After Max's surprise refusal to get in the trailer at the clinic last week, I decided to give him a session at home so that doesn't happen again!

Love following you, Matt. Always interested in the events and your horses. Wish I had this video when I was 13 years old trying to load my horse for the 4-H shows. Keep up your great work spreading kind horsemanship. Much success.

We knew this was coming😊 I love that you reference Warwick, he’s another one of my favorites! Best thing I think I heard you say was once you get a little progress like this, don’t get greedy, and stand there and him a break. It’s also great to see that you are setting aside plenty of time to work on this and you realize it could take all day. Several days, weeks even. For some people and some horses. Another saying I like is “ the slow way IS the fast way” & “ Take the time it takes so that it takes less time” Max just always seems like a sweetheart, and all the videos I’ve ever seen of him. Thanks Matt🙏🏼

Good job Matt. It’s nice to see the trainers have to deal with this issue now and then like the rest of us.I used the same technique for a horse I adopted off the track. She went through a short phase where she didn’t want to go into the round pen to be worked. She would plant her feet or pop up a little bit. She’s 16.2 hands so I certainly couldn’t muscle her into the round pen if she didn’t want to go.So, I would put her on a small trot circle swinging the lead rope and changing directions. I made her do circles back-and-forth a few times. Then she would walk in the round pen. I only had to do this on two occasions before the behavior stopped all together and it never came up again. Make the right thing easy and the wrong thing hard… It really works.

My horse has no problem with the trailer, but she didn't understand how to go over a bridge without getting stuck backing off. I used the concepts in the video to help teach her she needs to go ALL the way over. We're ready for our ranch trail class now :)

All my horses are different in trailer loading. One gelding took me weeks of work getting him comfortable loading. He’s a thinker, and the trailer I own is quite small. I worked on making it his idea and making sure I start my training when he’s in a good calm mind set. Sending him, and releasing pressure when moving forward. If he backed out I’d let him, but apply pressure immediately asking to load again.

Lol lol I knew you'd get back here with MAX and the trailer thing! Oh how I know how you must have felt in that parking lot!!! Especially from a horse of his caliber. Must say I like that approach if you remember to watch your feet!! A great tip! Also that braid job was beautifully done whoever did that. And now it's ok cause he's a gelding! Lol! Thx as always Matt for all you share. Catcha next one...

You’re acting like you have never seen a trailer before. And of course, now I am going to stand here watching you finally load for someone else.🙄Thanks a lot, Max. NOT!! One less treat🥕 for you, bub, when we get home! You will go straight to your stall and stay there!!”😂

Ya Warkick is the MAN. However you have him going from a dim stall block to the bright sunlight yeah? so horses eye rods can take up to 30 minutes to adjust from bright light to dark area. So you should have the trailer door open facing the sunlight so it floods the doorway and lighting up the doorway. That is a very narrow tralier system. If you are re training him, surely to get Max to answer yes to all the questions, you ask the YES questions... Start his training with a float then a truck etc so by the end he can walk into the truck doorway which is the space for a human. break it down

I took my barrel horse to a jack pot and came off the trailer bad and it really got him scared. So a week later another jack pot was going on and he wouldn’t load up. He reared and that is something he doesn’t do. And he doesn’t like to be pressured or doesn’t like to be forced. So I think I’ll use this method because it seems it’ll take time but at least I’m getting this type of training from a professional trainer

@@mattmillsreining1 when I was younger I worked at a thoroughbred Farm that thank God is no longer in business but because I have Standardbred background I always got the oddballs the Arabians that raced even the little quarter horses and it was a policy that even on a hot Walker we had to use a lip rope I hated it I don't like to hurt an animal at all. I really don't like giving them four Acepromazine either just to walk in a hot ring. I like what you do Matt you do work with the horse instead of against which is most important. Their body language will tell you just like when their whole body tightens up when a horse fly lands. Nothing worked for Mismatch, it all stemed from some idiot who wasn't patient mismatch was just two as in January he was hit on his sighted side to try to make him come out of the stall faster to hook up with company which means you go out on the track with more than one horse that was a nightmare! because he ended up scared for life and he ran into a big Abercrombie stud Colt from Canada who is in the cross ties and broke the Abercrombie Colts halter. The only thing that worked was a slant load and you better have a tight grip on his left side because he would also run out and hop over the ramp he was blind on his left side he was very dangerous and nearly killed at least two people not on purpose but just because he couldn't see and he was scared.

on a completely different and left field note.... these quarter horses aren't very big/tall.. you're a pretty big guy.... i would usually always apply a ratio- (hands to height) for ridabiltiy...yet Max seems so short when i size you up next to him. Even as a chick i would look at a horse by where my legs are at on him/her when on them as so whether they are too small or too tall for me to ride. I am beginning to think Quarter horse/western style riding might be not just a bit different but a LOT different than English. Don't get me wrong, I am OVER OTTB and English style riding and tack... U.S. style seem so much more comfortable, relaxed etc if on the correct horse.
