I never understood the point of these pedals personally. I mean, are they for people that don't have good amps or what? I didn't always have good amps when I was younger, but I never really found these pedals helped much even on those.
@RustyNotesTV
@RustyNotesTV 10 лет назад
treble boost, help defines attack. can also add a more controlled gain/distortion to it.
@crazybadcuber
@crazybadcuber 10 лет назад
RustyNotesTV hmmm, I've never had any problems with treble or controlling my gain. Are you talking about leads then? I mean once you dial in a really good rhythm tone, there's really no reason to leave it. Lead on the other hand needs a boost, but that's what I have multi channel amps for. I dunno. I know a lot of people like these types of pedals, but I've personally always never got the point of them I guess. The right amp doesn't need pedals.
@OlaEnglund
@OlaEnglund 10 лет назад
A lot of amplifiers are not made for modern metal, you have to remember that a Dual Rectifier and Peavey 5150 were designed in the 90s. To make them tighter and more defined sounding for modern metal, people boost them with an overdrive.
@crazybadcuber
@crazybadcuber 10 лет назад
Ola Englund Ok. I'd rather still just sell my amps and get new modern ones if that's the tone I was going for.
@AscentToZenith
@AscentToZenith 10 лет назад
CrazyBadCuber lol.. Your outlook is very odd. Pedals help define your tone as a metal player. You start off with an amp that has the similar tone to you like a 5150 or whatever and use the pedal so you can have. I am not the biggest gear tech or anything but I don't know of many amps that you actually don't need a boost pedal with. A 5150 with an TS might sound better than these "modern metal" amps. Just all opinions and such. Whatever you like the sound of is what you should buy.

I've had an original ibanez TS-9, an EHX east river drive, and tried the Vox Ice 9 and CAE booster, and I just bought the Maxon OD 808. I can tell you that the MAxon sounds the best. Creamy, lots of sustain, excellent to boost amp (which is primarily what I do with my Peavey 5150) or into the clean channel to add a bit of thick grit for lighter rock tones. Overall a huge improvement. I purchased the ERD as a cheaper alternative and I found that into another amp it would probably be amazing for the price, and sounds exactly like a TS808, but into the peavey it was a little too bright. Seriously get the MAXON.
@rbailey1010
@rbailey1010 10 лет назад
It's still hard to be the original 808 or OD9. Most transparent and smoothest in my opinion. The other pedals are still great but add an unnecessary "grit" that adds extra noise when cranking an amp. I say dial in the gain you want on the amp and let the overdrive boost and tighten everything up without altering the tone. To each his own!

The biggest mistake done in this demo was not setting the Levels on each pedals beforehand. Else, it could've been much easier to notice the boost.

To me it's not about which I'd pedal is best. But which one fits your amp's voice the best. For example my modded ts-808 sounds best with my Mesa Boogie Mark IV and Roadster but my Marshall 30th anniversary model sounds best with a modded TS-9 or an MXR distortion III.

I use the od9 pro to push my peavey xxx over the edge. It rounds the mid curve nicely. I tried the od808 too. You really need to be in front of your speakers to notice a big difference. oh and don't forget to put a huge noise gate after it.... there will be feedback.
@neonether

Damn, have had the 808X for ages and always sounds killer, esp on diezel and most duller sounding amps. The mid enhance on that ST9 Pro+ sounds sooo sweet though, just picked up the Fortin 33 but it might be well in order to grab that ST9 as well. Community college for the kiddos!

Great demo Ola! Got myself the ST9Pro+ after watching the video with Rob Barret of Cannibal Corpse..way too brutal for me! Although I still do like the significance of it but I lose a bit of clarity I feel...even with the gain rolled back on the amp! will be going back to the never failing and always needed OD 808!!

You must be listening through crappy speakers? The pedals tighten up the bass and add more mids. Its not about adding more distortion. In the last section the gain on them is all the way off. They are used to boost and condition the signal. The boost drives the first gainstage of the amp- which would be running clean otherwise. This type of pedal is used to put "the icing on the cake" in this application.
@owensixteen3443
@owensixteen3443 5 лет назад
biggest reason for this famous od808 is for clean boost the signal in the front of the chain. it also shapes the tone of the distortion from the amp but yes its ever so slight. tightens lows and boosts mids.

The 808 is my fav OD of all time. When I was looking online for an alternative to the TS9 I found Jon Donais of Anthrax and Shadows fall used the 808 with his Rivera for a crushing tone. I bought one and never looked back. I used it to boost tube amps as well as solid state and modeling amps with killer results! Never occurred to me b4 but I boosted my Micro Cube with the Maxon 808 and it was g re at... Never tried the other models shown here but what I'm hearing sounds good!
@TL-angzarr

Funny that you landed on the OD808 as a TS9 alternative as the OD808 is the closest to the original TS9 circuit. The OD9 is actually closer to a TS808 than the OD808.

The OD808X and the ST9Pro+ are really a step above imo. The other 3 are basically some kind of Ibanez TS9, but those two have something more, the 808X is more agressive and chuggy, and the ST9Pro+ is more rich, more crunchy and versatile imo, they really add something
@kikomarty4337
@kikomarty4337 7 лет назад
I have both man, the ST-9 pro plus is more aggressive to me, due to the mid eq. I don't like the 808x too much. I like the original better than the 808x and the ST-9 pro plus the best.

I have the original od808 as well... it’s the staple of the pedal board, BUT one must also look at overdrives not as a distortion... it’s a boost of course, but to me it’s more like a flavor, it tastes amazing and made me want to sample others, now I have DO have others I use depending on the day, that being said... the ST9 to me, is looking LOVELY😍

Why would you use such a high "tone" settings? It makes everything sound nasally. Also what are your reccomended settings on the OD808?
@owensixteen3443

the high tone setting gives boosts to attack portion of frequency wave. sort of gives a more defined pick attack sound i think.

i have the good ole, od808, i use it with my blackstar ht metal series... only a 5 watt but i don't exactly have the cash for a big ass high watt monster head and such... oh btw, what do you guys think would be a good setting on the od808? i usually use it with the balance close to all the way up, the drive close to maybe 9 o'clock ish or less, and i like to add a little mids with the tone and put the tone to 2 ish o'clock. usually have the gain on the amp 12 or 1 o'clock ish. any recommendations?

I play a peavey xxx and sometimes a peavey double xx. but I play with all pedals running in the front just with the clean channel. I don't use the loops. I play with a hardwire metal distortion pedal. and I have a mxr super badass distortion pedal. I'm wondering would the st9 be good before my hardwire? I love the the hardwire metal pedal sound. I'm wondering if it will change anything. I don't use the distortion on my head. the hardwire gave me what I wanted. I bought a boss 7band equalizer for mid boost for solos. I was either going to get a second equalizer for a more low end for certain heavier songs. or would it be better if I place st9 in front of the hardwire instead? I noticed it was mentioned the st9 was placed in front of the head distortion.

CrazyBadCuber I Had a Dual recto and as Ola says, if on a Dual you increase the gain after 2 o'clock the sound become muddy and less focus with less attack. Now I have a Rockerverb and the concept is the same. I have teh gain know on 1 o'clock and boost the head with a TS808. The results is a higher gain and a more defined sound.

I think it's easy to overlook the usefulness of this type of pedal. I personally don't see much point since I already love the sound of my Mesa rectifier. However I'm taking a look at them now because I'm hoping to shape my tone just a touch for recording purpose. I tried to shape the gain section with EQs in the box, it's sorta works but I'm hoping to get it perfectly right at the source without relying in EQs. I'm much concerned about the noise level they insert into my signal.

Great shootout, as always. I tried personally all these and also the VOP-9 Vintage Overdrive Pro and the TBO-9 or TOD-9 (can't remember exactly which one. All I know is that it had a tube and was very dark sounding). My favorite by far, is the VOP-9. Very organic amp like sound. Of course I bought one right away! :P Having experimented with all of them, in the video the differences in sound is not as noticeable as actually trying them in person. They are all great pedals but, you have to try them all before you buy.
