Commodus (Joaquin Phoenix) challenges Maximus (Russell Crowe) in combat in the hopes of killing him himself, but Maximus is simply too proficient in battle and ends up killing Commodus.
Gladiator (2000) Commodus takes over power and demotes Maximus, one of the preferred generals of his father, Emperor Marcus Aurelius. As a result, Maximus is relegated to fighting till death as a gladiator.

It's not so much the acting, more the deeds the authors and director imagine a villain to commit. Murdering the family of the protagonist or raping his love interest, for example is a common plot device to make the villain extremely dispisable and thus the hero even more tragic and loveable.

A great detail I noticed - at the start of the fight, Maximus obviously has his left arm pinned to his side where he got stabbed and it really limits his movement. He purchased a 200 cd changer surround system and huge screen tv with wooden frame that probably weighed about 400 pounds and we would play this movie in the living room and hear the crowd roar on the speakers as the gladiators fought and it was the best! He went from flailing at Maximus in desperation and denial to clinging to him in disbelief, as he realized Maximus was the last human he’d be connected with in any way, ever again. As a kid we nicknamed Commodus “the puke” because of his behavior but as an adult we see he’s actually a victim of pride who never “measured up” and it turned him into something pitiful - only validating his insecurities. The knife in his throat by his “own hand” is a symbol of how he killed himself trying to prove it all wrong. You can see in his eyes by the time he realized how far it had all gone, the knife was already in his throat and he knew it was too late. This movie is a work of art.

That door was Death's Door. I'm cannot really remember the full belief, but dying was as easy as stepping through a door. Maximus Orrileas's wife and child were waiting just beyond that door. Maximus's was at the point of death, and was fighting even at that point for the justice he deserved after the Emporer had his wife and child killed. Maximus was everything the Emporer was not. Loved by his wife and child, his men would follow him to death's door and beyond, skilled in both war and politics, and a servant of the people. Hell, even the Emporer's sister and nephew loved Maximus over the Emporer. Hence the fight, hence the cheating and hence the stabbing to even the field.

Moreover, when Phoenix as Commodus could use almost the entire palette of his acting techniques, Crowe had the task of conveying all the emotions and inner world of the hero with much less external manifestations. Part of the beauty of this movie, and others that have similarly great fight scenes, is the amount of blocks. There’s a few older Asian movies that did this very well where there were 200+ blocks and only about 3 landed blows. It creates tension and anticipation by searching for the next landed blow, and gives a sense of actual danger for the protagonist. Being able to mow down enemy after enemy is only entertaining for so long.

Maximum in-lore likely used it in combination with his rage to at least ignore the pain, even the slash wound he received. 2. Commodus was likely never injured before. Ever. Being slashed like that must have felt traumatizing, made him feel mortal for the first time. 3. Similar to #2, Commodus likely never "lost" a fight before. That means no one ever tried to fight him seriously, ever. This prevented him from learning basic CQC and wee the difference the moment they decide to throw hands.

@@francargeric1 Thats the point. Commodus never faced a seasoned warrior eager to kill him. Thought he could duel the most trusted General who fought his way up from the lowest point to utmost prrstige as a lowborn foreigner who is not of Rome. His version of war and fighting is philosophical and theatrical like people now a days who romantasize thoose matters. While all who have been to war pray no other ever has to again.

Well at that point being commander of a legion depended on you being from the right (meaning leading rich) families. Less on being a competent soldier. The era of soldier generals and emperors was still to come and for a reason known as the crisis of the 3rd century.
