Its a perfect example of market forces setting a price. Cough syrup became like a status symbol, the same way designer clothes are incredibly expensive for just basic t shirts. Youre not paying for the item itself, youre paying for the exclusivity of it, you see? If you want an opiate high you could literally buy a couple of oxys or $10 worth of fentanyl or heroin. But for the people that buy lean its not even about the high, its about showing off that you can afford activis. Same thing goes for alcohol. You can buy a bottle of champagne for 4.99 with the same alcohol same taste, but people will go to the club and buy Cristal for hundreds of dollars because its a luxury item, its a flex.

I get you're probably joking but codeine cough syrup was commonly used by heroin addicts to help with withdrawal since the 1930s or so. It may be a more recent fixture in hip-hop culture but it has been a fixture of both black and drug culture for many decades.
