Maximize Conversion Value Bidding Strategy Explained

In this video I am going to break down the maximize conversion value bidding strategy. It could be the best bidding strategy you could ever pick if your business makes sales online and you have a high enough volume of transactions for Google to get good data to optimize for this strategy.
I am going to break down how this strategy works, what to expect and when to use it.
What is Maximize Conversion Value Bidding?
Firstly it’s important to understand exactly what this bid strategy is and what it is trying to achieve. The maximize conversion value bid strategy is essentially giving Google’s machine learning the objective of getting the highest value of conversions possible for your budget.
That doesn’t mean focusing on only high value transactions, but it means simply getting the most value in terms of revenue from your campaign budget. So say for example if you had a campaign with 2 products with 2 transaction values. Product 1 has a value of $10 dollars and product 2 has a transaction value of $300.
Google won’t be biased towards a particular budget based on the value alone of each product, but they will be biased to the performance of the products in terms of campaign budget vs total transaction value.
So even if product 2 has a transaction value of $300, if Google determines it can get more transaction total value at campaign level from promoting keywords that generate sales of the smaller $10 product 1, then that’s what it would do. It simply wants to get as much value as possible regardless of product.
When to use Maximize Conversion Value
The usual smart bidding caveats exist. Your campaign need a good level of transaction volumes. If your campaign gets less than 30 transactions per month, then smart bidding probably isn’t going to work very well for you. And of course, the more transactions you make per month on average, the better!
You also shouldn’t be budget restricted, because again that will hinder Google’ machine learning.
But all things being positive, Google will raise or lower your bids at auction time depending on the user profile of the person searching, including the device, location, time of day, and dozens of other factors.
You can also add a layer of additional control by chosing a target return on advertising spend (target roas)
I have done a video on the target ROAS bid strategy so that’s in the description below
Target ROAS Explained
• Target ROAS in Google ...
What that means is that you can ensure that your business goals can still be met. If you require a specific return on your ad spend, you can lock that into your bidding strategy, but still allow Google to go out there and get as much bang for your buck as possible, which is why this is such a powerful bidding strategy.
So when should you leverage this strategy
Of course, your campaign conversions need to have a value, meaning you sell something online and there is a specific transaction value. If you’re setting up a new campaign, Google can take a long time to figure out what bid levels lead to a sale, so I would often advise you start with manual CPC in the first instance to gather data for a month.
Once you’re confident you’ve got enough data and have control over your CPC’s then you can transition to a target ROAS or a Maximize Conversion Value strategy.
Because you can work to a target ROAS with a maximize conversion value, it makes sense to choose this strategy first when choosing a revenue based bidding strategy.
Summary
Maximize Conversion Value in my opinion is the best smart bidding strategy for revenue based campaigns where you measure the value of conversions. Because you can layer it with a target ROAS, it can give you control but also flexibility.

Always great videos. Two questions. 1. In a 30-day of testing another bid strategy, how many conversions in average are needed for Google to learn my campaign's data? 2. In a case scenario you have enough conversions and you change to Max Conversion strategy, how long it takes to the algorithm to speed up and generate conversions? We are in Q4 and these decisions must be taken very carefully. Thanks and keep it up :)

Thanks, appreciate the support. To answer you questions, Google say 30 at minimum, but I would say 50, especially for revenue based strategies. More than 1 per day in reality. Within 2 weeks you should start to see what the strategy is doing, but give it 30 days.

Hey TBM, I'd love to hear your advice on this. I have a Conversion Action Set in place, containing 5 conversions, each pertaining to an action or sale. For every sale, the amount flows from the purchase price on the Web site into Google Analytics and then into Google Ads (where the daily currency exchange rate gets applied and converts the sale in Analytics into the currency of the Ads account). One conversion has Conv Value of 0 (as it's just a registration, but can be useful when using Target CPA to get as many registrations at a certain price); but all other conversions have a value related to the nature of the sale, for example, an Initial sale (which can vary in price depending on sales), a Rebill (monthly subscription, typically at a lower price then the Initial sale), then the others pertain to Refunds and therefore have a negative Conv Value. So the sum total of the Conversion Action Set is applied to each Ad to determine its true value taking into account refunds. How does Max Conv Value work against this? For example, does it determine which of the 5 conversions return the most money and go for those (like Initial sales), but then avoid situations which include a Refund transaction at the same time, to again maximise the conversion value. But if registrations always has a hardcoded Conv Value of 0 how does this affect things, because free registrations are a necessary first step before the Initial sale can occur. Love to hear from you and thank you!
@darrentaylordigital

It's going to focus on conversion value above all else. Google is going to do everything it can to fulfil this statement. "how can I generate the most revenue in this campaign for this budget, using ALL conversion data that feeds into the conversion value figure" So it would ignore conversions that don't attribute to revenue, focusing on optimising towards the conversions that deliver. It could determine that 5 small sales add more value for your budget than 1 big sale, or visa versa. Because registration is a first step, all sales will have that signal in common, so likelihood of the click to turn into a free registration could affect the bids at auction. But ultimately, it's going to focus on conversions with a value

The Big Marketer - PPC & SEO thanks so much and for the fast reply. I like this and glad it will basically focus on which conversions in the action set that contribute the greatest value overall, and I guess it will avoid conversions with negative or 0 value. The initial sales amount may vary wildly but it will be 90% of overall conversion value, but all are important to include for accuracy. I’m very excited to see what my campaigns will do now that I’ve changed the settings. Thank you

Hello Darren, Thank you for this video! I have a question I hope you can guide me :) I have had my search campaign in max conv value for almost 4 weeks now. I received 48 conversions but the return on investment (con.value.cost) is low, I want to hit 400% tROAS and I'm halfway. Should I wait a bit longer until I'm happy with the performance? and then set up tROAS or what should I do? I've been pausing nonperforming keywords as well. Thank you.😀

Hi just wanted to ask when we set maximum conversion value bidding strategy we can layered our strategy with target ROAS thats fine but if it works better then by keeping both the aspects of conversions and return value what's the point of using maximum conversion value strategy without ROAS in any case can you give some example where its handy to use maximum conversion value bidding strategy without setting ROAS

If you have very expensive products it can be good. I have seen it work well when people have a big range of products. e.g. $20 product and a $3,000 product etc. if products and transaction value doesn't vary much, then it's better to focus on ROAS

Thanks for your video! With max conversion value bidding, does Google Ads push for max conversion value at virtually any cost, or is the cost and conversion value balanced to find the point where max conversion value is achieved but at the same time reducing bids to a point not so low that it cuts off traffic, also factoring in that there must be a maximum CPC that is just crazy high that profits are destroyed? In other words it effectively keeps trying to find the sweet spot bid range on a graph of "clicks achieved from bid amount' against 'conversion value' so the highest conversion value is achieved at optimal cost?
@darrentaylordigital
@darrentaylordigital 4 года назад
It will try and get the most revenue for your budget. So it knows how much is available to spend and it will try and find a sweet spot. You can control it with a target ROAS too if needed so you don't become less profitable if you test this strategy

@@darrentaylordigital Thank you again TBM. With Max Conv Value and a Target ROAS, in your experience, do you find that the strategy keeps pushing for higher Conv Value for same daily budget or does the strategy tend to hone in on the Target ROAS and then tends to stick around that point since the advertiser has essentially set the point at which they are 'happy' achieving, so if the campaign is meeting that minimum objective then there isn't really a motivation for the bidding system to keep lowering CPC? I know it's a subtle thing I'm asking but basically I was wondering how much the system tends to push depending if you leave in or leave out a Target ROAS?

You might assign a conversion a value of $5, so if you get 3 conversions that is valued at $15. If you set the values right you should get back more profit than you spend on ads I.e you make a return on your investment

Is the campaign conversion value good or not? How can i run more productive campaign ? Thank you.

If you're not getting good conversation volume of tracked conversion values, you need to revert to manual CPC, just for control purposes. Google doesn't have enough data to optimise with. Test and learn starting with gaining good visibility for target keywords. Then continue to optimise
