This whole trilogy has been really dope I love that all three are drastically different from one another but tackle similar themes is what the point of the franchise is I guess people miss that going into Maxine
I agree with you for the most part. But Maxxxine is my favorite of the 3. Except I agree that ending was a little too much. But I love the Giallo feel and Kevin Bacon is awesome as he usually is.
@Rickmicheals I've seen alot of people say it was their favorite as well, the beauty about it is we got three solid to amazing movies out of this Trilogy and Ti West & Mia Goth deserve our respect
My favourite of the three too. I actually loved the ***spoilers*** ending. The sudden inclusion of a cult, replete with an OTT ritua,l had me almost giggling with delight at the absurd ballsiness of it. I just wish they'd have leaned into it all the way and ended on a total grand guignol bloodbath, with Maxine victorious, but covered in blood and gore from head to toe (you might as well, if you're going to go this far). Nonetheless, a fantastic film!
Watched MaXXXine last night and it’s crazy how much disdain has came out of this film whereas in the writing, directing, music and acting there’s so much love for the craft. Mia Goth is a beast, and almost everyone is at the top of their acting game. I understand folks who have issue with some of the decisions but the overhate is where I am wondering if it’s all staged just because the first two films performed pretty well.
@@NorthernHandle couldn't have said it better myself, I feel like it has more to do with people rebeling against the hype around the film than the film itself
I love when film critics actually critique the film and dissect the elements of the film instead of tearing the whole film apart because it does not live up to their expectations. Great review bud.
Just finished Maxxine. Loved it. The ending was playing to the Satanic Panic of the 80's. So it worked for me. I also liked that she became a star and her dreams came true. She was like I just never want it to end... That was dope.
@SeekingGodsWill I enjoyed the outro portion of the story seeing her at the height of her success, still not 100% on the religious cult thing but like I said it could grow on me over time
Great film, as are the previous two in this outstanding trilogy. Each installment has its own voice and tone, and neither film falls back on retreading the same formula from the previous film (that kind of retread works fine for me in some franchises/series/etc, but I’m very glad it wasn’t done in this trilogy). I did see the reveal in the final act coming, as it was one of three hypotheses I’d formed early on and the one I was leaning toward the most (as the other two would’ve been more random and/or coincidental), but I was okay with that, as it didn’t take away from the built tension throughout the film. I did feel like that particular reveal needed a little more room to breathe before we moved on to the end of the finale, but I still really liked how it wrapped up, and I also really enjoyed the epilogue of the film. I felt like it all led to this trilogy coming full circle and having a proper resolution that was in line with the themes and developments throughout all three films, ending on a strong note, as well as a thematically and tonally appropriate one. I also get the feeling this film will have high rewatch value for me.
One of the best horror trilogies and any ranking I can understand because all three of these films are not only very good but also so different from each other so different strokes for different folks. Here’s my ranking of the trilogy: 1. Pearl 2. MaXXXine 3. X
This movie, as well as X and Pearl, are films that I appreciate more than I enjoy. They are brilliantly made, but not narratively interesting or appealing. Hard to see myself revisiting them ever again. But glad you had fun with them 👍
I loved it. Of course it’s not perfect, I wish Halsey and Lily’s characters had a bit more screen time but overall I loved it and Maxxxine’s self confidence is amazing
My expectations were a tad out of control, I think. I suppose I was hoping for something abit more original and interesting, maybe even a single surprise anywhere that would've stirred me emotionally. Fun kills, some strong ideas, Kevin Bacon's character, some amusing camp and giallo components aside, it felt like it was covering well tread ground and never fully came alive to me. We'll see what viewing session two will bring!
I literally just saw Maxxxine. And I really enjoyed it. For me it's right on par with X. However I knew who the was killer a mile away.( Who wouldn't) Otherwise I enjoyed it. And I felt the conclusion was appropriate.
I feel like everyone is obsessed with comparing it to what inspirations were behind the film (a common trend in this trilogy) that they forget to notice all of the tie ins to the previous films. There were SO many in Maxxxine that it was fun an Easter egg hunt throughout the film.
I thought they did a good job with the trailers by making them misleading and not revealing too much that's how in my opinon trailers should be and bravo for them. I enjoy the film even though I did feel like the third act was a bit anticlimatic for me as well but at the same time I feel like it covers up the all trilogy really well
I don't understand what people expected from this and how it failed to meet them. There is a good chunk of 80s slasher (especially Giallo) in this in my opinion. It also had a lot more than that too. The 3rd act was a bit rushed and the reveal was obvious but other than that it was totally awesome. The trailer didn't even look super slasher too me. I think the trailer explained the film well.
I’m not someone who puts my subjective opinions through an objective lens. But cmon- MaXXXine was great. I have some nitpicks but it was a well done homage to Giallo, noir, horror and mystery. 1. X 9.2/10 2. MaXXXine 8.8/10 3. Pearl 8.5/10
I loved ‘X’. It was great and caught me off guard. I need to catch Pearl and now, Maxxxine. It looks very good and I’m looking forward to catch up with both. Thanks for the review
Ti West has the 80's aesthetic mastered. Tarantino also uses nostalgia but in a different way. Let me just say he's no Tarantino. He's more like John Carpenter.
@jbwuzhere6819 As much as I think Carpenter is in a class all his own i definitely see the comparison, especially when you consider Carpenter had a tendency to do more unconventional movies as well
I have only seen X, which was very much a rehashed trope of a movie. It was okay, but not worth the hype. Haven't seen Pearl yet, but it's finally on a streaming service I have, so I will soon. I was pretty hyped for Maxxxine though. Trailer looked good. I think Maxxxine is what people claim X was. An actual period piece that really shows how TI West can capture the vibe and feel of the 80s, that is an homage rather than a retread. Mia Goth was great. She's both antagonistic but still vulnerable? Agree about the ending. While I thought it was fitting given the 80s and Satanic Panic of conservatives, it felt odd and I literally said "Okay" out loud. Haha I wonder if he will try to make another one, not sure where the story would go though.
I thought the film fell apart in the 3rd act, and it’s easily the weakest of the trilogy. But I still LOVE Mia Goth! With her unique and unconventional beauty and acting ability.
Mia Goth is a really good actress if not one of the best, she is up there with Sharon Stone and I was bit dissapointed when she didn't win a oscar for her performance of Pearl
I never saw Pearl or X before I saw Maxxxine. I thought it was ok. Then I watched the other 2 and now I’m thinking Maxxxine was a major let down. The other 2 are way better. And Mia Goth is a fucking legend.
Great review Joe as always 🙌🏻 i went to grace’s channel to see if she made a review and the very thing she said was she has not seen the first 2 films 😂😂😂🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
I was expecting a great really cool horror flick about porn stars done ti west style. Nah. It was ok. My daughter loved it and we discussed: i think maxxine is female favored, and x favors male tastes more. I thought Giancarlo and bacon were terribly miscast and clearly over playing their characters. Though this world is a little campy ( pearl moreso than x) i think both those roles could have been cast better with other actors. Who the killer is and the end was a bust. If you told me it was tacked on AFTER the movie was done id buy it.
Could you please discuss Pearl for a moment? I watched X and loved it. Then i heard it was part of a trilogy, so I watched Pearl. I didn't like Pearl. What am I missing? Very excited for Maxxxine, as I love the 80's.
Many are saying it's the weakest of the three because, well frankly, it is. But that doesn't mean it is bad or that people are hating it. It's just not the best out of three really good films. It's gotten a very fair shake on RT. Critic score is high 70's and audience score is currently in the low 80's which I would say is very fair.
Watched MaXXXine last night and it’s easy how much disdain has came out of this film whereas in the writing, directing, music and acting there’s so much love for the craft. Mia Goth is a beast, and almost everyone is at the top of their acting game. I understand folks who have issue with some of the decisions but the overhate is where I am wondering if it’s all staged.
Forced hate is the perfect way to put it .. doesn’t make any sense almost like people want to hate it for some reason .. people are weird bro just enjoy the gem that Mia Goth and Ti west are ..
@jessegonzales9038 I think sometimes people just like to rebel against the hype, I saw a whole thread of people talking about how over rated Ti West, Mia Goth, & the Trilogy is. If someone doesn't like them that's one thing but I can't help but feel like some people are going out of their way to hate on these movies simply because they are a bit unconventional & popular.
Why the disdain? I enjoyed the hell out of Maxxxine! Not the best film I’ve seen this year, but certainly the most entertaining. My second favourite of the trilogy, possibly even my favourite come a second viewing.
I actually loved it.. the 1st 2 acts were great.. the 3rd didn’t work entirely for me but by that time.. I was so into it, it didn’t bother me at all. My least favorite of the trilogy but I still love all 3
The movie was okay. it looked amazing. especially the 80s time period. but... it wasn't a horror movie and the ending it kind of fell apart. I hope he makes Pearl 2.
@eyeriiis that's a fair assessment, I agree about the ending being a little off... and as far as it not being a traditional horror movie I agree 100%, but that's also what I liked about it
I've been a fan of Ti West for years ever since I saw The House of the Devil, which is a modern horror classic, in my opinon. He gets a lot of weird flak. So does Mia Goth, I've noticed. Film bros saying she's a one-trick pony or something. I'd encourage anyone who thinks that to watch the new version of Emma starring Anya Taylor-Joy. She plays an entirely different kind of character, and she's clearly talented.
@AmyShermanDesign Yeah people call me a film bro but I think she's amazing lol Anya & Mia are my two favorite up and coming actresses right now. They rock every role they are in.
@@REELSHIFT haha, I definitely would not call you a film bro! I think that term carries a negative connotation, and in my opionion, you're one of the most objective YT film critics out there right now. Totally agree about Anya and Mia Goth. It's gross watching some people try to tear them down.
There's a really great analysis video on the movie X by the youtube channel 'Your Cult Boyfriend' I'd recommend anyone reading this comment to watch the video.
@@REELSHIFT oh I completely forgot she played multiple roles on X. I got the tickets for tomorrow. Didn’t even know this was out. Barely any marketing.
@@mindlander Lol, Halloween 1978, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 1974, Jeepers Creepers, The Strangers 2008, those are real horror 😂👍. Terrifier is a complete joke actually 😂
@ReaperKid-od7rw I'd say if you are at all interested that you should watch it and form your own opinion.. But yes this is not a traditional horror movie, but thats what I like about it and the rest of the Trilogy
I probably won't be watching Maxxxine, I'm not at that stage in my life, even though I love B cinema, nor do I think I'll finish X anytime soon, even though I liked it, and I doubt I'll finish this review, even though it's great
Movies that I have seen this year thus far that I thought were either good or okay 👍. 1. Wonka (Good) 2. Godzilla: Minius One (Good) 3. Oppenheimer (Good) 4. Aquaman 2 (Okay) 5. Beverly Hills Cop 4 (Good) 6. Madame Web (Okay) 7. Godzilla X Kong: The New Empire 8. The Marvels (Okay)
The fact that a trilogy was made in the time frame that it was = wow! Sometimes we have to wait WAY too long for even a sequel (I'm looking at you, The Batman!)🫣
