Want to check out "what's underneath"? Then come with me for a below the water line inspection of this 2000 Maxum 2800 SCR Express Cruiser. She was very recently hauled out for bottom and outdrive inspection for pre-purchase and this video gives us a quick tour showing the hull and drive. While out of the water, the surveyor (Pacific Marine Surveyors, 714 -746-7380) does a "percussion" test, sounding the hull listening for signs of delamination in the hull. (Sounds fancy, but they are just hitting the hull with a hammer)! They check the spin of the props (bearing & alignment test) and check the "cupping" and angle of the blades. They also look for signs of galvanic action on the metals and use their experience to "look" at the overall condition. In this case, the bottom paint is in acceptable condition; however the drive needs better cleaning along with a new set of sacrificial zincs to preserve the drive. (We’ve had a lot of rain lately so the divers are limited in their ability to work). For those purchasing a vessel you should have recent haul out. While not the sexiest part of a boat purchase, it's a step that can help insure years of a good boating experience and gives you the opportunity to learn about your vessel.
