Normally we cut down the videos to be shorter and contain only the essentials. But this staple technique of martial arts has far too many details and things to mention for that. Therefore it is deserving of being the longest video we have made so far!
Kyokushin Karate Mawashi Geri, also known as round kick or roundhouse kick - is a unique variation of roundhouse kick that is fundamentally different from the way it's executed in Muay Thai, Taekwondo or other Karate styles such as Shotokan or Goju Ryu.
It is a snapping technique but optimized for damage - and can be executed with the head as a target from a range shorter than any other variation.
It is also the safest variation to use. Reason being compared to other variations of roundhouse kick, it has minimal impact on your posture and balance. The snapping of the lower leg also makes it difficult to catch and hold on to.
This technique is usable in knockdown Karate, Muay Thai, Kickboxing, MMA, self-defense and many other similar contexts.

I was waiting for this tutorial, you went ahead and made it in depth, thanks a lot for your efforts, I requested this lead leg kick tutorial and you said it's your favourite kick, glad we feel the same, these are remarkable

Yes indeed I’m happy you liked it! I thought instead of only making a lead leg video it might be better to make a video about the whole kick in depth 🙏🏻 Thank you for the suggestion and for watching!

@@SaikouKarate again thank you for this detailed video, btw can you also make a video on various punches involved in kyokushin? And how you people train them including head punches because it's not allowed to punch to the head but it's something anyone would skip in training Thanks in advance

I was instructed to always utilize the keikotsu when performing mawashy gery, no matter the technique-jodan, chudan, or gedan.
@SaikouKarate
@SaikouKarate Год назад
The main reason for using keikotsu is that it's a very sturdy bone and it has a much lower chance of breaking when colliding with hard surfaces (such as your opponent's shin, elbow joint etc), but when kicking the head there is not really any such hard surface to worry about. Therefore it's better to kick with the top of the foot, which gives you a (literal) foot more of range, which also translates to more leverage -> force.

Questions: does kyokushin karate also have a version of the mawashi geri where you fully spin around? This 45 degree angle kick looks really good with the front foot. But to me feels awkward from the rear leg.
@SaikouKarate
@SaikouKarate 2 года назад
Spinning around is considered to be improper form for mawashi geri since you dangerously expose your back and it doesn’t really add anything significant to it due to the mechanics of power generation in the kick being mostly based on chambering correctly rather than a building momentum in a wide swinging trajectory like Muay Thai for example. It’s definitely difficult but very rewarding to attain the level of balance and control required to throw it smoothly off the rear leg. I recommend the standing alternating kick drill from the video. If the issue is you are losing balance in either direction, try to adjust your lean in the opposing direction - correct it incrementally and you will notice improvement fast.

Look up: Kyokushin speed round kick tutorial on RU-vid. Incredible speed and power off the back leg. Kenji Midori is demonstrating.
@SaikouKarate
@SaikouKarate 2 года назад
@@kbeldenkb He was and is indeed incredibly talented and skilled with his kicks. And for sure in tameshi wari it's not uncommon to commit more. But in modern dojos, spinning around after mawashi geri is not taught in any kihon, even within Shinkyokushinkai (midoris org). However with Sankaku geri (brazilian / question mark kick) there is a common variation that does include turning your back.

Question: If I hit my opponent with this to the head, does it count as a point or do I still have to knock him down with it?
@SaikouKarate
@SaikouKarate 2 года назад
Hey, it should cause visible damage :-) doesn't have to be a knockdown but can also be stumbling or holding the head in pain.

Lord it already took a ton of practice and stretching (lord I hate stretching!) just to do a Mawashi & Yoko Geri to the chest of my class mates that are 5'9. Ugggh well at least I'll practice these at Chudan level.

What makes your method of switch kick different from a pendulum kick
@SaikouKarate
@SaikouKarate 2 года назад
A pendulum kick as I know it doesn't utilize a switch step but rather a committed skip-in type step. More akin to 4:56 in this video :)

@@giovelazquez8872 For a rear roundhouse kick, if you have a correct fighting stance (kamae dachi), your hips should already be rotated as to be loaded :) It's the lead leg that needs a subtle loading of the hips to be fully effective.
