I'm a maximalist, my late sister called my apartment the museum .Some call it clutter. I have a sign that says it's not clutter, it's the evidence of life. I live. It's also cozy.

I don't think Maximalism is only a look. Because although the items are purchased, it's (in my opinion) not a style you can buy "all at once". It evolves. It's curated. Each piece has a story, a purpose even if it's just decorative. Me personally I can tell a story about each item in my home. "Oh it's from a fleamarket in summer, I remember the nice vendor who sold me this picture. Look, on the back is an interesting stamp from a gallery. So fun!" In my opinion you can design a space to have the potential to turn into multilayered maximalism, but it's not possible to have it store bought. That's where I see where the influencers will struggle =D

Im glad maximalism is coming back and the reason is because there are all these great things and treasures out there of our parents and grandparents that the minimalist just takes to the dump which is SOOO sad!! My son is a maximalist. He moved in to his grandmother’s house after she had to leave due to dementia. It was so nice to see someone as young as he was who embraced all of her treasures. Needless to say he has added many of his own things but I am so glad her stuff didn’t end up being tossed out. I am an only child and her daughter but I tend to lean more towards minimalism and did not really want anything of hers but he did and I am so thankful. When I go visit him it’s so much fun to still see the things of hers and all that he has added to it he is only 29 years old. I know so many people who have A house full of beautiful things who say their children have absolutely no interest in any of it , it’s so sad. Instead they just want IKEA type furnishings.

I love watching videos on minimalism because it fascinates me how people can live such utilitarian existences. The lack of art or bric-a-brac makes me a little sad. They also tend to be preachy about consumerism while using uber expensive furniture and appliances, not to mention finishes. To me it’s a humble brag about living with less, but at a very high price point. While at the same time emphasizing an IKEA “hack” to show good design can be affordable. So glad I now have a style language that expresses comfort, fun and a well lived life.

As with most assumptions made by people who judge people they have never met, you're wrong in general. I have never been preachy or lacked for art or led a utilitarian existence. My art is on my walls and sofa...they're called quilts that I have made. More art is on the walls that is called family photos. Bric-a-brac is on the bookshelf showing places I have traveled to as well as more family photos. There is not one thing in my home that you would consider expensive. I am quite comfortable in my home and as for fun, instead of dusting all that stuff, I'd rather go out and enjoy my well-lived life. I'm sorry that for fun you prefer to watch videos that you can criticize. That's what I find sad. That and your judgementalism.

I split up with my husband in April and moved into a minimal mid-century furnished apartment and have been finally able to put out my collection of family heirlooms as well as art that has been painted by myself and family and friends. I did my best to have blank surfaces and walls for the last 6 months but now I'm embracing my maximalist tendencies (an inherited trait passed on from my family down to me.) My son recently made a tablescape of sketchbooks and other things important to him on the coffee table where he works on his computer, he's taking a digital painting course online. Yes, maximalism is a mindset... not a style. I've fought my own maximalist tendencies for most of my adult life, but as of late, I've learned to embrace it. I've collected very specific things for a very long time, and a maximalist mindset is the best way to approach one's space if you enjoy acquiring "bits of history" along the way. I collect architectural prints and models, stone obelisks, antique boxes, books, and Jasperware. I no longer hide my obsessions... I simply decorate around what I own, and that way everyone gets to enjoy them when they visit! Fair warning, however... dusting is key, and it helps to have a curator's eye. If not, you risk looking like a hoarder in need of an intervention.

I very much appreciated your discussion on embracing color, texture, art, books, collections, that have been missing from design for too long. Every RU-vidr who filmed their homes looked like everyone else's. All white, natural colors, few objects, beautiful but oh so boring. Even most interior design books embraced the minimalist look. As pretty as these homes were, I could never imagine living with so little personality. My only complaint about your video was that you quickly posted photos of grand examples of the maximalist look giving us little time to savor the design. It would have been particularly exciting if you actually toured one or more of these homes discussing the look as our eyes wandered around. Perhaps that is fitting for another video on the topic. Having viewed tours of so many dreary homes I am craving viewing color again.

Well said! I'm another who cannot stand boring when we have so much to choose from but some people will choose "Safe" designs and furniture styles. My thing is why do we have an array of colors, textures, furniture, etc to choose from but choose subtlety? I understand why some people chose minimalism because of excess, caring about the environment, less consumerism, etc. but I feel you can choose what's really important in designing your home while incorporating that instead of living in a mostly empty, drabby home.

Love this video. One tip for the gallery wall, since we don't all collect everything at once, we must use creativity to hang up items that come to our collection at different times, hang it up and "live" with it for a couple of days, and see how you love it or don't then reposition. Most of the time you won't have to redo the entire wall, that would be very fastidious ha. Also add texture pieces, candlesticks, clocks, etc etc. soooo comforting. I find it amusing that anyone has to actually work to achieve the effect of "organized clutter." I always thought minimalism was soulless, and my style has always been, "I like this, so where in the heck am I gonna put it?" The only real effort is squeezing it all in and trying not to break a leg.

I’m here searching youtube for videos to help me with my current high anxiety. I have things. I’m not a cluttered person, very organized, and I USE everything I have - be it books, art, craft supplies, clothing. But I’m about to move to another state, after a decade working overseas. I have storage from before, and storage from after, and storage from the last few years back in the states, waiting to get back where I want to live. Now I have to consolidate it all in one place, and do it ALONE, and I can’t stop ruminating about it, feeling guilting for owning things, irritable and a tad whiny about not having help (and multiple prior instances of movers breaking my belongings - always something valuable or antique)… but it’s my life. I just hate having to move alone, knowing it’s only being consolidated into another single storage unit instead of into a HOME… yet. But my things are my history and things I love and want around me again. Everything has a story. None of it is junk. I currently live temporarily with my elderly mother, who is a hoarder, and the more she refuses to organize, clean up or purge, throw away trash, ANYTHING… the more I feel anxiety and feel BAD about my own life. The life I don’t get to live, because I’m still not back in my own space again. I just need to hear enough people unapologetically saying it’s OKAY to have a home and a life, like this. Even if our decor style isn’t “maximalist”. There’s nothing wrong with wanting a world and a life, but the current “minimalist” thing in society really makes it seem like we’re somehow bad for loving our books, loving our collection of persian rugs. Like there’s something wrong with you for owning your own tools for regular use. I need to stop feeling like this and don’t feel like it’s fair that I Should have to get rid of everything I value and love, in order to be acceptable to onlookers, and feel less stress myself at moving.

I really like the way you approach maximalism. For a long time, I saw it as demanding. Needing large natural lights to pull off such a moody darkness, needing wealth to populate it, needing it's own dusting schedule. But now I'm at a point in my life where I can't deny that discovering trinkets and treasures is a lifelong enjoyment. And collecting what makes me smile doesn't have to be limited to one to one swapping. Maximalism is not another word for eclectic. You can be an eclectic minimalist. A living room with a post modernist sofa, an African stool, and a baroque coffee table and nothing else would be a minimalist eclectic look.
@ribbrascal
@ribbrascal Год назад
True but maximalism really excels when the style is eclectic rather than uniform. Like maximalist French country or maximalist industrial or maximalist art deco would be cool but not as cool as maximalist exclectic that incorporated those different elements. Don't ask me why, it's just my innate design sense speaking here

THANK YOU for putting a name to my eclectic home. I recently moved into a 964 sq. ft. 1 story condo. I have 2 vintage arm chairs, a 6 ft. crunch and 2 reclining chairs in a small living room. Most of these pieces were my parents'. I had them recovered so the fabrics pull them together. I've been wondering what to do with all my pictures, including my own art work. You have just given me permission to put it all out! Fantastic! Worried about all those nail holes? Don't forget about command hooks for smaller pieces, wiring, etc.

Hey again Brooklyn, NYC! Maximalism is definitely not for me but I can use more color here and there. I do love my books though and I have them everywhere. Cookbooks in the kitchen, my favorite coffee table books in the living room, children's books in bedrooms, etc... I am fortunate enough to have a formal library in my home and of course there are books galore there. I can definitly use a gallery wall though. I never thought to do it before because the ones I've seen always look so messy. I am literally taking notes so that I can plan this out. Another great video.

Hey Brooklyn!! A home to feel homey Awe I'm so glad that the gallery wall tips helped! I have one of just frames and that is how I plan and hang. Perfect everytime! Thank you again for watching! We have a saying here in Sweden that translated into english basically says "if there's heart-room there's butt-room" meaning we can squeeze in to make it work if we love it (or to make sure everyone can have a seat when there are lots of people, like a 3 seat couch can fit 4 if you want to give up some space)

No one ever talks about optimalism. I'm not being sarcastic. IMO there is an optimum space ... where comfort and visual interest reside alongside restraint.... meaningful art and objects without the excess. Well edited to form a coherent composition. On one hand vignettes to delight the eye while, on the other, breathing spaces allow for the eye to rest.

Eclectic maximalism is my jam! Over half of my furnishings I have found discarded on the sidewalks of my street and in my neighborhood. I'm honestly so chuffed with my genius sense of design. The key for making any design style work but especially this one is lighting. For me that means using "accent" and "task" lighting as a collective for the ambient lighting and all different kinds of colored and soft white light fixtures: black lights with shades, string lights, led strips, salt lamps, essential oil diffuser, colored globe lights, electric candles. So funky and sexy. Yes I love R&B! I also removed the tv from the living room, which I made a reading-music-chill room. I put my (small) tv on a small shelving unit in the center of my bedroom right next to my bed with a huge comfy seat close to it as my media station.

Oooh, those pictures kind of made me stress tf out.. By all means, I love when Others can decorate Their own homes like this, But, it's not for me. I was collecting antiquities for over a decade and once I started decluttering I never stopped. It changed my perspective for the better. I love stuff, but it came to a certain point whereas I just had too much.. Broken things that needed repairing, things that was in bad shape and sfuff that was in the way.. No thank you. I keep only the necessities. I absolutely love my blank white walls and I wouldn't like to hang up anything, be it lamps or art. To each their own. I personally have soooo so much stuff and I'm really happy each time I get to sell something and get rid of those items. Rid of items, money in my savings account, win win. Minimalism is not for everyone, but neither is maximalism. Minimalism is just a tool really, to minimize all that doesn't serve you (what you don't need, what's in the way, negativity; job, people, so on and so on).

I’m so bored of minimalism! I’m not a full-on maximalist but I really like to surround myself with colour, and I like a room to have layers to it rather than flat, dull planes. (If I never see white walls and plywood built-ins again…) I watch a lot of small space videos and while the space planning is often ingenious, I’m like…where’s the fun? Where’s the texture, the colour, the individuality? I think if your space is very organised & has places for the eye to rest, you can really have fun with making it expressive, memorable and personal.

I'm here above all for ideas, to figure out what I like and what I don't. I am not a minimalist, although a nice little Japanese garden, or a nice Japanese flower arrangement, a big Japanese fan on the wall - with relatively minimal, wabi-sabi-ish furniture to complement that corner, would work for me. On the other hand, I would not want to go all-out minimalist either. I do have a maximalist side. I think, though, that given the absurdly large size of some of the furniture I'd like to have (think: Neogothic dining room chairs with six-foot-high backs and a massive, Gothic-inspired but irregularly shaped table), I might need to be careful not to go too maximialist, so that it doesn't end up looking cluttered and crowded. I've seen another variant on your method of planning an art wall, namely to lay out the actual works on the floor - obviously, with the outer boundaries of the art wall space indicated in some way on the floor. That said, my issue with an art wall is that I tend to prefer 3D rather than 2D art. I'm thinking of, say, a huge wall unit with spaces left in it to house sculptures, lamps, plants...

I am sort of in between lol However, I lean more to max. I'm a plant lover so I think that contributes to a max look. I also feel that max homes are more realistic. And looks like someone actually lives theres. Versus the minimal, showy home that you are afraid to walk or touch anything. LOVELY VIDEO 🤩⭐

The "minimalist" mindset I think we share is more "intentionalist". Which minimalism, surprisingly to some, doesn't have the monopoly on. The minimalist tenants of buying only what makes you happy or has use, buying economically and resource consciously, and curating spaces that feel purposeful and calming.. these are all things that are reflected in maximalism as well, just approached from a different direction. I'm a maximalist, but everything in my home makes me happy, is expressive, artistic, and very carefully and patiently acquired over a long time. Econimically? I thrift, I antique, I follow auctions. Stress? I will declutter and happily gift, donate, and sell possessions that no longer suit me. It's not a stressful obsession, it's a hobby and it doesn't subsume my life. It's a decorative style that reflects my personality and allows me to feel "at home", but it shouldn't be the totality of my life philosophy. Extremists on either side will look at the others' space and find fault with it, because they attach so much of their mental state to consumerism- be it a rejection of of or an overabundance of. But rational minimalists can see the difference between a carefully curated but bold living space and "hoarding", just as a rational maximalist can appreciate values of minimalism and encorporate them into disciplining their indulgences.

This may sound insane, but one day I hope to have my own steampunk maximalist tiny house. At least one of the walls will have a wallpaper i designed (thank you Spoonflower) with a bunch of paintings, prints, whatever catches catches my fancy. I've got the main floorplan/layout all planned out and a color pallet to mostly stick to. I've always loved small spaces and lots of things to look at. I can see so clearly in my mind the possibilities of the space and its gonna be amazing! A lotta people avoid lots of things on walls when dealing with a tiny house to make a space seem larger, but i never felt that "larger" or "smaller" feeling from just lighter or darker colors

@ribbrascal

I get what you're saying. A white background can make maximalism seem jumbled while a colored wall brings a coherent grounded background to maximalism. For white walls to work with maximalism, the color palette of the furnishings and the rhythm of the palette throughout the room should be especially carefully considered.
