Yes the sound is terrifying I'll watch the video of the tornado that hit Mayfield in Western Kentucky higg and there was a siren going off in it along with the sound of the tornado and it was dark so each time the lightning struck it would illuminate that huge monstrous tornado it was the scariest most ominous thing I'd ever seen or heard I got chills and sweaty palms each time I'd watch it!! 😳😳

I was in the USA and took a direct hit from the 22 May 2011 monster that struck Joplin Missouri. I too stood and watched it coming towards me until it was nearly too late. I was mesmerized. You do not see things like this in Glasgow. Absolutely stunning video. 🍀 🌪️ 🍀

Hi Anthony. There is a mind-blowing video of the Fairfield, IL EF-4 tornado that was taken by an elderly gentleman as it approached his home. He kept on videorecording it until it hit his house, killed his wife & badly injured him. I would be interested in your opinion, because (unlike the heavily rain-wrapped Joplin EF-5 tornado) the violent destructive nature of the approaching Fairfield, IL EF-4 twister was quite easy to see, yet the elderly gentleman didn't make any effort to take shelter or help his wife (who had mobility & other health issues). It appeared to me that he was completely mesmerized & didn't totally comprehend what was about to happen to him, his wife, and their home.

@@derekbaker3279 I live in Illinois, not very far from the tornado's path. It was the first videos of a tornado I had seen. Anyway, the elderly gentleman went to the 2nd floor to get batteries for flashlights. He actually didn't think the tornado was going to hit them directly. He didn't abandon his wife intentionally. It is a sad story, but his video became an interest of weatherman and those studying them. The town name is Fairdale on Route 72. My dad was a big jokester, whenever we drove thru Fairdale he would say "don't blink or you will miss the town". He always said and did things in fun and not to hurt anyone. He was the kindness and sweetest man I knew, he was loved by so many people and of course I was very proud of him ❤. Back to the tornado, there are quite a few videos as it moved thru open fields. I was amazed at the size and rotation.

This tornado, 91 Andover KS, May 3rd 1999 and Tuscaloosa were unbelievably loud and angry sounding, even from several miles away. Some twisters like Joplin and Rochelle Illinois were eerily still and quiet until they were already too close for comfort(one of the many ways they snuck up on people along with Joplin forming rapidly out of nowhere and being rain wrapped). This and the other ones stated above made their presence known

@MAP1086 It's very strange. Regardless of their power, some are large, roaring monsters that you can hear from a very far distance, and some are eerily quiet and still until they are right about to hit you. It's strange.

@dannyllerenatv8635 4 года назад
@MAP1086 I remember watching survivors of the Joplin tornado, one elderly woman who's house was destroyed by it said that she didn't even hear a classic "freight train" sound, she just said that all of a sudden she felt a change in pressure and just like that her house just exploded and she didn't even hear the wind until the tornado hit, some videos of the Joplin tornado hitting were like that as well, no roar until it blew the place down while there are some videos here with a small little rope being filmed in someone's car that sounds like it is about to make the microphone explode. Not sure what explains this phenomenon.

You may have the best video on here of this BEAST! Without a storm shelter or basement, there's no way, I would chance surviving a tornado, like this, above ground. I'd be in my car, heading in the opposite direction. That roar! Terrifying!

They say not to do that. But I believe if faced with riding this monster out in a closet or trying to out run in a car I would take the car. Its amazing how people survived in their home without a safe room, basement or underground shelter. Least in my car I feel a better chance and even surviving a direct strike I feel would cause mental , paranoia type issues and I'd never sleep again afraid another might come while asleep. I imagine however it would be easier to sleep at a NASCAR race than through the decibels from this monster. I ve listened with headphones to tornadoes and as bad as the approaching roar sounds listening to this then it impacting a home with the owners huddled in the bathroom with cell phone camera or go pro still recording hearing shattering glass , the sound of the roof being torn off and the rest if the home being blown apart over the screams of the owners that you never get used too. I try to learn by listening but the terrifying heartwrenching people going thru it makes it hard to focus on tornado.

This was taken at close to sw 118th street just west of Western looking south. The high school he refers to in it is Westmoore High School which would be between him and where the tornado crosses Western at 149th street. Again, this thing is so huge and takes up so much sky that it is really hard to imagine that at this location it is over 2 miles away...hence the reason he thought it was going to go through Westmoore High School.

Nothing like hearing a young man using common sense and his dad......NOT! First of all, tornados are very unpredictable and can be on top of you before you know it. secondly, he’s not listening to the news who is saying, “you need to be underground for this tornado or out of its path, and do not try to ride this out above ground.” as he tells his son to get in the closest. I’m glad they’re safe but I’ve always wondered, out of all the people who died how many of them were doing exactly what this guy is doing. CRAZY.

It's easy to tell which direction a tornado is going. Just watch the base and focus on things nearby that are indirectly in front of you for whatever direction you are in. Count telephone poles for example. If you see them disappear into the funnel one after the other then you know it's coming towards you. It's the oncoming train scenario. It doesn't look like it's moving anywhere when you look at it as a whole, but focus on the tracks, the wheels of the train, and things the train passes... and you can tell its moving and how fast.

I’ve got shelters inside and out and all my neighbors do. But I always go get away from it. Now when I do it I always watch the radar and do my own forecast. SPCA’s chasing will get you no where. If you can’t be leaving your house before the hail core arrives then you might as well stay. I waited in Moore for it to arrive and I had to core punch because it was safer than trying to go east or south. There was hardly nobody going north. I hauled ass north and stayed in town. Ended up around Norman. Now one feeling I had was I wonder who I’ll meet during rescue. I’m a pedi trauma surgeon with a addiction to weather. But I went in the field and met all of these people I watched get destroyed. I did the same in Joplin. That’s why I knew it would happen on this one. I was expecting it on this one. Joplin I was very detached. And I treat patients from 0-21 normally. I’m board cert for adults also It’s just kids are much easier for me. Most people think kids are harder to deal with but that’s a myth. Kids as long as you replace any blood they lose they bounce back. Adults you can replace it 10x and hypovolemic shock is still a big issue. So yes I will take my kids And I’m a kid at heart. I can’t stand adults just so negative all the time and the kids when you walk in the room they force you to show up for them and be responsible. Adults make you wanna slip during surgery and cut something important. I’m joking of course, ok half joking!

It was not a direct hit, they got glanced by it. Also you do not want to be in a walk-in when the tornado hits. When the tornado ruptures the refrigeration lines you will be gassed to death and die of co2 poisoning even if you survive the tornado. Also storm shelters underground cost several thousand dollars to build and that amount yearly to maintain them and keep them sealed tightly so they do not flood. People don't have that kind of money on hand.

Man, That sound is mind bending!!! Sounds like 1000 jet engines at full power, along with 1000 Niagara falls all mixed together at volume 11. Never have understood the "sounds like a train" statement. I even heard one guy who was in a tornado once say, "I didn't hear any horns, bells or whistles. Not sure the guy had a brain though!!!

Impressive video of a truly creepy tornado. The weirdness that happens at 1:57 is just plain strange...it looks like the frame above and below the top of the fence splits and moves in opposite directions. At first, I thought it was distortion from a raindrop, but the whole thing splits. Is that like a depth of field dual lens effect? Did anybody even sell dual lens cameras then? I'm perplexed.

Yea that’s ridiculously weird. The light on the porch next door is in a totally different spot on the fence after that section moves. I would say this was edited somehow but idk. That’s just crazy.

@Ashley Dempsey Real men value their lives. Real men don't act like fools. Real men avail themselves of the instinct for self preservation. It is the strongest instinct with which God imbued us. Even an insect will try to protect its life. I'm not referencing acts of courage - which is something that both males and females are capable of doing. I'm referencing stupidity. There is no rational reason to put oneself in harm's way, just to get a video. THAT is NOT valor. It is folly. It is very judgmental of you to hope that Susan May does not have sons. She believes that parents should be circumspect, and should protect their children. That is their job, and anything less would be dereliction. I realize that tornadoes are mesmerizing. I'm from "tornado alley", and I can comprehend why he was captivated; but it can cause some people to be oblivious to imminent disaster. He should have stopped documenting this event, after about 3 or 4 minutes. He had plenty of good footage, without endangering his life. I hope that he is now aware of this, when thinking about it, in retrospect. His son was concerned not only for his own life. It is obvious that his son was also fearful for the life of his father - as he should be. Having said this, there is no denying that this video is excellent.
@MALP1231
@MALP1231 4 года назад
@Ashley Dempsey You are missing the point, Ashley. This has nothing to do with valor. It is not courageous, nor unselfish, to foolishly put your own life in risk, in order to get a damn video! To leave a woman as a widow, and children as fatherless - for a video - has nothing to do with being a man. To risk ones safety and life for a valid reason is a good thing. To risk it for folly is a foolish thing. He had plenty of time to document this event, without endangering his life. He lingered too long. And his son (I'm assuming) was frightened for his father. That is not being a sissy. That is utilizing common sense. He had a rational reason to feel trepidation. Rational fear is what precludes people from doing foolish and precarious things. All children need to be taught rational fear. Taking a video has nothing whatsoever to do with saving somebody from harm or death. I do agree with your comments about the "drag queen" issue. You are correct about that. My commentary is not an attack on males. I am in favor of acts of courage, for both males and females. But, I am not a proponent of risking safety/life without a valid reason.

When dealing with an EF5 tornado: you either must get underground or out of its way entirely. An EF5 will level everything in the path of it. Closet won't stand a chance against an EF5 wedge.

It's funny you don't hear the sirens until the last of video. But you would think they would been going off way before that
@derekbaker3279
@derekbaker3279 3 года назад
They were, but one of the big disadvantages of tornado sirens is that they overheat very quickly, so they have to be shut off after several minutes. This actually confused some people in Joplin, Missouri on May 22, 2011...they thought that they danger was over & did not try to take shelter until the heavily rain-wrapped monster was almost on top of them. As James Spann (noted meteorologist & tornado safety expert) has said many times...tornado sirens are 1950s technology & should not be anyone's main source for warnings.

No, it was getting wrapped in rain and debris from all the stuff it granulated/shredded in West Moore. It was actually moving away from him by the time he said that; it had already passed well to the east-southeast of him and was moving generally east-northeast, probably around the Moore Medical Center or the Tom Strouhal Little River Park area.

fist off im so glad you guys are alright atleast i hope all are alright but i agree with all the comments thats saying how good this video is and this definitely the first video i have came across that you can actually hear the roar of the tornado and how deathly eerie it sounds if it wasnt from youtube id never see tornadoes like this unless i go and watch Twister which is one of my favorite movies ill admit when i was you and seen that movie i wanted to be a storm chaser but i live down in georgia and only a certian area in ga is known as dixie alley but im not in that area if we get one its usually just a ef1 and usually out in the country but last yr i will say that it suprised us all because for the first time ever in history that i know of one did touch down maybe a mile from me and on that night i was omw to mcdonalds to get my family supper and at one point i was maybe a block away from it if i would of had to take a right to go to where i was going i woulda drove right into it but thankfully my route wasnt heading to the tornado that touched down and destroyed a churchs roof and signs and trees and relocated peoples headstones in the graveyard on the churches property and that church was in session and there was absolutely no injuries or deaths even if it was a ef1 they could of gotten hurt badly but nooone did

Actually, what you stated (and what some TV meteorologists have stated), is not necessarily correct. FYI, the vast majority of homes impacted by the Newcastle-Moore EF-5 tornado did not experience EF-5 level damage. If you check out the damage survey report (on the NWS website), there wasn't EF-5 level damage along the entire track through town & even when there was, it was restricted to a narrow area in the centre. In fact, the majority of the area in the damage path received EF-3 or lower damage. The same thing applies to the damage path of the 2011 Joplin, Missouri EF-5 tornado. Also, over the years, many people have sheltered & survived EF-3 & 4 level damage in a central room on the ground floor of a well-built home. So....while definitely not an optimal situation (!) & serious injuries are possible ....the truth is that being in the path of a violent tornado is not an automatic death sentence, as long as you are taking shelter in a properly constructed home that has been built to code & kept in good condition. (Note: One of the reasons for the terrible number of casualties in the Joplin EF-5 tornado was that many of the structures were old, in rough condition, not built with the best materials, and/or not built to code) In contrast, being caught in a car where there is EF-2 level damage or worse is frequently a deadly mistake, so there is an legit argument to be made that the dangers of driving away from the expected path of a tornado may be greater than the danger of hunkering down & riding out the storm in a well-built home. On the other hand, if someone lives in a trailer home, 'manufactured home' or mobile home (i.e., even a weak tornado or damaging straight-line winds from a severe thunderstorm could be deadly), then residents absolutely must get in their car & drive out of the expected path of the tornado/severe weather. Of course, all of this becomes moot if a person has access to a properly constructed storm shelter that is designed to withstand the force of debris striking it during a violent tornado. In that case, by far the safest option is to stay put & take cover in the storm shelter. Just some food for thought....
