It was heaaaavily implied that Scorpion wanted some solo revenge, and Raiden already told Cole that Sub Zero killed Hanzos family and his hate/need for revenge sent him to hell to find power and a way to return. MK 95- 8.5/10 MK 97- 5/10 MK 21- 3.5/10 Rayden is suposed to be a 7 ft Caucasian, not a 5 ft Mongoloid. LOL Liu Kang shouldnt look like a girl. Robin Shou looked like a man. Shang Tsung is not scary at all with those chubby cheeks. Tagawa was so much better. Sub Zeros and Scorpions costume was bad. Yellow and blue are barely recognizable. I hoped MK 21 was going to look something like MK LEGACY witch was very good, but it was nothing like it. MK 21 is not a movie you can watch twice, it would be too painfull.

It was panned at the time it came out. Over time it has been praised and well liked due to nostalgia. People are comparing lui kang do they want an accurate lui kang as he’s written in the games or do they want Robin shou who is a badass who made the character his own.

We can't say it's Lewis Tan because that's just studio stupid creative decision to put characters that the audience could relate because we had Kano for this movie and Johnny for the previous one. Heck, based on interviews, he's one of the more knowledgeable about the source material next to Joe. We can't fault Simon McQuaid because even if this is his first time as the director, some of his direction is actually pretty good and it's like what Paul W. S. Anderson were doing with MK 1995. The problem is why are the screenwriters were the people who also wrote for Wonder Woman 1984 and Death Note 2? Huh... what? Like, seriously the only reason why the script even has some nods and references to the game because Oren Uziel (MK: Legacy & MK: Rebirth) was one of them.

This was my problem with the movie. They wasted a lot of the characters, didn't give us a reason to care. Reptile, Nitara, Reiko, 1 dimentional and without any lines, no reason to care who they were or what their motives are. Mileena showed very little personality. Kabal was a good shit talker, but not as good as Kano and only hint at their back story. Not even told why Shang Tsung is the big bad.

Reptiles name is syzoth. The amount of people who don't know this haha. I don't blame them though. His real name has been hidden so long

The fact that they hype Nitara only for her to be cut from the action, Reptile's invisible fight looking like they're slapping air, or Reiko looking like a Shao Kahn brute that doesn't talk. Like, come on... And again, we can't fault everything on the cast and crew here. Not only do they have a budget, but they also have limited time. For example, in a few deleted scenes that didn't made the full cut, there's a scene after Reptile's demise showing a conversation between Shang Tsung and Mileena and I hate the fact that it got cut. It tells us not only a bit about Mileena's backstory, but also Shang Tsung's demeanor. Heck, there's also a scene where Liu Kang and Kung Lao were meeting Raiden at the Garden and that bit actually shows that Raiden really have some hopes with the Earthrealm warriors. Runtime crippled this movie badly.

I would have hated that. I want Scorpion to be his own entity and not have to posses a person. Heck I'm not even a fan of Cole being related to him. I don't even dislike Cole, I just feel making the MK tournament be about Scoprion and Sub-Zero let alone having a descendant as a plot point was weird. Like obviously we have to have Scorpion and Bi-Han fight but they weren't the main plot point in the first 3 games, they were a bonus sub-plot in the background of the main plot.

That movie is the reason Liu Kang is one of my favorite MK characters. He had personality, a character arc and you felt like and the other characters grew to like each other. There was none of that in the new movie. He’s super bland in that one .

Yoo Fr! The last fight was nicely done. Not over the top but basically the best thing in the movie mostly because of Scorpion and Sub Zero. The rest of the fights were absolutely awful. Kabal was nice though

Cole's big character arc as presented is definitely that he is a quitter when things get tough. In his MMA fight he had the upper hand for quite a bit, but then when he got put in a unfavorable position he tapped out. He was beating Kung Lao, but then Kung Lao used his hat and Cole gave up. The arcana training wasn't going his way and despite this being a world ending event, he gives up and goes home. His arcana only activated when he was finally pushed into a situation where he finally decided that he was done running away. It isn't the worst character arc, but the movie does very little to make us care about Cole or his arc.

At first I thought that perhaps the armor absorbed kinetic energy from being hit, building up energy that he could then redirect into his own unarmed attacks to make them stronger. But then he got the tonfa blades and just used those so I guess it was just plot armor.

This honestly would have been a lot better as a Netflix show, they would have had a lot more time to flesh out the characters and the world of MK.

The director has ambition and wants to make it, hey. Least give him the sequel to do better ... but for fucks sake ... give the writer a 9 to 5 so he can never write craptastic stuff when the direction has so much potential. Give him the sequel and let him wrap it up and go for the TV series. Look at The Witcher. far better potential for a proper narrative from episode to episode. We had that example with the Legacy web series and it was working out nicely, even if it gave up most of the super natural stuff. The movie was great overall but it's all down nitpicks because from person to person, you see different stuff being said.

Definitely. So many of the villains were so terrible because they were one/no-line jobbers. A single episode focused on them would've made them actual characters.

What's confusing is Cole understanding Japanese. Scorpion said "leave him to me" in japanese and Cole then left the camera to allow Scorpion to fight Subzero.

This was my take too - it definitely seemed like Scorpion was watching or observing in some fashion. Figuring out English seems feasible. Not speaking any more after saying the line was weird.

Honestly it would have been just as bad had NR been involved, possibly even worse. Go back and watch the story modes for 9-11. Really pay attention and analyze the writing. You'll see that what they did was really, really bad as well. If you're not up for that check out the 4thSnake's videos on MK9-10's story writing. He hasn't done all of 11 yet because he's waiting for all the dlc to be finished so he can make a full analysis of the game.

He is pretty much written as the audience POV character. At times you honestly forget that Cole even is in the Movie. You can clearly tell that Cole was a Studio mandated character, because the writers had no idea what to do with him, yet Kano gets a lot of love and attention and is the one who keeps asking questions.

That sounds 200% better

Or just make the Main character Takeda. And Cole doesn't exist, the scorpion blood line can work that way.

I remember a review talking about how awesome it was to see sub-zero attacking a family in mc donalds and when I saw the movie I was like "that's just some aggressive snow" not sure what's awesome about that.

Thought the exact same thing, I was expecting to see people being destroyed by the ice but I only saw one guy get conked on the head. 🤣🤦🏾‍♂️
