Thats right, the pre gain is important because if the gain coming in is too low, then you'll have to compensate by having to drag the threshold value really low and wont have that much room to work with. If the pre gain is at a healthy level, it makes dialing in the values much smoother, resulting it a better sound.

@@jonaudio hm, I’ve also heard the term ‘make-up gain’ with compressors, the idea that you cut into a sound with a compressor which reduces the volume, then have to bring volume back up to original level. Does that apply with Maximus? It seems different from a compressor like fruity limiter

The post gain knobs are the makeup gain for maximus, and you have 4 post knobs for all the bands. Compression with reduce the dynamic range, so the post gain/make up is there to restore the lost volume.

Thanks man!! That's a really interesting concept. I haven't used OTT too much (maybe I'll re-install it at some point), but based on compression and saturation alone, I'm sure there can be a preset made in maximus that is pretty close to it.

Great question! So, in that situation it's 100% up to you. If you like the balance of the overall mix and want to keep it as it is, then I would personally reach for the graph and move the center node down to the left, following the diagonal line, in other words, bringing the threshold down so compression can start happening. If you feel the specific band you're working on can use a tonality boost, then you can increase the pre knob to taste and also adjust the graph (threshold in this case) to suit your signal the way you want to.
