or I'd be buying a new cell phone for about 700 bucks, all because of this cheesy little wimpy plug they have on here. Thanks again. Marc.

it's like they haven't updated the overall platform for Mavic pro. I have the AIR and i love it. The fly more kit, The controller, storage in the bag. very nice configuration. I just got the Mavic Pro 2 and it seems like its last generation ideas. The bag isn't big enough for the drone let alone batteries, chargers, accessories, ETC. Now onto the controller. I had to sit down and Google how to charge because that wasn't clear straight out of the box. Looking at the port for the first time i was like "this is gonna be trouble" then i find your video AND thank god you put this video out. This should be pinned on their website so people can be cautious. I have now subscribed to your channel because i have seen 7 videos and liked all of them so far!

It depends on the person itself to put the USB in the wrong way. You aren't really a careful person. I never had this issue because I used to check this also with my phones.. but since I have USB C phones I am extra careful. Wonder why DJI didn't go for USB c ones
@Maniac742

The whole point of micro USB tapering was to prevent mis-insertion, but DJI was retarded to make the port square against industry convention. That's their terrible design. No one else's.

USB C cable would solve this issue as it can be plugged on either side. Does this make the Mavic USB cable proprietary? It doesn't seem like it's standard connector. =( The USB logo indicates which side is up or down as well. Is there not a logo on there? Most devices have the logo- still waiting for my device to arrive and I won't know until Tues. =(

Interesting video, but no offense and please dont take this the wrong way. You should really pay attention to how you plug in USB ports. You're not the only one, which is why USB-C is invented. Anyway, the control board that houses the USB port on the Mavic Pro controller can be replaced, it's just a matter of finding the replacement board on ebay. If you watch some of the video on RU-vid about disassembling the controller, it's actually easier than you would imagine. I know, I've done it before and I was afraid because it's an expensive controller. But after getting over the fear, I was able to disassemble and reassemble the controller on my own.

Romeo Mesina I agree Dji logo is one top indicating micro usb correct way to plug in. But it’s not an easy one for consumers to be honest micro USB ports the worst with little thoughts into it this is why usb C design port is multi directional . Apple is ahead of the rat race here .
@StevenTheGeek
@StevenTheGeek 5 лет назад
This isn't a case of USB being plugged in the wrong way, this is DJI using a non approved socket. DJI aren't allowed to display the official USB logo if you can slot it in the wrong way. USB standards before USB-C were created for a reason too :)

When I purchased my Mavic Pro I purchased a phone magnetic charging cord. Works perfect. I do not use the little cords that come with the controller I use a nice cord to my phone and plug it into the bottom usb port and plug it into my phone when I am flying. The reason I do this is because I use the magnetic cord to charge the unit only. So the micro usb magnetic insert goes into the side and just leave it there (never take out) when I go to charge I just pick up my cord and it automatically connects to the attachment that is in the controller. YOU never have to worry about messing up the controller by taking the cord in and out all the time. If you would like more details let me know.

I’ve used 3 different brands of micro USB cables for the Mavic 2 remote, but each cable causes a little more damage to the port each time I insert the cable - even though I do it correctly! It seems as if the only way the remote’s port doesn’t sustain any damage is by using the DJI supplied micro USB cable and the included micro USB cable on the power adapter. I don’t know why this is, but I can only use the DJI cables for that port. So much for charging it with after-market cables on the Fstop Labs Mavic 2 Battery Charger ...

Agreed on the micro USB rant... I just got a new Mavic Air and the drone itself has a USB C connector but the controller still has a micro USB connector. Their fix was to include a USB C to micro adapter in the box l. What a joke that turned out to be... The adapter fits loosely when plugged in and if the cable is not held just right, the controller will not charge. Sounds like I will soon be in the same situation as you, only caused by the OEM supplied accessories!

I'd like to clarify, that you may or may not be able to do a replacement of the usb port, since they do seem to have a somewhat custom one. If you could, it could cost a few cents for the part. Otherwise, a board replacement for that area can be had for 16ish dollars (if you're paying 48, you're getting ripped off). The problem you have with yours, is not a 200 dollar problem. It's barely a 48 dollar problem. The only reason it should cost as much as 48, is if you're paying someone to do the fix for you.

Personally I would buy the replacement board, and just swap the port. If you can do basic SMD soldering, this would be a breeze.

Thank you for this video, Russ. I have notice, the two or three times I have charged the controller that it is difficult to make a mini fit. Assuming from the start it was a regular mini, now I need to go find the one that came with it. I am always careful with the minis on any of my gear, double checking the "fit. On another note, belated thanks for all the beginner videos you have done. No telling how much grief I have been spared, having the information up front is so many areas. Hope you get some warmer weather soon, I have a son in Nort Dakooda and keep an eye on your Winters. Too much for my old bones....

Great discussion. I am from Hong Kong. Just got my Mavic 2 Pro yesterday. My first Mavic. I ran into the same problem. I found that RC port is rectangular. But except for the RC cables, I do not find any charging cable which has a rectangular plug. Even the charging cable attached to the DJI charger is USB micro B type. So I went up to the DJI Support at Facebook. There, after much explanation including video and photos, the guy told me that USB micro B could be inserted into the RC part direct and told me not to doubt him. However he did not tell me that there were two sides to the RC port and that I should insert the USB micro B plug with the tapered side facing up. Emboldened by his "guidance", I confidently pressed the USB plug in hard and found no response. Today I went to the Hong Kong DJI Store and they found the RC Port was damaged by me!!!!! After I leveled a barrage at them about what I was told yesterdya by their Support, they took the controller in and now certify that I can get a brand new replacement controller for the "repair costs" of HK$356, or USD45.64. I paid under protest, but will try to get me a complete refund for giving me misleading information. DJI should have informed everyone about how people should properly plug in their USB micro B plug into the RC port for charging. But this is not in the manual or any tutorial video. I think you got a raw deal there. We all do.

I modded my controller with the Itelite antenna kit. I knew if I made a mistake, I would have to replace it. Thankfully, even with my disabled hand, I did the upgrade and it worked. I suggest taking your time when charging connecting cables or pay for replacement.

Thanks for the video. I've had similar problems with other micro USB devices (and also regular USB devices). I think using the provided cables is the way to go. They work well. At least you'd have a good case with DJI if you have a failure using them. And I totally agree that a new input configuration is needed.

Make two dots (white nail polish), one on the proper orientation for the mirco USB insert and a dot of the controller where the USB plugs in - line up the dots when inserting.

I'm back tracking here. I stumbled across your remote control problem again.. Decided to watch it and realized it's actually pretty easy to fix. I know this because I recently upgraded my mavic pro controller antennas.. and then when I took out the micro USB port circuit board I remember thinking of you saying it was very difficult and expensive to fix thinking it's very simple.. It actually pops right out the board and all with the buttons in a board only cost like $17 on eBay and other drone companies... To take the controller apart and put it back together took me about ( an 1hr ) . And that's with me being very very careful. I could probably take it apart and put it back together in about 40 minutes now.. Everything in there was replaceable and you can find parts now. I actually took it apart twice. Because the new antennas didn't do much better than The originals.. So that's weird that you had trouble finding people to do this. There are tons and tons of videos.. so basically I'm telling you this because you popped into my head when I was taking apart the controller remembering micro USB problem.. And I can't believe THEY DIDN'T FIX THE ISSUE WITH THE MAVIC PRO 2 LOL!!! ARE YOU KIDDING ME!! You would think a billion dollar company would at least switch to a USB c port or at least taper the New port like every micro USB female connection there is in the world!! I would say that's the first time I've ever seen a square micro USB port... Here's your new $1,500 drone WITH THE SAME PROBLEM 😂

I enjoyed your video and feel your pain. The micro USB port on your controller is square because it's an "on the go" (otg) port. I just learned this yesterday. It would seem (and verified by your experience) that the square connector offers less protection than the typical micro USB port but if you had an OTG cable it will not plug into a standard micro USB port. Don't hold your breath for DJI to change because there are thousands of us that have purchased OTG cables for our Spark to resolve what apparently is an issue using a WiFi connection on the phone. Sometimes "standards" are good and sometimes they hold back progress. Interestingly, I have a OTG cable where the metal seam is down and the charge cable, the metal seam is up. I've inserted the connecter the wrong way more times than I would like to admit. I just ordered all white cables where I can mark what "UP" is. Thanks again for your video.

I have placed a dot of fingernail polish on the "top" of all my charger cables... lime green is micro-USB, white is mini-USB, etc. With the move to USB-C, I'll have to come up with a new color scheme... On the (larger) USB end, it's "orange up"... You get the idea. Works great.

Hi, yes for the most part the majority of ports are integrated into the main board. This can be fixed and although "fixing" these days seems to mean replaced. I have fixed these ports on different electronics and cellphones. It does take special equipment but i just hate seeing people get screwed out of money especially when the replacement part would cost maybe around 0.10 I use to buy them in lots of 50 i believe. Try this, find an electronics school or program in your area and see if they are willing to allow one of their students to make the repair. This would probably happen at little or no cost as it serves as an excellent educational opportunity for the student to learn and the Teacher to teach.

fine the right way to insert the cord in the small port and take some white out and put it on top that way the white mark is facing you and just be gentle putting it in, if you look closely you can see the little tongue on the control is off center, just look at the input cord and you can see what way it has to fit. but it still sucks that Mavic does not have a better connection especially for the mail controller

I recalled my first time with the micro sub connection but never gave it much thought. I learned what side is up and the idea of marking it is good. My question is why would dji go a different route - they must know this is not a standard form and could cause a problem and then the customers would have to purchase another controller, Hummmmmm more $$$$$ for them. This is an Achilles heal of the controller and thank you for letting us know. " PS - sorry for you loss"

Excellent point... I'm shocked that a high end device is using a terrible outdated usb port! Charging should be strictly by non-usb round plug. Usb port should be for data only and not micro size but either type C or standard (large) usb! Phone calls you've had are typical these days unfortunately, and great re-enactment of the call! Thumbs Up for that!

I think manufacturing cost plays a factor with using usb type-c. Either they want to keep the cost low or give a reason for customers to jump to the new version of drone with the updated controller.
