Jason is building what he hopes will be the ultimate vehicle for grid down travel. He chooses the reliable Honda XR650L as the platform to start this project. This motorcycle has minimal electronics, no fuel injection and is air cooled. Its relatively light weight and small size makes it extremely mobile in almost any terrain. It is very fuel efficient when recourses are at a premium. I wanted extended range and SHTF capabilities. I also wanted a dirt bike dual sport fpr thr prepared citizens. I needed a budget friendy bigout bike. This bike suits all of that criteria

A Honda XR is the best choice for the apocalypse. Simple, sturdy design and serviceable. But I rather would choose the Honda XR 150 over the XR 650. Less weight, less noise, and less gas consumption.

You are correct about XRs, best bikes for these types of situations. I have both a 600R and a 650R, both faster and lighter than the 650L. I want to add a few smaller units like the 100, 150, 200, 250 to the fleet.

I didn't know that they still made analog bikes. That's good to know. Im with you, Jason, simple carb and no electronics. Just buy extra tires, tubes and tune-up stuff, like spark plugs and carb kits. I personally because of disability would look at the 2 rider automatic quads, not the big side by sides. Then I could take my wife and with racks a good bit of gear including a rifle. Right now I treat my 4x4 truck as my emergency vehicle. I have invested in backup parts , and gallons of extra fluids, oil, trans, diff, antifreeze, etc. I think that's a great bike for emergency needs.👍☝️

Analog is the way to go. I run a XR650R, kick start, carburetor, no battery yet still has juice enough for lighting system and accessories, considerably less weight than the 650L in the video, wayyy more power and better performance than most dirt bikes out there.

🇦🇺😎👍In Australia nowadays the dealerships have mixed brands. The shop in our next major town sells Suzuki , KTM and Kawasaki. The shop 5 kms up the road sells Yamaha and Honda….Tiz weird compared to years gone by. Arch enemies under the same roof….I’ve got a 2 registered DR650 trail bikes . Ones a 2016 and the other is a 2019. The government has banned them now due to emissions laws 2021/22 were the last models to be released. Keep in mind everything eventually gets banned in Australia , even ham & cheese sandwiches at the school tuck shop. Unhealthy apparently 🙄… great video mate.

I guess I’m a little confused? Everything you discussed about the bike is true, mobility, affordability, reliability, ect, ect. But, what is the goal? We didn’t talk about the purpose. Watching the channel, I know Jason has a family. They can’t go if you have to bail for whatever reason. Are you going on a food run? You can’t haul anything back. As Jason stated, he will definitely wreck it. Are you now hurt? Is the bike hurt? Just some things that I was thinking about. Although the UTV is wider, maybe less “all round” capable and harder on fuel, all things considered would be a much more practical grid down, shtf type vehicle. You can carry more fuel if need be as well as the family. Got a nice little box back there for the haul. You could make little additions to the box to fit your needs, like they do with a humvee. My wife couldn’t ride the motorcycle, but she could drive the UTV if needed. Even with the price difference I’m leaning UTV…. Great video.

All good points and for me a great use is quick in-and-out, think high speed reconnaissance machine. A bike like that can be in and out of a situation before anyone has a chance to react. I've rolled up on people trespassing on my property before they had a chance to take their hands out of their pockets. With a good experienced rider, there is literally NO machine that can outrun you, or even catch you on back roads and trails. The stock exhaust is so quiet you wouldn't hear it until it came around the next corner unless it's a dead-quiet morning or evening. You can quickly and efficiently blast out the back roads to the next town 60 miles away to say hi to a friend, or deliver or collect something, and get back before the coffee's cold. You can develop a system of singletrack trails in your area that is hardly discernable from game trails, yet you can get to key locations in minutes undetected. It's a great accessory for a group of guys on quads or 4x4 trucks trying to get through an area, the guy on the bike can go in and out of every side-trail and off-shoot for the next 10km in the same amount of time it takes for the main group to move 1km. In grid-lock traffic you can simply ride the ditch or shoulders and get out. It's obviously not something to carry a bunch of gear, but you can mount racks and luggage systems to carry quite a bit of stuff. See any of the "around the world" motorcycle crowd, or any motorcycle in Central or South America. They carry more stuff on those bikes than most people fit in a side by side, not joking. They use them day to day the same way that we use trucks and cars because it's all they can afford. If you're into ultra-light and fuel isn't an issue than you can be self sustaining on a bike for days or even weeks with only what fits in a 30L backpack - light and fast. Most dual-sport type bikes can be fitted with huge aftermarket tanks that give you 300 or 400 miles if that's what you're into. Finally, the potential for injury is always there and that risk goes down exponentially with riding experience, training, optimizing your health, and especially being obsessed with dirt bikes and racing and training on them regularly. Personally I ride several times per week and all the serious injuries I've sustained over the past 10 years, even with racing included, were sustained at work, or while doing dumb shit around the house like moving heavy things in the garage. Mileage may vary ;)

Depending on where you live something that is as loud as this will be announcing your presence to a lot of people. Once gas runs out its also going to be a useless paper weight. Im not sure of the charging options but an electronic version with a heavyweight solar charger might be better. Or even a pedal bike depending on what you plan to do with it. Fun though!

Experience is important too, so ride ride ride while things are good, you will be ok when they aren't. Love the multi layered, redundant strategy. We had a couple 80s 90s vintage XT350s on the farm, and I remember them being pretty good bikes. I run a Honda XR650R nowadays, and I've had to use it for self rescuing the broken main vehicle more than once. Ride off to get parts and tools, come back fix it, load up, back to running. I'm curious about hardening the electronics on these, as even with carburetor bikes they have CDI ignition, which could be damaged by emp. Might be able to keep a spare brain box in a faraday box or something like that.

You can zip-tie spare levers behind your number plate/headlight and a small tool roll under the seat or in the airbox. If you're NOT into wrap-arounds - move your levers inboard toward the triples an inch or so (that is where they should be anyway for best leverage on the clutch lever with your index or middle finger), and put teflon tape under the mounts so they just rotate out of the way in a crash. Install a set of $20 aluminum ODI bar end plugs, or similar. Unless you spend all day riding on piles of rocks the size of beach balls, you'll be fine.

I agree. I thought a 700 king quad would be an excellent tool for pulling supplies in a small trailer deep into the bush. As a long time motorcyclist I was soon discovering that I was very limited on where this quad could take me. off cambers were sketchie as heck as were deep rutted out trails. In winter i would be subject to the elements and as well depth of snow. A Bombardier Bombi cam go almost anywhere and provide shelter. I could sleep in the cab and stay warm as i travelled deeper into the bush if inhad a Bombi! A used Bombi was $25,000.00 and the quad was $14,500.00 am contemplating selling it as the Bombi is the ultimate bugout vehicle regardless of the season or weather

While those bikes are a great choice. I believe something like a late 90s dirt model Suzuki DR350 is a better choice. Reason being is that it's lighter, lower seat height, has plenty of power to take you virtually anywhere and don't even require a battery to run. Kick start only, no electric start and super easy to work on. Easy to add a street legal kit if you need to but for an apocobike there would be no need. Also pre drill the levers so that if you drop it the end will break but leave you with a short lever. Flag style handguards won't protect your levers or hand on a hard hit. Full wrap handguards offer more protection but have other risks. A smaller bike than the 650 may not have as much power but also would be lighter and easier to stand back up on a tip over especially if you get injured most modern dual sports are running at or over 300 lbs. An old xr200, is also a solid bike. I suppose it depends on your definition of an apocalypse... Use all the saved cash to set it up and for riding gear.

But for me it's got plenty of power and real light if I have to pick it up. Thanks for your videos and your great character and descent language I really do preciate it! I don't know where I can get accesses where I can mount things on handle bars and be able to strap things down while I'm riding. Would you happen to know where I can?

Great bikes but suspension is seriously underwhelming when off-road.

An Electric start. If you are bury it in mud you will be wishing you had one. My old Honda dirt bike had one. I hurt once and it comes in handy when you can't Kick

Electric start is definitely preferred. I would like to have a kickstart backup though.
