Dennis, been watching your vids for years! Bought this reel used (GREAT price, less the half) from a buddy, in immaculate condition. His only complaint, freezes up in very cold weather. I immediately thought I knew problem and gladly bought it from him. Having never worked on a Maxel, was SUPER happy to see you had a video for this model!!! Using your (always excellent) video, I tore it down. As expected, found a lot of sticky translucent grease in there, that I bet froze in very cold weather. Cleaned it all up w help of your vid. Lubed w penn grease n reel x. Smoother then ever!!! Thanks so much, for yet another great video!! Hope you know how many people you help with these. Thanks again.
I think the closest you can come is a small frame Avet, but the design is different. Braid has made these small format reels possible and they are fun to fish with here on the east coast. Dennis
Thanks fo rate kind words. Yes it is a lot of reel in that frame and quite a design. I like to show different designs of reels. I'm always amazed at how many ways you can make a big gear turn a little one. Best wishes - Dennis
Maxes is not a brand I am familiar with. Also I don’t think I’ve seen a conventional reel that s so narrow. It certainly has a large gear! This is not a reel that I can use but it is very interesting. Very fine video Dennis! Oh, I got my Penn 105 Silver Series reel this afternoon. I had to build a spool clicker spring for it but other than that the reel is in excellent condition both mechanically and cosmetically. It was even larger than I expected. It’s very smooth and clean.
Have you had any issues with this reel? I have the hy20l and it's crunchy. The thumb bar sticks sometimes won't close sometimes won't open. My buddy serviced it last year and was better for a little and then same problem.
I read somewhere that they should run dry, so I stopped adding grease then. The only time I do it now is when the bearings are frozen or gummy and I only use a penetrating oil at that point. I use it more as a cleaner that a lubricant - Best wishes - Dennis
This reel seems kind complicated to break down for frequent cleaning. More over the screws inside look like a potential place for rust to set in. Otherwise it looks like a dandy small reel for jigging or even live bait fishing with 30-40lb braid to 20-30 lb fluo leader. Wonder how it cast an anchovie.
This is a nice reel. They packed a lot into that frame. I agree, those screws could be a problem if you don't service the reel and keep it clean. Best wishes - Dennis
Hi Dennis can you rebuild a Pflueger bond 2000 I can’t find anything on the internet and don’t won’t to take apart mine before I see what I see how complicated it will be.
