Upon his arrival in Antananarivo, the country’s capital, The Aga Khan was welcomed as a State Guest by the President of the Senate, Rajemison Rakotomaharo. During his four day stay,The Aga Khan held meetings with President of the Republic, Marc Ravalomanana; the Prime Minister, Charles Rabemananjara; and other senior government officials. Travelling to the north of the country, The Aga Khan visited the Sofia region where the Aga Khan Foundation’s rural development programme has helped villagers to multiply their yields of rice, in some cases by up to six times. Speaking to the villagers, The Aga Khan indicated that the AKDN plans to increase its activities in Sofia as well as other parts of the country and will diversify into other areas of endeavour, such as health, education and housing. On his return to the capital, The Aga Khan visited the Rova or Palace of Antananarivo, a cultural monument representing over four centuries of the country’s history. On the following day, The Aga Khan visited the offices of the Aga Khan Agency for Microfinance.
