To be fair about the social science education in the country - I took Sociology for ISC in 11th. In chennai - my teacher was a feminist mallu syriac christian. While the assigned reading was pretty bland and cursory - she was the one who made us think about castes amongst all religions in India, including the Abrahamic ones.... She gave examples of how within the same Mallu Christian sects (there are many), jaati identities trumped Church affiliation and even social class when it came to marriage etc.

I was exposed to people in the obsessive UPSC-or-bust culture... they used to look up to a guy who had failed the exam some 8 times and didn't have any other job, because apparently that was an exemplar of dedication. Matlab, basically some guy who was a bigger loser than them, ended up validating their own life choices of not seeking a job for years on end.
