A short demo video for manual lymph drainage therapists working with postoperative plastic surgery patients.
This video shows the MLD protocol for someone that has had an adominoplasty procedure and I explain the process and reasons behind why I am doing this routine.
If you would like to learn more so you can work confidently and safely with postoperative patients to help reduce swelling and optimise their recovery and enhance the results of their procedure, then consider doing my advanced CPD accrediated online self-study training. You can check it out here: www.petraervin...
If you're not ready to invest in this training but want to know more about how to treat fibrosis, you can check out a self-study, short course about fibrosis here: www.petraervin...
Or if you would simply like to learn more about the lymphatic system and it's role in every aspect of a patient's recovery after surgery, check out the short, self-study course here: www.petraervin...
If you're a certified manual lymph drainage therapist and want to work with postop patients but aren't sure which direction you want to go, book a complimentary 30min call here: calendly.com/p...

Thank God I ran across your page. I’m relatively new and I was taught the Vodder method but when consulting others, they drain into the tummy tuck scar and I was taught differently. Thank you!

I had mine 3 months and my RN recommended it as a choice and I went to an RN to get this done and she did it just like in the video. It has helped so much with my swelling and my insurance covered it. I am not sure why these other lymphatic massages are not like this. But I did my research before getting one

I’m 100% with you on everything your doing including drainage upward to auxiliary nodes at TT incision. Question: when, if ever, do we resume the normal watershed direction (@belly button)?
@petraerving1854
@petraerving1854 3 года назад
Hi Julie, thanks for your comment. My opinion is that for the first 4 weeks, you direct towards axillary lymph nodes only. This will deal with the superficial swelling that cannot get through the scar tissue. There are of course deeper lymphatics that maybe able to find a route below the scar, through muscle to the inguinal nodes. So, I'd recommend incorporating drainage to both areas from about 4 weeks. Overtime, I've found that you start noticing little channels appear through the scar. However, bear in mind that the tissue that was below the original belly button, containing southwards draining lymphatics has been removed. So the majority of the 'new' tissue between belly button and incision would have originally drained to axilla anyway. I hope that helps.

Great info! Now there needs to be regulations in every state on the IG, online “body contouring” people..not medical, who offer post op ‘care’, lymphatic therapy l without being a medically trained nurse, medical aesthetician or licensed massage therapist… please contact your board and the plastic surgeon board to facilitate regulations. Lash techs in Maryland are NOW required due to these online certificates non-medically trained laypeople doing lashes! People were not having eye issues, several went blind! #mandateregulationsforpostopcare

How much would a therapist charge for just that section and or is it ok to do entire body? Or just that section for the tummy tuck?

Setting your fees depends on your experience and qualifications, and what your competitors charge.

I noticed in other videos the therapist wears gloves. Do we supposed to wear gloves only when the client has open incisions or the Drainage tube?
@petraerving1854
@petraerving1854 3 года назад
I don't wear gloves because in my opinion you simply cannot do the MLD effectively enough wearing them. There's a barrier between me and the patient's skin. I sanitise my hand before and after touching each patient. So, for me it's a choice and to give a better treatment experience for my patients.

@petraerving1854

Micropore tape. It's brilliant! Use it after surgical dressings are removed, for 12 weeks, changing approx. every 5 days. It supports the scar, keeps the skin edges together and limits the scar stretching.

Hi, I recommend surgical tape. You can get it in 2.5cm and 5cm widths. However, it's best to go with what your surgeon, doctor or wound care specialist advises.

How do you recommend the movement of fluid for a TT patient who still has drain collector tucked in, to help collect fluid within the first 14days post surgery?
@petraerving1854
@petraerving1854 10 месяцев назад
The fluid that is draining via drains is serous fluid. Its 'free' fluid that is not within the tissues. Whereas the fluid that is mobilised and moved during Manual Lymph Drainage is interstitial fluid - fluid within the tissues. So, if you are a qualified MLD therapist, you will work with the lymphatic system, supporting what it does naturally - encouraging fluid out of the tissues into the lymphatic system. You are NOT pushing fluid into the drains. I hope that helps?
