I once herd that "all Welshman think they can sing........ and 99% of them can". Its so true. My grandfather was from Wales and he passed when I was about 3 (about 40 years ago) but I used to listened to a lp he left, "Max Boyce Live at Treorchy". Wonderful songs some funny and some sad but all from the heart. ❤

One of the most moving renditions I heard of this song was at a working men's club in Caernarvon, in 1990. My brother's band was playing a dance, and at the end of the evening an old fella took the microphone and sang this song. Not very well, but with great feeling.

This is not a tale of a nation BUT of the 100'000's up and down 🇬🇧 who went underground to do the dirty work that powered the industrial revolution. Many died and suffered poor health and all they wanted a fair days pays for a day's work and a vibrant community to bring their families up. Many of those communities are still trying to find a purpose decades later. This was a failure of Government (all parties), poor Management and Intransigent Unions. All failed to protect those that worked so hard! Listen and reflect, this could be Bargoed, Balmore or Barnsley!

It is a beautiful and a poetic song, Max Boyce at his eloquent best. But there's some false memory here. Those of us who grew up in Wales when the mines were struggling, and who were lucky enough to read the tragic novels of Richard Llewellyn and (especially) Alexander Cordell, know that coal mining was a curse and that the Welsh are well rid of the fear and the "mining souvenirs."

I’m English, and I’ve loved listening to Max Boyce since I was a kid. Max is a Bard and a gentleman. This song fills me up every time I hear it. I knock out the melody on my harmonica and it still moves me. And when I look at what the English have done over the centuries to the other peoples we share this island with, well... it’s no wonder there’s resentment. Anyway, Cymru am byth!
